Facebook Connect mod for vBulletin

TigerC10 04-18-2009 08:04 PM

Well, there's already vbTwitter which lets your users post to their twitter accounts from within your site.

https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=204694

Is that not enough for you?

Not really. The way I understood it the mod was for existing members who could use the UserCP.

What I want is to make it easier for visitors who are members of twitter to login to my site without having to register, like they can if they belong to Facebook using my Connect with Facebook button.

That way visitors to my site, or anyone else's vBulletin forum, have a choice to register or to login using the Sign in with Twitter button or the Connect with Facebook button. Any login system that makes a visitor a member quickly and easily will only increase the likelihood of them joining a forum.

The Facebook connect mod I mentioned works quite well, but from reading the thread it appears that mod can't easily be modified to Twitter capable and I haven't found any vbulletin mod that does a quick and simple autologin for twitter members.

nick_ramsay 05-15-2009 01:29 AM

Ditto this request. With anti-spam checks and email confirmation, registering has become a hassle for people. Twitter is huge now and I'm using Twitterfeed to update my Twitter account with new forum threads. If Twitter users see those tweets, I'd like them to be able to follow them to the forum, sign in with Twitter and respond. It would boost forum membership dramatically.

DotSauce 05-17-2009 04:55 AM

Dying for this mod.. would be incredible for my forum specifically and any forum wishing to promote and gain more users through Twitter.

Mr Chris 06-04-2009 02:03 AM

I would pay for this mod.. I want it badly!

great explanation for why this mod is needed. i hope someone picks this up

Wired1 06-27-2009 07:55 AM

FYI this is a good walkthrough.

Letting your users “Sign In With Twitter” with OAuth and
How to quickly integrate with Twitter’s OAuth API using PHP. The latter post is a bit more technical.

Haven't looked at the Facebook Connect mod to see the level of difficulty of doing something like this, but it's definitely doable. I've PM'd sllik, the author of that mod to weigh in on this thread. Maybe it's something he's willing to tackle as it's so similar and a lot of his could could be re-used for this mod.

bbau01 06-29-2009 10:43 PM

I have to admit, I would kill for this also.

frogster 07-01-2009 08:13 PM

Well if everyone would kill for it, lets get together and pay someone for it...

There is a website called rpxnow.com that already has all login options and updates them for you whenever there is a change (myspace, facebook, twitter, google, yahoo, etc). This is just like facebook connect BUT it has all of the other logins available as well. Now all we need is to have someone create a plugin for it. A plugin for this already exists for Wordpress here http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/rpx/ . I have already installed it on my WP blog and it works great.

I also put in a request to rxp to have this plugin/mod created as you can make requests and they actually listen...you can vote for it too without registering here https://rpx.uservoice.com/pages/8895-general . Look for the "make a vbulletin plugin" and vote.

Rpx has the same issue that the facebook connect mod is having in terms of not providing the email address but that is because Facebook does not allow it. As soon as facebook starts providing the email addresses (which I hear is soon as all other login options are providing it) Rpx will take care of updating it on their end without anyone who has this installed on their end having to do much.

What do you guys think???

Majidm 07-28-2009 02:30 PM

I hacked up the Facebook Connect plugin and got it working with Twitter oauth... PM me if you're willing to help test it out

Majidm 07-31-2009 03:23 AM

Test out Sign in with Twitter & vBulletin @ http://www.rocbattle.com

Please let me know how it works out!

Brandon Sheley 07-31-2009 03:45 AM

OMG that is awesome! We're now getting tons of traffic by using the sharethis button to tweet our best posts... 15-30 guests per tweet, and we use tweetlater to set up a tweet every half hour - we've just started doing this 24 hours ago- but no conversions to members. I'm for Full integration with twitter.
This plugin looks great on rocbattle - where can we get it?

Majidm 08-21-2009 06:20 PM

I will post it up in a few weeks.

I signed in with Twitter oAuth, (username DotSauce) works great.

Small bug I encountered is that on the confirmation page after choosing my nickname there was still a login form being displayed even though I did not have to login. Once I clicked back to the forum homepage the login form disappeared.

