[urgent] Db Merge

Hey there.. ok here is the story...

yesterday i had a db error so i restored 2 hours backup, but then i start getting complains that people are not seeing their stuff this and that...

so therefore i need merge another DB into my current DB....

and i neeed help with that....

first of all is it possible to do so

is there any possible errors i can get

if no, how do i merge them

Thanks allot

Why do you need to merge a database?

tafreeh 08-18-2009 06:54 AM

i lost some post and threads, which i have on my backup, so i just wanted to take those post and threads and put it in my current db....

so i thought merging both dbs would recover my lost posts... but i dun know how do i do that....

A better option is to use ImpEx to merge sets of data.

Marco van Herwaarden 08-18-2009 08:21 AM

You MUST use ImpEx, you can not just merge 2 databases. But be aware that ImpEx will also lead to some problems:
- URL's of the imported posts will change
- Forum definitions etc, are imported again

tafreeh 08-18-2009 09:43 PM

but i m just gonna run the module of post and threads...

not forums and no users and nothing else....

would still cause some problem?

theFM 08-18-2009 09:50 PM

a single word : - "NO"

Marco van Herwaarden 08-19-2009 09:28 AM

@theFM

And how do you come to such a conclusion?

@tafreeh

AFAIK it is not possible to run only posts/threads. You always first MUST import users/usergroups/forums. Otherwise ImpEx can not match posts to users or forums.

but why vb.com is saying, that impex will not help at all..?

Well i am getting really confused by your posts.

Let me recap:

- You had a database error on your site
- You decided to restore a 2 hour old backup. Result should be that your board is back to the situation of 2 hours ago, so you have basically lost 2 hours of postings/registrations.
- Your members complain about the posts made in these 2 hours that are lost. If i where the admin i would say though luck, repost.

But now it gets confusing. You have another backup (??) that still has these 2 hours worth of postings? And now want to merge all in this backup or only the posts of the lost 2 hours into your current database?

theFM 08-19-2009 10:12 AM

i thoght he just wants to recover his posts , so the posters who had posted in his forum was already there so it won't worry

and by the way are you using other databases of other sites and merging with one another

don't know it will be of any help to you

@Marco , sorry about that , appolize , i thought on the other way round

before i restored the 2 hours ago backup, and took another backup for existing forum, which i m gonna called" current backup"

now i need to merge "current backup" with "2 hours ago" backup... i need to recover post and thread and nothing else....

i dun know why it sounds soo confusing :)

yes, i just need to recover my post, and poster are already there...

NO that is the same database from same forum(same domain).

i just need to merge old database into new database for same forum.

I hope everything is clear now....

So should i go for Impex or dont bother....

snakes1100 08-20-2009 02:51 AM

Tell the users that the threads and posts are gone, its not worth the effort to recover them, that will be a lot of work.

Its NOT a simple task, if you never used impex before, then you simply dont understand how it works.

You CAN'T just run posts/threads.

Marco van Herwaarden 08-20-2009 11:04 AM

Like snakes1100 replied. Unless you have lost thousands of posts, trying to merge a few posts back into your current database is a timeconsuming and expert task and really not worth it for "just 2 hours of postings".

If there have been 1 or important posts missing, then it is best to manually find them in the backup, copy the text and repost.
