How to get people on my site
 

I started a new website and there is very to no activity. How do you guys get new members that are active and posting besides the usual tell your friends, family, etc.

Like an endeavor of industry, you need to advertise and spend time building your community.

Ok thanks, what else are good tips?

I think Wayne has explained the major methods, others would be adwords and adsense, get in all the major search engines, banner exchanges, Link directories and other forms of advertising such as joining related sites and trying to promote there without actually spamming, May be a good idea to read the sites T&C to see if you can add your site in a signature, Not all sites allow this, but some do ;)

Well for anyone who does make a thread like this - my best suggestion is to search and google the question you just asked, and then reformat your question and search and google again. The question has been asked time and time again, and you'll find more than enough answers.

There's no 1-2-3 solution for the perfect or most largest forum. If there was, I'd be broke and bigboards would include every forum owner. Advertising, content, a few promotional programs and great incentives would be a decent solution in brief.

And never expect anything overnight. A good percentage of forum owners I think give up after the first 3 months.

Try using youtube videos which can help.

problem is people bang up sites and expect everyone to come a flocking to their board.
Even if you have tons of friends - if your board does not have content that is relevant to them,then no one will come back again.
You need to find a niche and work on that.

you need to invest a lot of your time and...

1) create fresh content on a daily basis
2) create user friendly layout
3) market the site

(listed in priority)

Paying people usually works too. Lots I would do for the right dosh.