Im sure myself and many others would appreciate it very much if you could release the code / plugin to the community as soon as possible! :)

Chuta 10-03-2009 10:35 PM

I Want The http://www.rocbattle.com Hack!
It`s Perfect!

emailapphost 10-09-2009 07:01 AM

I want this too!

DotSauce 10-20-2009 07:47 AM

I tried messaging Majidm, no response...

Sad, this would be an amazing mod with huge benefit for growing forum community.

Majidm 10-20-2009 05:48 PM

The way it is put together right now is very hacked.. if someone wants to clean it up and release it, please contact me directly.

Do you have access to "The Hatchery" here Majidm?

It would seem like the idea place to start. You should be able to post your code even if it is hacked together.

Great site btw - signed in using my twitter!

Mum 05-08-2010 09:41 PM

Any mod released for this yet? Still hoping!

DotSauce 05-15-2010 06:23 PM

Sadly no mod yet.

This would be incredible for growing forum and getting new members - I am astounded nobody has done yet :(

Any suggestions on someone I could hire to do it at reasonable rate?

Crimm 05-25-2010 02:39 AM

I keep running across this thread. I'm actually playing with Twitter Oauth for a Twitter app, and was contemplating putting it into a mod.

I was hoping that it would pan out so I wouldn't have to do the work :)

I guess I'll see what I can do ... I'm slow though due to tons of other projects. I'll see if I can put anything together for people. Twitter Oauth is something I really want.

If someone finds something or has any notes ... that would be great to share or to release so I don't have to work on this :P LOL I mean I'm really slow :P

*EDIT* - Yeah this will take me a while. My old functions for vb3 that I used to use to register users, etc. doesn't work anymore. I'm going to have to start there. :'(

Mum 05-25-2010 02:47 AM

Fingers crossed it won't take you too long!

Hopefully it won't. I need it for my site, but like I said ... I'm a slow poke :)

Anyway, here's where I stand:

Registering users automatically: Check
Emailing users the information: Check
Connecting to Twitter and pulling information: Check
Pulling information from Twitter consisting of username, etc.: Check

Now the hard part... Pulling all that together. I'm hacking away because I'm tired, but it shouldn't be too hard.

The REALLY hard thing will be automatic login. I've never done that before. I'll tackle that last :P

*EDIT*: I'll also have to figure out logic if the username exists, etc etc etc. I'm calling it a night ... I'll play with it over the next week when I have time.

Mum 05-25-2010 04:50 AM

Thanks so much for giving this a go!

Crimm 05-25-2010 05:06 AM

Just don't get your hopes up too much in case my life takes over because it'll always have priority :)

Mum 05-25-2010 05:58 AM

As a mum i totally understand :)

Crimm 05-26-2010 09:07 PM

Just an update. I have gotten a good bit done today. I'll have a definitive update on where I stand with this tonight.

Hopefully I'll be that much closer :)

Mum 05-27-2010 12:55 AM

This is so exciting, thank you so much for all your effort.

Crimm 05-27-2010 04:07 AM

Okay I didn't get much done tonight. Not feeling motivated enough :P

I'll update this as I go: http://debugge.com/showthread.php?t=192

The major 2 things I have to get down pat are 1) Auto-login 2) Allowing users to link the twitter account with their existing vB account.

I'll try to get those 2 done before the beginning of next week and make them my target goals. Once I get those it'll be pretty much just cleaning up the code and making it pretty output wise.

:)

Another important thing to note is that you can't pull the users email address from the Twitter API, so it'll have to be something that the user inputs during a twitter registration step. Can't be helped it doesn't seem.

Mum 05-27-2010 05:09 AM

Oh that's awesome! Am so hanging out for this :) Twitter people excited too :)

Crimm 06-01-2010 05:46 PM

I've been on vacation, but getting back on to it this week. :)

I'll have more regular updates here: http://debugge.com/showthread.php?t=192

Mum 06-01-2010 07:32 PM

Soe exciting :)
