Please read this - Name Change Requests

USAMustangs.com 05-19-2009 08:44 AM

I don't agree with your policy on name changes. In fact, it makes no sense to me at all why a member can't request a name change.

Biker_GA 05-19-2009 08:48 AM

Because once you open the floodgates, it never stops. Forum staff members have more important things to be doing than changing names all the time.

I have the same policy on my site.

Nor does the policy say that.

the policy states:

If you have an important reason to have your name changed, please contact one of our administrators in PM.

Anybody posting such requests in the forum will be ignored.

therefor if you have a good enough reason for your name to be chaged, pm one of the admins who will look into your request :)

I've made two such request and both have been declined. Both instances it was just a request to shorten my existing screen name. I just want to abbreviate my current screen name to USAM

Sure would be nice to get an explanation why that is such a taboo around here. I could understand if someone was making frequent name changes. I certainly would not like to change the same user's screen names on a frequent basis either. However, someone making one request for a name changes takes a few seconds to do and barely qualifies as an after thought.

Oh well.

It is very time consuming and processor intensive to change a name on a forum this size. You have to update all the counters after changing a name and it can really be a pain. I would go so far as to recommend shutting the forum down while they are running. Updating the counters will probably take the forums down for about an hour. So I can see why they don't do this as often as people might like. Its very disruptive to the service.

DragonBlade 05-21-2009 05:34 AM

Wayne, what counters need to be updated? Is it some special Mods that you guys have installed here, or what? I have an "item" that can be "bought" with a shop mod I created that changes a user's name, and I've never had any problem with counters. I'd thought that was all done using UserIDs.

Is there something I'm missing? I'd like to know in case I have to consider it for my modification.

Forum, Thread and Post information counters should be updated when you change a user's name. It is not all done by userid because of denormalization for performance purposes. Having a join to the user table on every query is not needed.

Marco van Herwaarden 05-27-2009 12:13 PM

The reason we do not allow name changes in general are not of technical nature, nor are tehy because it would consume too much time from staff. We have other reasons for this that i can not fully disclose, nor will i further discuss them here, but they are part of of our efforts not to give potential scammers to much possibilities to have a long carreer of scamming people on our site.

Xphusion 05-27-2009 07:41 PM

maybe there should be a set date for this IE once ever like 3 months u can make a thread and anyone that wants a name change should reply then at a set time of that day ya run the updates...at least this way people will be happy? and people will know whats going on?

ShiZoPhreN 05-29-2009 04:43 PM

showthread.php?t=149377

and a daily cron job for max 100 user pro day and your problem is solved.. ;)...

You're vBulletin-Geeks.. its not a problem for you...

Biker_GA 05-29-2009 04:53 PM
