If you want a simple and cheap (free) interface to admin your new vps, install both of these.

webmin & virtualmin

you can have both installed with about 5 cmds. all listed at the sites for both, in fact if you install virtualmin first, it will grab and install webmin for you.

I would have thought the cost of a hosting control panel was well worth the money when you consider all the tools that it gives "out of the box" - it can make a "green" server admin very effective very quickly.

Take a look at DirectAdmin for Linux Hosting too - Cpanel is also good - but I find DirectAdmin very easy to use interface (as compared).

If "no" to the above - then perhaps a standard "LAMP" install with phpmyadmin and webmin as suggested earlier. There are prepackaged ISOs that you can get (search Google) with all this pre-configured.

BTW - what Virtual platform is your server on? Xen, OpenVZ or Hyper-V?

Feature wise, virtualmin easily handles its own against any of those NON-FREE panels.

Easily beats direct admin in features as well as use.

Easily beats out cpanel when it comes to resources, namely ram.

Eaily beats any of them (plesk, cpanel, directadmin) simply because webmin & virtualmin are FREE

virtualmin looks cool - will check it out! thanks!

Don't misunderstand me but instead of spending the time with Panels I think it's better to learn what these buttons really mean.
Until one knows, Shared Hosting or a managed Server might be the better choice - just think about the worst case scenario someone hijacked your machine for sharing Warez or other illegal content.
Later such panels can be installed anyways, but depending on them to do anything isn't the best idea.

Install webmin if you want to get hacked to shit mate. Pay someone to secure your box and set everything up.

Just a possibility, if you kept your server updated you wouldn't get hacked.
