Wow, HTML 5 is great. Loving the new <audio> and <video> tags.

harmor19 06-30-2009 05:24 PM

It seems like Firefox 3 loaded vbulletin.org and .com a little quicker than 3.5

Brandon Sheley 06-30-2009 05:47 PM

I'm sticking with FF 2.x

rrudeboy 06-30-2009 05:51 PM

sticking with what i got, too many add-ons i can't live without :}

KTBleeding 07-01-2009 12:20 AM

Hmm. HTML 5? What about XHTML 2? I want href on all elements, and the <h> sections.. :(

Ah well, I guess either way it'll be another 10 years before all the other browsers (mainly IE) support it anyways, so it's not really usable at this point..

edytwinky 07-01-2009 02:51 AM

What are the differences between 3.5 and the most recent one before that?

Private browsing 3.5 (should'v been codenamed Pornfox)
Much Faster
HTML 5 ( New gecko engine )
TraceMonkey js engine
Location aware browsing.

5 most notable feature..
though it will take bit of time for html 5 to kick in.. i mean even css 3 is under exposed after good 2-3 years, but definately will set benchmark for other browsers.

Neither HTML 5 or CSS 3 have reached a Recommended status from the W3C. HTML 5 is still a working draft and can change drastically before it is finalized. Different CSS3 modules are in flux still with most at the Working Draft status and there can be large changes before they are finalized. They haven't even finalized the basics of CSS3 yet.

CSS 2.1 just reached Recommended Status in April of 2009. This means that the specification was adopted and it is able to be recommended for use in web development. Before a specification reaches Recommended status, it is risky to use in Web Development because it can change at any time.

As for XHTML 2, that working group is still getting parts of XHTML 1.1 to the Recommended Stage so they can actually start working on XHTML 2.

KTBleeding 07-01-2009 01:47 PM

The W3C needs to stop taking so long at setting standards. The longer they take, the more impatient browser developers get. This is why we have different ways to get useful technology to work in browsers.. such as transparency, rounded corners, etc.

One has to ask.. if the W3C wants standards as much as they say they do, why don't they step up their game and get them set?

Anyone know how well FF3.5 works with CSS3? Is it any better than 3.0, or pretty much the same?

I only lost two add-ons (out of about 7 or 8, I think) when upgrading to 3.5, and they were non-essential.

HMBeaty 07-01-2009 04:48 PM

I upgraded my add-ons myself :D Ran into too many that weren't compatible. Easy fix though :D

KTBleeding 07-01-2009 06:22 PM

The only ones that threw up an issue for me were Firebug (but they have a beta update available), and.. : drum roll : Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant.. Pffft. I don't even know why that's installed, as I never approved it.. whatever.

And to answer my own previous question: (via css3.info)
From the 43 selectors 43 have passed, 0 are buggy and 0 are unsupported (Passed 578 out of 578 tests)

YAY!

iogames 07-02-2009 02:25 PM

Oh no! I lost 50% of my add-ons last time :)

I will wait a couple of months ;)

Xencored 07-07-2009 02:25 PM

I have been with firefox for so many years its unreal But now

ive gone to chrome

Why

imo firefox is worse than IE now (Other than the addons bit)(and not like i use IE)
its just so heavy and Slow now, Which sucks because i loved it

Such as? Firefox 3.5, Internet Explorer 8, Safari 4, Chrome 2 and Opera 10 all support HTML 5 :)

Good to know. It's still unfortunate that people use outdated versions of all of those browsers. How many times have you seen someone say, "FF3 sux I'm jus goin2 downgrade to 2.0! LOL!"? And let's not get started on which IE is still the most popular. Safari, Chrome, Opera? They own such a small percentage of the internet anyways, but a typical user of them will upgrade almost immediately, I assume?

It's annoying. The internet / technology advances so drastically, it's a shame that a high percentage of users are too stubborn to let it us move forward. Stop holding web developers back, and just use one of the latest browsers already.

So I suppose that I worded my previous statement wrong, as well as exaggerated a bit.. Instead, it should be, "It'll be another two or three years before developing in HTML 5 will be more beneficial than not. Maybe not because of the browsers specifically, but because of stubborn internet dinosaurs."

Also: As I have mentioned XHTML2 a few times.. Incase no one has heard, apparently they're dropping XHTML2 entirely, and they're going to focus on HTML5 instead. Good news, bad news? I don't know. I haven't read into it far enough to see if there are any strict rules in HTML 5 that won't allow tags to be left open, capitalized garbage code, etc. But I am all for ONE set of standards, rather than several..

XHTML was a diversion that really didn't need to happen. It was based on the XML hype that it was the panacea of data transfer. They could have just applied the rules to HTML 4.2 and said "Look, you need to close your tags now." If they are ditching it for a single standard than overall it will be good for everyone. It does appear that HTML 5 will be more semantic than XHTML with the introduction of header, footer, section, article, aside, hgroup and other tags to stop using the arbitrary div to structure a document. However it does appear that they are going back to the optional closing of elements so <br /> once again becomes <br>.
