Does anyone garden?

We are getting ready to start one... actually more like a crop then a garden LOL. We live on 8.9 acres and we are going to use some of it for good!

Do you garden? What do you grow? What websites to you find helpful?

So far youtube seems to have my vote hands down!

Any pics? I have some from before I cleared the field. DH showed me how to use the commercial walk behind 52in mower (it has one of those wheely things you stand on). It took me about 2 hours to knock the brush down, it was really over grown. LOL Then the next day DH went through it with the bobcat and tossed it up real good. The roots where really deep from all the field junk growing in there.

Its mostly level now and I've started to map it out. I'm in Florida, so much of my planting needs to be done now and I've already started a bunch of things that will be ready for transplant in about 3 weeks.

I love it and its very rewarding So, are there any other gardeners here?

Again, photos please, if you have them... any garden... container, patio etc...

I have some before and afters I'll post later. :)

I just got a little cactus besides my computer

UncoderMom 01-22-2009 10:06 PM

hehe Must be a popular house plant there.

Actually when I was a kid, here in Florida there was cactus EVERYWHERE! Everyone had it as part of their landscaping, now its very rare.

last week, i bought 3 plants because we are rehearsing the whole appartment and we have new furniture, new paint, etc... so i needed some plants, but that's about it... gardening, we tried that 3 years ago, with a community garden, and we gorgot it about 3 weeks after starting...

Try something NEx! LOL Try a tomato plant (the grape tomatoes grow very fast). They do VERY well in pots! My kids LOVE them too!

My youngest (3 yr old) kept stealing them all off the plant (eat them) every time he'd see a red one. Then proudly admit his theft later. Cute... Hes so excited this year! HE wants to plant carrots. hehe

I have a pic of him helping... hes helping to excavate the garden. haha

i have girls Lisa, and they are not into gardens or excavation... lol

btw, the tomato thing would interest the girls but like for the 75 gallons aquarium, i'd be the one dealing with the maintenance.. lol

Oh... marine plants... do you think sub-marine tomatoes exists ?!

GSeybold 01-22-2009 11:19 PM

Hi Lisa,
Oh man, I'm jeoulous. Gardening is such great fun, great stress reliever and great exercise. I'm not able to garden anymore but I used to be a major euthusist. I found a bunch of great websites that I have stored somewhere. I'll look them up and post for you. The Dept of Argiculture here in the U.S. used to have a great site full of info a nd the U.K. had one similiar.

Nothing like fresh vegtables right out of the garden. Yummy. Can't wait to see your pics.

Gabby

UncoderMom 01-22-2009 11:32 PM

That would be awesome Gabby! We will be starting with about a quarter acre... I'll keep you posted. hehe And, Ooh God yes, a lot of exercise! LOL

I wonder if we have any VB gardeners forum owners here teehee...

Nex... take a look. LOL quite easy really. Little effort to them in a container too! You can start them from seed or buy them small from a garden center. Try the grape or "patio" varieties.

*must convert Nex to a gardener lolol

GSeybold 01-22-2009 11:48 PM

Oh yes, when I lived in Ca, we did some container gardens for all different kinds of tomatos. It was so much fun for me and the children, especially the trailing fines. Make sure you have a few pie tins full of beer laying around as snails love patio tomatoes for some reason but they like beer better. ;)

Hi Lisa,
Here is the website address for the Department of Agriculture'ss gardening for consumers.

yeah, this little girl on this picture, is interested by the tomatoes, Lisa...

... that's one of the plants i got last week... (the green thing, not the girl, which i have since 2001!)

UncoderMom 01-23-2009 12:07 AM

Shes adorable Nex! I havent seen any family pics in awhile!

And, oooooh YES! She looks like she'd LOVE the tomatoes!! :P

Magnumutz 01-23-2009 06:13 AM

Oh yeah, from the age of 7 or 8 til about 16 or so, i've had such a "garden" at my country house.
It's so much healthier and rewarding to go out to your garden and get a tomato, onion, cabbage or even watermelon.

Ok, i can't remember all the vegetables i had back then, but it was quite a crop for only me and my mom :D

We even had a schedule:
Morning: Eat, work on the "crop".
Afternoon: Eat, relax... read a book or something.
4-5 PM: Work on the "crop".
7-8 PM: Water the "crop".
Dinner, sleep and all that again on the next day :p

Have a raised bed in the backyard. Plan on adding three more this season. Last season we grew tomatoes, squash, eggplant, and leeks. This year I plan on planting pie pumpkins, peppers, nasturtiums and a few other things as well. We also have a cherry and an apricot tree in the yard. I would like to add a peach and a plum tree.

Paul M 01-23-2009 08:37 PM

I have some grass, it gets cut a few times in the summer, thats the extent of my gardening. :)

nexialys 01-23-2009 09:01 PM

... i imagine Wayne asking Paul if he could take care of the garden during his absence... oh what a surprise at his return... lol

Dean C 01-23-2009 09:11 PM

I'm not a fan of photosynthesis, so I tend not to facilitate it by cultivating vegetation unnecessarily.

In a properly built garden, maintenance is so much easier than lawn maintenance. I'd remove my entire front lawn and plant edibles if it were for "Attractive Nuisance" laws and the fact that my city would consider it improper use.

:o Oh man, that would drive me crazy. I guess I got a little obsessive with my lawn though. I mowed it twice a week, and fertilized often and I can't wait for spring so I can start again.
