Can you recommend a CMS system

Have looked at EZPublish / Campsite and Interactivetools

Can you recommend a good CMS?

We are looking for a system, that allows users to join. Add events, calendarise content. Rate stuff, etc etc

Any suggestions appreciated

Drupal is one of the best and most secure CMS out there. So that is the one that I recommend.

Joomla is pretty good.

I like subdreamer very much and it integrates into vBulletin pretty seemlessly - you can see an example at http://wlsjourney.org - the homepage, support desk and links pages are subdreamer. :)

There are actually quite good CMS mods with VB here on this site - no need for things like Joomla/Drupal/Mambo - which I find really over-the-top CMS's for most people's needs (they're still excellent packages in the right application).

I use vbadvanced and Logician's WebTemplates - and find this more than adequate for my site.

JacquiiDesigns 07-07-2009 12:24 AM

^ Absolutely! How could I forget about vBadvanced?!?!? I think vBadvanced is one of the most awesome and useful modifications available for vBulletin. I make much use of it at http://JPiCForum.info --- It's very nice for custom pages as well as you can see at http://jpicforum.info/index.php?page=moderatingteam ((I hope it is okay to post my site links - it's not as advertising - god knows it's a waste of time trying to advertise a poetry forum or WLS support community on vB.org LOL -- It's for example of vBadvanced and subdreamer in action :) ))

Anyway - you may want to simply wait for vB 4.0 - I hear there is a very nice CMS integrated into the new series which may well be all you need in the default vBulletin package.

Hey Jacquii , looks very neat ( WLS ) that is, because you have integrated it so well, its hard to tell whats what in terms of scripting, good work.

Will check out SubDreamer in more detail, shame they dont post links of people using the software, and or demos.

But on a different note, what did you use to create your encyclopaedia ? Its terrific. Looks like one of Giologists hacks, but couldnt put my finger on it.

Thanks! I just found out I'll have to purchase the Web Anatomy FLV Player ARG - It's usually free for non-commercial sites but since I run ads on the site it's considered commercial by them ((sigh...)) --- Logged on the other day and say the "Must purchase license..." note instead of my videos ARG! Frustrating to say the least... Perhaps I might find another FLV player - but I adore the WA script...

Anyway - I appreciate the love - I've put a lot of time into the site. It's about 99% - almost ready for new registrations...

Um - the Encyclopedia is a vBGeek mod - Geek Auto Linker: so most all terms in the encyclopedia will be linked in the showthread as well.

Yeah - wordpress is an excellent open source app - so others say - I never liked it though.
It is quite popular and there is a wordpress/vBulletin bridge around vB.org somewhere. I've seen other sites with wordpress implemented and it looks damn good, just has never been my thing.

Wordpress isn't a CMS, it's a blog.

Expression Engine, Modx, Drupal, etc.

JacquiiDesigns 07-09-2009 05:45 AM

It can be used as a CMS though depending on your module placements I suppose... Kinda the same difference - but not really... But yeah... Kinda...

For stand alone cms, drupal every time. For integration with vb, vbadvanced or wait and see what the cvbulletin official cms is like

wordpress can indeed be used as a CMS, it's what I use on both my forums and it's fantastic

http://vbadvanced.com/ doesn't even load right now, they must be having server issues..

Unable to connect

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at vbadvanced.com.

vba is loading fine for me now

and it is my choice of CMS for vB

I guess I should elaborate.. :)

Wordpress CAN be used as a CMS, but it requires a bunch of tweaking.. I've said it before, but I have to think in the sense of providing this to a client. If a client wanted a site, and I were to do it in WP, I'd have to remove anything related to the "blog" (unless of course they wanted a blog).. It's not very practical, and it's not all that easy to do. Also, like most CMS solutions, WP has a bunch of limitations that you just have to 'settle' for. This is why I've turned to custom applications more often that not.. it's just not all that practical.

A more practical cms solution would, in my opinion, be the three options I listed earlier. Wordpress is a blog and won't be used for anything less or more when it comes to my projects.

Brandon Sheley 07-09-2009 05:48 PM

If you really wanted a well integrated portal, than vbadvanced is the answer
Wordpress can be full integrated with one 15 minute hack ;)
WP is always my suggestion just on the SEO aspect of it alone. It's the best/only option IMO if you are serious about search engine traffic. :)

JacquiiDesigns 07-09-2009 06:10 PM

Loads just fine right now...

Apologies, I am not looking at a VB integration.

I am currently looking at one of our other domains, and a full blown events management system. Thinking a CMS would work, its not appearing that we can find anything as user friendly as VB ( imo )

My issue is finding something to use on another domain ( shared server ) with our forum, that can share our user database, ad thus be extensible.

Maian events is great but very limited.
Saxon by Quirm works fine but again cannot afaik, be integrated.

So really its a cross domain system we are looking for.
I am toying with the idea of grabbing another vb license, and see if we can share databases across domains, but havent seen concrete proof that this works seemlessly without upsetting one or tother.

I'm telling you.. Expression Engine. You create an events weblog, create custom fields/categories/whatever, and pull it into your templates.. That simple, really. You could easily set parameters to sort by location, date, etc.

Eruantien 07-09-2009 08:25 PM

I'm a novice (but learning!) developer. Are you saying that Expression Engine can be pulled into my site and inherit it's style?

TimberFloorAu 07-09-2009 09:41 PM

Cheers KT will check it out.

A little confused by what you mean, but hopefully this answers your question. There are a couple ways to put css into EE, you can have a standard "css" folder in your site root directory and just include them that way, or you can create an EE template for "styles". The benefit of the latter is to be able to use EE tags in your stylesheets (setting variables to change background images, etc).. But as far as your existing site goes, it would need to be ported into EE's template system so you can use their weblog entries tag and parameters to pull data. The only thing you actually have to learn is the way to call EE data (it's pretty simple, really.. an example would be: {title}), the rest is all standard HTML. If you can code HTML, you can create some awesome sites with EE, I promise.

The best way to describe EE is to think of it as a highly configurable CMS backend while giving you full control over the markup / display for the front end. You tell it what data to store, then you pull that data into your own html, making it extremely flexible as far as layout goes.

Train-ee has an excellent tutorial to follow
, it's pretty long, but I didn't have to read through the whole thing to get a good understanding of it. It helped me out with all the, "Crap.. I'm new to this, where do I start?" questions.

So then is your site theme a subdreamer theme or a vbulletin theme?

Hey - I responded to your PM earlier:
Hi - Yes http://wlsjourney.org is a subdreamer install with integrated vBulletin. The style is a subdreamer skin actually - a heavily customized subdreamer skin.... The vBulletin style was created to match the subdreamer skin, otherwise the community forums running vBulletin would simply be the default vB style. ;)

Joomla is good and easy to use.

VonDoom 07-24-2009 12:25 AM

I personally second the Joomla CMS. I use it on many of my other domains. But have yet to integrate it into my vB forum since im quite content with vBadvanced. as a forum CMS solution.
