vB.org Smilie additions: Part 2 - Design contest

*** The submission period has been extended until 30 April. ***

This is the second part of the vBulletin.org smilie extension project.

During the first stage of this project we asked our members to suggest emotions they want to express in smilies that where not covered by our current smilie set. Based on the suggestions (and number of times a suggestion was made), and a final vote on the list by our staff, we decided on adding the following list of emotions to the vBulletin.org smilie list:
  • Clap/Applause
  • Bang head up against wall in frustration
  • ROFL / LOL
  • Oops
  • Headscratch
  • Woot
  • Thanks
  • Cry
  • Whistle
  • Shrug/for shame (shaking head)
  • Blush
  • Hug/Love
  • Face Palm
  • WTF
The next stage is to request our members to design a set of smilies to match these emotions to be used on vBulletin.org.

Rules for this stage:
  • Only smilies that you have designed yourself may be entered. Using smilies that you have not created yourself or for which you do not hold the copyright may not be submitted!
  • Only submit complete packs, covering all the emotions in the above list.
  • Dimensions:
    • If submitting only smilies for the new emotions: 16x16 to make them fit with our current smilies.
    • If submitting an entire set of new smilies, both current and new emotions: any dimension between 16x16 and 20x20.
  • vBulletin.org must be granted irrevocable permission to use the finally selected smilie set.
  • Smiliesets must be submitted in a single zip-file attached to a post in this thread.
Smilie sets may be submitted until 31 march. As we do realize that creating a set of smilies is not a 1 hour job, we will extend this period if too many members want to submit, but can not deliver it in time, but to prevent this project running too long 31 march is our first aim.

After the submission period for smilie sets has closed, we will let our members decide which set to use on vBulletin.org by a poll.

If selected the designer of the set will be credited on our smilie list page.

Staff reserves the right to deny a submission.

I like the idea of 20x20px full smiley set being accepted as a full set. I would have submitted the set but I know it wouldn't be entertained.

On a lighter note well done for allowing members to submit there own and other creations it's a step forward in my books so nice work.

Every set will be looked at. Please, submit them! (for the record, I actually use 3 of your sets, so I am totally not against using your smilies for any site.)

I'm sure you didn't. But it's nice of you to say so. https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/external/2009/03/16.gif

If I may, The bang head on wall. Normally amongst other packs this emoticon always has a larger width due to the addition of the wall. I would suggest you allow this emoticon to be slightly larger (width by a few pixels) it wouldn't break any alignment with the inline formatting as it will only be the width that is slightly longer.

You may want to check this emoticon in it's various designs to confirm this. :)

I would say that rule is really for the fact of if they are like 30 x 30 or what not.

Here you go. Here's the banghead emoticon and all the emoticons in this design are the same height but their are times when additional elements are added the width is made slightly bigger. https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/external/2009/03/15.gif

Just suggesting so quality isn't comprimised whether you take the advice is entirely up to you. :)

I am in the same boat here. I use three or four sets myself.

My 8-year-old sister proudly declared that she knows that "WTF" means "Wow, That's Funny" and has been using it all over the internet.

They need to be full sets, in accordance with the list posted above.

Dream 03-31-2009 07:48 PM

Still no submissions?

Marco van Herwaarden 04-01-2009 07:17 AM

As it takes more time to get submission on this project, we will extend the submission period until 30 April.

Shelley_c 04-01-2009 02:09 PM

It will take 20-40 minutes to design a set of emoticons and I'm speaking fully custom and 10 seconds to acquire a pack (consistent) with each other with the emoticons staff choose.

It's obvious noone will submit a set so I suggest reverting back to the original thread in the suggestions area and checking out the links that were provided for you.

If it takes that long, why don't you submit one?

I think Shelley has contributed enough in graphics:

nexialys 04-02-2009 01:37 AM

she just need one more release to beat the 99 ...

(does that mean she is already at 99?)

Marco van Herwaarden 04-02-2009 08:34 AM

We are not running this project to please the staff. The members have asked for extra smilies and we give them the opportunity to influence additions to our smilieset by submitting their sets.

If nobody wants to submit new smilies, then it is also fine with us and we will continue to use the existing set.
