IEDeathMarch.org - block IE 1.x - 6 from your Site

1 Attachment(s)
Hi,

this is only a simple Hint to block and redirect all Users to a customized *.html Page if they use a Internet Explorer Version older then Version 7.

You can do it a lot of Ways - but i guess this one is the best to describe your Users what is happening. ;)

INSTRUCTION:

At the very first Line of headinclude Template enter:

Code:

<if condition="is_browser('ie') AND !is_browser('ie','7.0')"><meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0; url=http://www.YOURDOMAIN.de/ie6.html"></if>
see Attachment for my Version of the ie6.html and feel free to edit it to your Language and Style and then upload it.

THANKS GOES TO POGO FROM VBULLETIN-GERMANY FOR THIS HINT.

For more Information about the Background of this take a look at:

thank you for work

redlabour 03-21-2009 08:20 AM

Thanks - but it was not really "work" - just a Collection of the Hint, a free Icon and the Idea of the *.html. :)

BTW - it would be nice if someone can upload a english ie6.html.

But why would you want to block a browser?? Whats the problem if a person still uses IE6.

Ross L 03-21-2009 10:48 AM

Great idea, though maybe this could be expanded slightly. Instead of blocking the user from browsing the forum (as every visitor is a visitor at the end of the day), every time they go on a new page, they get a drop down warning them that the site does not support IE6 and provide download links to Chrome, Firefox,IE7/8 and Opera.

I agree that blocking the browser completely may be a bit over the top, but you have to weigh up the amount of additional work that has to be put in on a site to get it formatting correctly in numerous browsers is more than enough, without having to support a crappy browser with the standards compliance of a cheap hooker. Not to mention the security risks you run using an outdated browser!

There are 3 types of people who run IE6:

People who don't know other browsers exist
People who don't have a clue about how they can update their computer software
People who work for companies whose IT department is just plain lazy or incompetent

I personally will not be supporting IE6 now that IE8 has been released.

There's 1 more type of people who run IE6 primarily:

People who are not technical, and doesn't care AT ALL what browser they are running. They are happy with whatever they have in their PC. They just want the website to *open*.

I think the above category comprises of the largest number of people. Because XP is still being used largely, therefore IE6 (shipped by default) is also being used.

I think its the worst thing to do to block a browser. vb is able to handle most of things for ie6. Remains the PNG issue, then there is already a nice fix available. :)

It is never to late to learn using Windows Update. ;)

But by the Way - this is of course a bit to hard for Boards with 40% or more using IE6. And we have only 15% Visitors using IE6. :)

.....need someone to show them what to do.
I have announced the blocking to my Members two Months before and given Support for Updating and Hints.

Thanks for the compliment, because I still am using IE6.
Seems you are the incompetent one yourself because you forgot the main reason:
People who NEED IE6 (like my hosting company), because they have to see how other users, still using IE6 look at their webpage. You can't have a ICT business website online and not support IE6 while it's still out there, because they won't take you serious as hoster or webdesigner if already your homepage looks "strange" (because they are using IE6).

It's a great mod for things like forums and hobby websites.

But it would be better if people would not make that kind of stupid comments without thinking a bit further.

Phantasmagoric 03-21-2009 01:49 PM

I'm against the forced blocking of any browser myself, just personal choice really, it isn't fair really and it does smack a little of being a bully to me to be honest. I wont support IE6 on my site and the download sections have a warning graphic stating as much, this gives each user the 'choice' to decide for themselves if they still want to use my designs.

Having something that would put a dropdown message telling guests how they could update their browser would indeed be a good idea, that I could go for.

I must agree that I feel IE6 was a dreadful err' on Microsoft's part, I don't believe IE7 is any better in truth considering it's security vulnerabilities, let's just hope IE8 is a step in the right direction.

A lot of people are now not supporting IE6 now IE8 is out as it is outdated (including banks and web designers / developers)! There is such a thing called "Technological Progression". People still use IE5, but very, very few people actual support it. If we keep fixing sites to work with older browsers, we will still be supporting IE6 when IE10 comes out! You have to roll with the times and if people are being left behind, it's their own fault.

It's the same argument as people who complain that vista doesn't work on their old outdated PC...

I find no reason good enough to *block* a browser. The MAX that can be done is to show them a dismissible notice.

Its late for my grandmother. ;)

Isn't 15% too much? You are straight away blocking 150/1000 ??

Again, you are missing the point here sir! Not everybody is technical. MANY people browse the internet for fun (not knowing the difference between OS and browser). They don't give a damn what is mozilla and what is microsoft, and they dont want to.

And yes, I don't fall in any of the 4 categories of people described above. I use Firefox myself and have Chrome and IE6 for testing purposes. :)

Sweeks 03-21-2009 03:47 PM

I think you should all try out this instead: http://www.otherroaddesign.com/pages/kapp.html.

it gives users browsing in IE6 a simple alert that their browsing experience may not be great on your site and a link to upgrade their browsers.

At least it doesnt block the site for ie6 users.

I completely agree with your second reply. But it would be better when Microsoft itself would put an end of life notice to IE6, like they did with IE4 and 5.
That would make life easyer for everybody. Problem is when having a company, you have to also keep clients in mind with older browsers until they finally upgrade, which sometimes takes too long indeed.

@Sweeks: Nice tip!

Lol Ive used it on our site ever since my friend made it. Ive always hated IE6 for the PNG problems mainly. Check it out it, honestly it is much better than this and your IE6 users will still be happy with it.
Heres a link to the demo, NOTE: Only works in IE6 lol

2. That is of course the main application area for this Mini-Mod. :)

Which will never happen. :(

So, all I am saying is rather than blocking people completely off a website, a notice is more than enough. My sites look cool in IE6, no probs at all.
