How do you fight against HUMAN spammers?

Anyone have any suggestions on how to reduce HUMAN SPAMMERS?

My board has been being hit daily by HUMAN spammers and they are using a IP proxy. So IP banning is useless. Any suggestions?

i'm facing same problem on my 2 forums.

mabersoft 08-08-2009 09:06 AM

Why don't you use the Proxy to IP, i now you said that. What you could do it make it so every member need to post in a certain forum befor you can post any where else. so you can delete the post easily? and the member?

It is extremely rare for humans to be spamming. How are you so sure that it is humans who are spamming ?

I have it setup that you need to post 3 times in the introduce yourself board then the rest of the forum you can post to.

I am sure they are HUMAN spammers because my members found out that another site's thread they were talking about our community. They post inappropriate pictures and direct their coments towards my Moderators. My moderators have tried to speaking to their Admin, but he thinks it is funny and not his problem. Strange enough, none of these HUMAN spammers seems to direct any comments towards me, just my Moderators.

I use the vbstopforumspam modification as it uses a vast database of known spammer ip addys and usernames, a human spammer gets banned and submitted on one forum, his info is automatically blocked on all forums using the mod. I have been using it for a long time now. there are only so many ip addy's a spammer can use. also restricting url's with a limited number of posts helps too.

Make a new user group for new members and chose to moderate each post via your admin cp prior to adding it on your forums. You will then be able to see who is a valid member and who is a spammer.

That way you can regulate new members, and check their first few post proir to moving them to the general member Usergroup, which will let member post automatically.

Do this and soon spammers especially humun ones will get fed up posting and joining for nothing ;)

You could just use the keyword spam hack and black list their key spam words for the said promotion they are trying to post.

That will automatically move their posts to the moderation queue, you can then spam ban the user accounts from that point.

Just moderate all new members. If they spam once, ban them. Works for me.

I'm just curious. Is it a case of forum war? (meaning members from one forum goes to another forum and troll/spam?) did something happen between your forum and the other forum?

as some members suggested, simply moderate the "new user" usergoup. You'll find out who's trolling. I had a similar issue when members from another forum tried to spam our site. I have never banned so many people at once..haha :D But in my case, the other forum admin was VERY helpful. He helped me get rid of trouble makers.

This mod says it is for 3.6 - will it still work for 3.8x?

gamerfu 08-10-2009 02:12 PM

We are not in a forum war, nor are any of our Members/Moderators. It is another forum that keeps bothering us, and the other forums site admin think it is all in good fun. It isn't his problem because we are not over their messing up his boards.

I told our Moderators, we are not going to particpate in such non-productive activites. I have a life and so does everyone else. So let us not waste our time by fighting back, especially if one of our Super Mods went to talk to their Root Admin personally and got told he didn't give a flip what his members do outside his boards.
