Answers Forum
Ever wanted to enable the ability to specify a certain forum as an "answer" forum, where members can post questions and select the best answer given by the community? This is similar to yahoo answers, a very effective website where users can post questions and seek answers from registered users. Answering questions can get to be a mess, keep it organized and save yourself a bit of hassle when dealing with Q&A's. As a webmaster, you already have enough on your hands to have to worry about answering questions sometimes, and need an effective way to do this! Or maybe, you just want to let your community do it for you ;)

Difference Between Answer Forum Light & Answer Forums Premium
* Enable a questions forum Lite/Premium
* Allow users to choose best answer Lite/Premium
* Integrates with vbplaza (reward answer providers) Lite/Premium
* Question Statistics on forumdisplay Premium Only
* Top Helpers on forumdisplay Premium Only
* Recently Answered on forumdisplay Premium Only
* View Answered Topics Premium Only
* View Unanswered Topics Premium Only
* Answered Topics in postbit Premium Only
* Private Message user who's answer was chosen Premium Only
* Private Message answer provider if the answer is reset Premium Only
* Control user's ability to reset their own topic's answer Premium Only
* Allow usergroups to reset any topic's answer Premium Only
* Allow usergroups to select any topic's answer Premium Only *new
* Integrates with vbcredits (reward answer providers) Premium Only
:up: Tips & Suggestions :up:
I've found that using Thread Prefixes and tweaking things up a bit is a great way to get things categories, unless you want to make forums for each or use Extra Threadfields Had been asked this a few times.

Just realize i didn't have one listed for 3.8. I'll probably still check back on both threads if anything.

Quantnet 07-15-2009 05:37 PM

Interesting, I may take a look.
This is similar to the Helpful Answers by Ted S

Question: in either the lite/premium version, is there an option for the mod/admin to turn of this feature for a certain thread.

Reason: even if we choose a forum as question forum, there are threads on that forum aren't questions but rather just discussion.

Gio~Logist 07-15-2009 08:27 PM

Not at the moment. It's been requested and something like this would very well be integrated in the next version, but right now it's completely forum based. Meaning it will literally create a pure Q&A directory.

If we go for the per-thread feature it'd probably just start off as disabling per thread in existing Answer Forums (as you mentioned), rather than assigning a thread the Q&A functionality. It just seems messy and pointless to allow people to randomly ask questions throughout the forums using this functionality, as oppose to allowing them to do it in a location in the forums where they can expect to be answered, and view other questions and what not as well. That's why yahoo answers worked so well I think (with a lot of other reasons of course).

Quantnet 07-16-2009 12:43 AM

Disabling a certain thread would be what I have in mind. Out of say 100 threads in the special QA forum, there are a handful of threads which are not QA so that may just work as well.

What is your timeline for the next version? I may just hold off purchasing the premium version until then.
Would be nice if we can get a trial version to run it for a few weeks on our forum to see how it works. You know where I can be reached.

Gio~Logist 07-16-2009 05:02 PM

You can check out the version on ProvB. Right now I'm a bit caught up with other releases and updates, but hopefully will be doing small updates to other products within the next 1-2 weeks.

Anyway, lets go back to talking about the Light version before one of us gets heat from the staff :p

How do you make the Best Answer post stand out a bit more, maybe a configurable background color?
Which template to edit?

Thanks

Brandon Sheley 07-28-2009 04:40 AM

Nice mod Gio!
I'll try to think of some way to use this one too

I uploaded this but it does not exactly show up in the usergroup permissions it seems. I went into the registered member usergroup and seen a blank spot while this hack was enabled. I disabled it & the blank spot went away - I attached an image to show you what I mean. If you could help please...I'd love to use this hack.

Watching this with a great deal of interest!

Looks promising...

That's the premium version. This version is free and you don't have that usergroup permission option.

I bought the premium unbranded version from Gio and I like the way it works, not to mention great support... support is everything!!! thanks G.

Hi Gio,

When I enable the stats, in the default style, the stats box show on the right, aligned nicely but in my custom style, it is a bit off.

I think I need to modify the answer_foot and answer_head templates a bit. Can you see the attachment images and suggest some help. I would prefer to have the stat tables move down abit and align to the thread table.

Also, right now, the top helpers show 10, but if I only have 3 helpers, the remaining 7 would be all with 0 answers, the sql would just pull the registered members by their registration date.

Quantnet 08-06-2009 01:04 AM

Another thing
You posted that to show the best answer once, use the <if> statement in the postbit template. I did that, it was fine until I found out that this would cause the PM to not display the body, and just the reply box only.

The PM use the same postbit template so it checks how many post in it.

Any other suggestion?

Understood, however, it shouldn't even show nonetheless like that to confuse someone and give them the impression of it being broken. But thank you for clearing that up for me though, it is really appreciated :D (Just wish vb.org had the thank you hack lol)

Can I ask what conditional you used? PM's don't have postid's so if any other poss passed the conditional, PMs should as well. Depending on how your conditional was formatted.

Try editing the Answer Forums - Transform Forumdisplay plugin, and changing:
PHP Code:

        eval('$header .= "' fetch_template("answer_forums_head") . '";');

To
PHP Code:

        eval('$navbar .= "' fetch_template("answer_forums_head") . '";');

This <if condition="$post[postid] != $thread[g_answer_forum_answer]"> from your site
http://www.provb.org/showthread.php?t=625

It actually took me awhile to find this and fix when people report the PM issue.

and thanks for the navbar fix.

Is there a way to change "best answer' so simply "answered' or something else? Some forum folks can be a bit sensitive for the "competition" element created by the best answer....

Duncan Idaha 09-08-2009 06:28 PM

Found it, in the VBulletin AdminCP, the phrases.

I am highly interested in a pro version (commercial) for vbulletin 4.x

I only need this additional feature: Turn on / off questions for each thread within a question forum. Not every thread in a marked "question forum" is a question. Thanks!

AeonGamer 01-08-2010 08:47 AM

This is an awesome addon. Thanks heaps.

Marked as installed :)
