Share members and threads between two licensed vB's

I have one leased board on domain #1. I am going to buy another lic. and set up another board on domain #2. I want to share members, threads and post between the two until my lease expires in October. Is there a mod that will allow this? Both boards will be installed on the same host account.

Have domain#2 point to the same SQL server?

The trouble with pointing both to the same sql server is that there is path information in the database. The path would be right for one of the instances but not the other.

Are you effectively changing from a leased license to an owned license? If so, when the lease expires just buy the owned license instead and change the license key. Might be worth contacting the sales people over at vbulletin.com.

My leased license is good for another six months or more. I went with a leased license to give vB a try. I am very happy and have modified and expanded my plan. I am running a small local community board with the corresponding local community name. I want to expand the area a little with an own license and a new name. I want to leave the existing leased board up, running and growing until the license is ready to expire. I'll forward everyone over to the new board when that time comes.

What I want to do is use the content from the first board on the second so when I go live, it already has something to offer. I was hoping for some sort of mod that would allow both boards to share content, as well as members. Something that would show new members and posts on both boards.

Am I asking for too much?
There has to be a way to do this.
I know this is beyond my knowledge.
I was hoping someone else might have done this already.
Maybe someone might want to tackle this project? :D

Running two separate boards off a single database is complicating something that possibly doesn't need the complication...

Another tack that might be worth considering is announce on the existing board that you are rebranding... new look/name coming soon. Then, just change the name of the existing board/change the template (if you want) and job done. Finally, just before the leased license expires, buy an owned license (although just check with the vBulletin sales guys that this can definately be done). This way, you don't even need to worry about installing another vBulletin instance...

I was not sure about this. I asked at vB.com and they sent me here. I guess I was just hoping it was possible. This would just help me do what I was hoping for, to build membership and posts from two avenues at the same time.

This is sort of my back up plan. Just to move everything over once I get everything set up.

If I am setting this up on a new domain, wouldn't I need a fresh install to import the database over to? I planned on at least a one month overlap of two licensed boards. I want to make sure I get everything set up the way I want it before I import the database.

Although, I would still like to run them together If I can.

I use domain pointing to the same Vbulletin.

It's actually really easy.

I have 3 URLs all pointing to the same Vbulletin with no problems.

Then just announce to your members with time to spare that you will be dropping the first URL.

dekaybrown has got it bang on! you can change the domain vbulletin runs on... to do so...
  1. Starting with your existing vBulletin & URL (e.g. www.mydomain.com)
  2. Add your new domain to the same hosting account (so now the files can be browsed as either www.mydomain.com/myfiles.htm or www.myotherdomain.com/myfiles.htm)
  3. Acessing your vBulletin from your original domain, go to the administration panel
  4. In the settings section, change the installed URL of the board to the new domain name
PM me if you want... I can send you my email address if you want to chat about this more.

This is exactly what I am trying to do. I just do not know how to do it.

Basically these three domain all have the same board up and running with the same info.

What needs to be done to accomplish this?

I'm not sure who your web provider is, but I took a little time and made this for you from a screen shot.

I use blue domino, very pleased with the service.

I would assume that most "User control panels" look similar.

http://www.mypetforums.com/pointers.gif

The first two as you can see open the very same home page.

The two with blue hands pointing at them open "clones" (the same page "parked" in different folders)

I had originally came up with the "thamfriends" name to honor a forum I was very active in, but they banned me for starting my own, and I refuse to "honor" a forum I am no longer welcome at, so I got really lucky when someone forgot to pay their bill for "mypetforums.com", I snapped it right up the day it was released!

Since I have gone online six weeks ago, we have now got 51 active members, 6 thousand posts, and nearly 400 threads, Very proud of that accomplishment in only six weeks time.

I do recommend that if you are going to take this seriously, learn some basic HTML, CSS, and java script commands. In the end you will be glad you did.

Vbulletin allows for a "test" forum with the same license, Set one up and PLAY with it.

I have found over the last six weeks that Vbulletin is VERY customizable, the people here are super, and most of all it's fun to learn how this stuff works!

Thanks for the tips on redirection. My host uses "Direct Admin" for the control panel. The re-direction tool looks different for sure. I will be using a home page at the "second" domain. The "first" domain uses vBadvanced. So, if I have to, I'll just link it from there.

I was really hoping for some tips on how to accomplish my original request. Searching around here, I have found many people asking for the same thing. I am guessing it must be related to piracy issues or something. No one seems to want to post how to do it. I just cannot imagine this mod would be that much more difficult to accomplish than many of the others that are here.
