Dreamweaver?
Hello
Just wondering what your thoughts were about Dreamweaver? Is it worth the money? How much tech knowledge do you need? Thanks for any info. Gabby |
I don't know any good developers that use it, most consider it a tool for amateurs or designers.
You'd be far better off learning to do things properly IMO. |
If you Know code ( html , xml , php ect ect ) and know what your looking at then use dreamweaver its the best..... but if you don't know how to right code or understand it then i would suggest getting some type of WYSIWYG program
hope this help ! good luck! |
Currently using UltraEdit myself (v14, when it was still a lightweight program to use).
Dreamweaver looks interesting, especially its autocomplete features, but it's quite recourse heavy. If it'd be worth its money is all depending on why you'd like to use it I guess. |
I use it because it has FTP built in. I quite like the code hinting too.

Dreamweaver's strength is that it has been adopted by a lot of large design shops. I am talking about companies that spend millions on website design and development. Companies like Sony, EA Games, Disney, Vivendi, Viacom, HBO, Time Warner and so forth. If you want to work for these companies than you should learn how to use Dreamweaver. Though Microsoft's Web Expressions is gaining market share in corporate development as well. |

If you're on a MAC try CODA otherwise (if you have the money) go with dreamweaver. It is a great program. It pretty much does everything for you.

Thanks so much guys. I sell wysiwyg software and I love it but I've always wondered about Dreamweaver. I downloaded a trial version of it and it's pretty advanced for me but I'm sure I can learn it eventually. I downloaded it to my laptop which was a big mistake as I think the software requires a wider screen to be fully effective and more easily navigated.
I just looked at Notebook++ and it looks interesting. I'll have to look at it some more. Thanks again everyone. |
I use Dreamweaver CS3 Master Edition and Love it for CSS designing.
I use Frontpage 2003 for building tabled content and designs with no CSS. FP is easier to use but it cant do 1/2 the things that DW can . I dont suggest using the built in FTP of FP either because the FP server extensions makes changes to .htaccess each time it connects and it overwrites any customizations you have . I use SmartFTP and have over 25 websites i manage set up in it |
I use to use dreamweaver, but now i use Notepad++ because it is much better for editing php files. The only bad thing about notepad++ is the search which is unfortunately character limited
|
If you don't want to install Notepad++ but just want to try it out, there is a portable version here: http://portableapps.com/apps/develop...padpp_portable
I use Dreamweaver (since college) but not extensively rely on it. |
dreamweaver for me dreamweaver cs4 and photoshop cs4 you can`t get better

I will admit that I don't use Notepad++ much anymore. It has a glitch in Windows 7 where the search window will not close. It just goes to an annoying outline that you can't get rid of. The software that I primarily use is Webuilder 2008. It supports all the languages I need support for, inline PHP debugging, code folding, HTML and CSS preview, FTP publishing, syntax highlighting, code formatting, loading pages in the browser of my choice and a lot more. I found it to be a very suitable upgrade from Homesite 5.5. For WYSIWYG editing, I have NVU installed on my computer. Its free and open source so the price is just right for me. It has most of the features you would need in a Web Editing package. NVU also runs on Windows, Linux and OSX machines. I just like the interface of Webuilder 2008 more. |
As a WYSIWYG editor nvu did have some promise, but it died a few years back.
http://bluegriffon.org/ took over, but I haven't used it, prefer to do my stuff by hand. |

I'm still using Edit Pad pro, they also make Regex buddy.
|
I'd recommend it to designers or template coders... but not PHP programmers.
|
People are snooty about Dreamweaver because of wysiwyg editor. It just stupid though, its a brilliant program. Just because you can use it as an amature doesn't mean the pros can't use it too.
It has so many useful and time-saving features. |

If you are more of a designer then it is a good option as it lets you do things that you normally would have a much harder time doing without learning some scripting. Programmers don't like it because it lets people get things done in a way that is generally looked at as "wrong" by programmers. |
I like Winsyntax for quick dirty work.
Dreamweaver, not so much any more now that I use Firebug to inspect CSS. Yeah, Dreamweaver as of CS3 still did 'Layers' (I think that's what they called them) which looked great in design view but were totally wrong in code. Still, I updated my WebSuite to CS4 just to keep up. Now I use Fireworks a lot more than I did before, just because I paid for it and have it around. |

Notepad++.. Why pay hundreds of dollars when you don't have to? |
Has anyone tried NetBeans? It's one of Sun's open source applications, and runs on plenty of platforms.
I've personally been testing it out for a month now, and while it doesn't have many "out there" features, it is actually quite good. |

I've never used NetBeans. Not a big fan of Java myself so never saw a reason to use an application primarily developed as a Java IDE.
|
I use Notepad++, and I love it's features.
Again, I didn't know about FTP.. or the code hinting? It has syntax highlighting.. i've never seen it give me code hints though. Must look into this! There's a new version of Notepad++ (5.4.5) just in case nobody noticed :p They don't notify of updates. |
