|
sorry. I will edit it. Didn't know it posted it. My "C" key broke off as I was typing, so I stopped to fix it. lol

hahahah
Yeah joomla is an OK free one you can even use wordpress. If you want a pay one I know phpcow is pretty good, pricey but good. |
Do you mean like wordpress or like make it with adobe programs and put it as a PDF file?

only I can't use phpcow, because I'm using a Godaddy server, and their databases only go as high as PHP 5.0 phpcow is requiring higher than that. |
Get away from godaddy......wait....I thought you did move from godaddy!? haha

You can get a magazine site up and running in WordPress in about 15 minutes. That includes installing a Theme and several addons but no content. Drupal will take a little longer but it is possible. Drupal does require a little more PHP knowledge than WordPress but should be usable. The selection of Themes/Styles isn't as great either but they do exist. When I tried Joomla, it was just a mess and any decent addon or module was an expensive commercial product. For instance, adding recipes in an easy manner will set you back $150.00. Wouldn't mind paying for them but when you need 10 modules, it gets expensive quickly. |
Don't buy phpcow. It's been a while, but I've read nothing but horrible reviews on it..
If you want something as large as phpcow, I don't think wordpress will cut it. Wordpress is merely nothing more than a blog platform that can be hacked and tweaked to work like a cms. Hacking / tweaking doesn't cut it for me. Wordpress is great... ...as a blog. It's only mediocre as anything else. I'd recommend Drupal, but there's a really annoying learning curve, and it's mandatory to install third party modules. That's a turnoff for me, since I like to do my own markup and css.. I have to unset all the module css, and then redo it to my own liking. Takes for EVER! I recommend using Expression Engine. It has a free core version, but the commercial version is wonderful. It's the most flexible platform out there, that I have tried. Hands down. If you're just doing a news portal / magazine type site, I'm pretty sure you could easily acheive it with the free core version of EE. Look into it. I'd stay far FAR away from Joomla. I couldn't stand that thing. |
ooo I forgot about Expression Engine!! Yeah that is damn good! Even their commercial pricing is moderately priced for what it does.
I read at some point to that someone was writing a module for it to work with vb instead of their forum module also... And honestly Joomla for what it does for for free isn't bad...but yeah everything you need to do with it costs you a fortune. I used it for a short time and am still paying for it... :( |
If the print publishers can use Wordpress for their online magazine sites, it should prove more than capable.
http://www.xxlmag.com/ http://www.xxlmag.com/ http://magazine.wsj.com/ The only "hacking" that is required is uploading a theme and setting the options for that theme. In the end you should try them all and find the one that works for your needs. I personally prefer Wordpress at this time because it is very easy to work with and I have never had to hack the code. Install a few plugins here and there but never had to hack code. Drupal on the other hand was a coding nightmare from the beginning. Couldn't do much of anything without hacking the code or installing a couple dozen modules. Joomla provided little flexibility in the configuration of categories or taxonomy so was pretty wasteful in the long run. I'll admit that I haven't tried Expression Engine but it really doesn't interest me for my needs. |

Of course if you're the only one who accesses it, you don't really need to hide certain things from yourself, so Wordpress could be used. I still recommend Expression Engine over WP, once you get it, it's amazing how flexible it truly is. You pretty much just handle data, any way you like. |
I had decided to go with PHPCow, but now I am regretting that decision. I istalled it, went through all the installation process, said it was done succesfully, and now, I can't access it. It kept giving me a 404 error. There was absolutely NO HELP from PhpCow, so I uninstalled it, and went with the Articles forum here. (www.missouritalks.com) so far so good. It's a vbulletin that works as an article (or magazine) forum. Looks pretty neat. I'm just having to tweak it a little to fit my needs. Just wish I had seen this sooner. Oh well. Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
