Block ALL IE versions

1 Attachment(s)
This is a simple plugin that blocks all IE versions from viewing your website. I know some people will be crying foul, given that Internet Explorer 8 has taken steps toward web standards; however, it is far behind in both function and stability. In the same time that Opera, Gecko, and Webkit have been moving toward CSS3 functioning and XHTML 2.0 functioning, IE8 has been achieving well established CSS 2.1 functionality.

This plugin is for the most radical IE haters, it will do a simple match with the user agent string and block any trident engine based browser (msie). It will show a page recommending a different browsers (Firefox, Opera, Safari, and Chrome), picture below.

The difference between this mod:

And mine is that there is NO html of your page served to the IE user. PHP deals out the notice before anything else is loaded.

Installation instructions are simple, upload the product xml file and enjoy!

You'd have to be mad to stop IE users accessing your forums.. :p

Whoa! Oblivion Knight, I haven't seen you online for like, years now it seems. I was a big fan of Gamers Euphoria. :)

But yes, this modification is not for the faint of heart. I figured since there wasn't anything like this that I might as well release it for the sake of releasing it.

Mad or not, if people want to block IE from their sites it is a choice they can make. More choice is better than less.

Nice mod. Ill never use it but it is still a good thing to have available.

I can't imagine a more moronic add-on. The majority of people on the net are still using some version of IE, like it or not.

Bots as well.

There is no bot I know that uses the trident engine. Bots scout information, not layout information. I would assume that most bots use a rendering program very similar to Lynx.

Most people will not use this, but a couple might find it interesting. I don't plan on getting more than say, ten installs total (if that), I just figured it would be good to release something like this for those who have no ability to work with php and may want it.

I would like the mod, if it allowed individual versions to be blocked. Say anything under IE7. I don't mind supporting IE7 (do it daily in my job), but IE6 and earlier are horrors which should be banned from the web.

Install this if you hate your own site and want to diminish traffic!

awesome hack. I design skins and it's always IE that causes the problems as it doesn't render anything right. You'd think Microsoft could build a decent browser by now. Especially when you get free products out there that are much better.

However like others say, look at the traffic your blocking :(

1. IE is also free.

2. IE8 is as "standards compliant" as any other browser currently.

3. ALL browsers have quirks. If you can't design websites or forum styles that don't render at least decently in IE, Firefox, and Opera, you probably should find something else to do.

4. Blaming any browser for your coding errors is puerile.

Additionally, if you do any professional development you must learn to work with all of them.

You are all right we do have to work with IE it is still over 90% of traffic, but this mod still makes me chuckle, it is something we all would have wanted to do at one time or another, it is a bit like wanting to send your mother in law to the North Pole for a VERY long time LOL!!!

Sayid 06-25-2009 06:59 AM

Installed and nominated lol

don't believe . It is just kidding .

Windows 7 users in Europe have a choice, on what browser they want to use. Internet Explorer does not come with it.

I still think alot of people will use IE.

Nice mod, but not for me.

Excellent plugin! Just what I was looking for (it's possible to do this via htaccess, which I've done before, but a plugin is just as fine). I may alter the plugin with a customised HTML page just to get the message through.

Indeed, boycotting Internet Explorer is an important move in the right direction to support internet security and web standards. Microsoft should just leave the browser business altogether.

I nominated this plugin for the MOTM.
