the vB "Whats On Your Mind!!" Microblogging Feed
Improve community stickiness and immersion with the "Whats on Your Mind Mod"
Microblogging is gaining popularity. Microblogging really is about people just telling you what's on their mind, their thoughts, what they are doing -- that kind of stuff. These types of "topics" typically don't get posted to forums, but to Twitter and Facebook status updates. Now with this mod, you can bring status updates to your forum instead of Twitter and/or Facebook. I've been trying to build a mod and unfortunately, haven't had success but I think this would be a big hit if anyone wants to give it a shot ... I've been trying to create a SIDEBAR on my forumhome that allows forum users to post "What's on Their Mind" which gets listed in a side feed of user thoughts. This mod creates a greater community immersion -- it allows the forum to stay active in thought and ideas even between threads and posts. Here is a snap shot of the idea: http://www.thefastlanetomillions.com...onyourmind.gif Unfortunately, I've been unable to implement due to limited programming knowledge: Requirements: 1) new table in the DB: Mind (UserID / TimeStamp / StatusText) 2) Sidebar Template (Call to DB to pull last X number of Statuses) Anyone want to give it a shot? |
wow is really a nice idea
i will try to work on this xD m thought i need to finish another projects i have been procrastinating since long time ... to much hw lol xD |
So this is just a sidebar on any page on the forum/website specified, where the users can simply say what's on their mind?
Seems simple enough. Could create it tomorrow. It's too late for me right now, extremely tired. I will start on this first thing in the morning. I have plenty of time tomorrow, probably can get something done. Will leave this up and look for any suggestions, and give you guys a update every so often. Oh, and I could use this too, that's why I'm interested :) Are you guys looking for anything special, besides a security enabled "What's on your mind" sidebar? The AdminCP Options can be as such: - vBulletin Options --- What's On Your Mind? ------ [yesno] Enable WOYM? ------ [yesno] Show WOYM for guests? ------ [blank ] Usergroups to display for? ------ [blank ] How many statuses to show? ------ [textarea] HTML for beginning of the table? ------ [textarea] HTML for end of the table? ------ [textarea] HTML for each status update? (note: $altColorWOYM for alt1/alt2 alternation) How to implement would be something like <!-- What's On Your Mind --> $WOYM_Enable_Here <!-- What's On Your Mind --> |
Quick update, the product is almost done. I'm not much of a designer should anyone want to design it. I just have to implement the front-end for the user, administrative tools, and make the table in the db.

Wow, thanks CodingMonkey for looking into this. I think this MOD would be a great add-on to help merge the micro-blog trend that really takes away activity from forums. (It would only go on the Forum home)
ADMINCP Options: 1) Number of updates to show - yes 2) I think a post count restriction would be nice to prevent spammer use. Thanks again. PS: Maybe down the road after the basics are worked-out, the updates can automatically update to Twitter and FB status updates, or vice versa. |
only display from friends or all members (option in admincp)
share a link 'like this' link, then shows who 'liked this' |

Here's a quick look at the Admin CP options.. no need to post this but it's something to show that it's getting accomplished :)

2. Share link, meaning to email the comment or something? 3. "Like Comment" link, and a list on a new page of those who "liked" it? Quote:
2. Done. PS: Probably future function, if possible. I have never associated with the Twitter and FB APIs before, this will be fun... :) |
Awesome!! Thx for the status update, mightly impressive.
