Ie 8
 

I've read a lot about IE 8 and now its out of beta i wonder if anyone has upgraded yet and what you make of it, i'm in two minds at the moment, some say its the way forward, others say its a nightmare?? :confused:

It still sucks and will continue to do so until Microsoft yanks its head out of its posterior and makes it W3 compliant!

It's better then ever for IE, but still too slow compared to the fast browsers out there. I use it for compliance checks and that's about it. Weather it's WC3 compliant or not, it's still the #1 browser that people use so you have to deal with it.

i dont have to deal with it, IE still sucks so i removed it from my os system

Its standard compliant to CSS 2.1 (passes Acid2), XHTML 1.1 at this time. It doesn't require coding tweaks like IE 6 and 7 do. Microsoft worked closely with the Web Standards Project to make this happen. Its a shame they didn't add more CSS3 or HTML5 support but the big users of Internet Explorer are corporate Intranets which are about 5 years behind these recommendations. There will be some problems with bleeding edge websites but really shouldn't affect the majority of design.

For the vast majority of websites, this is a huge step forward though. As the corporations upgrade, so will their employees and you can ditch IE6 support and embrace better CSS and things like PNG images without having to worry about workarounds.

Operationally, IE8 is slow to spawn new tabs. I think that is an architectural issue in Windows more than IE though. When you create a new tab in Firefox, it creates a new document within the same application. When you create a new tab in IE, it spawns a new instance of the application and shows you that in a container window. Since the new application has to be sandboxed, it is slow. This provides some good features in Windows 7 but does come at a cost. The scripting engine is a little slow as well. Most people won't notice but it could use a parsing update. Of course since it uses Windows Scripting Host, it would require an update to that as well as the .Net framework.

Alot of friends say to me to wait a while at least 6 months and that will give them enough time to cure any hic ups.

Another guy tells me if you install IE8 on vista its a nightmare to remove if you don't want it?? any news on this??

I have it, I just don't use it unless I need to test something.

I have 5 browsers installed atm - FF, IE8, Chrome, Opera, Safari.

And out of the 5, IE feel is the worst IMO. I am simply not liking anything about it.

I use IE 8 and FF i've had no real problems with it, as wayne says it takes a few seconds to create a new tab.

I have IE7 on another machine and i believe IE8 is superior IMO

There is no need to uninstall it if you don't like it, just don't use it.... there are many things on vista I don't use, but there is no reason to remove them.

System restore will work great for that.... :)

nothing wrong with IE8.I like it.If you dont like it use one of the other inferior products,simply as.

As my primary computer is using the Windows 7 beta, I cannot upgrade to IE8 final at this time. If I do, then I will lose Windows 7 specific functionality such as task bar integration and jump lists.

I don't have a technet or MSDN account so have to wait until this week to download the Release Candidate of Windows 7 to update my IE8 installation. I do use the IE8 beta on occasion on my computer but my primary browser is Firefox at this time.

There is no reason to want to downgrade to IE7 after the upgrade. If a page doesn't work in IE8 then click the "Compatibility" button in the address bar. There is no reason to give up W3C Recommendation compliance and downgrade though.
