Circuit City Closing Down

Circuit city announced today that it was going out of business so who is going to see if they can get some good deals.

nexialys 01-16-2009 10:07 PM

maybe some CD/DVD boxes, or heated coffee cup... i think it's all we can grab from that company... there never had any interesting stuff in that boutique anyway... Radio-Shack in the past, Circuit-City now, same thing, just the name changed... i got my first Tandy there, by force.. lol

Canadian stores aren't closing. Only the US stores.

Will have to see if they have any good deals on computers and other electronics in the next 60 days. They plan on having all 556 stores closed by March 31st though. Seems like they might have found a buyer for their online operations though. Doesn't help the people that work in the retail stores but we'll see how many warehouse and distribution jobs it saves if the deal goes through.

That's so strange as they just opened a new one near me.

I'll have to buy all my electronics online from now on. Only other electronics store we have locally is Best Buy and I refuse to shop there because of the lack of customer service. Well there are Wal-mart and Target but their selections are a joke and the customer services is also non-existant.

I guess Amazon will get more of my money.

GSeybold 01-17-2009 12:51 AM

I hate to say this but I'm not sad to see big organizations like this go but really hate to see people losing their jobs. Maybe give the mom and pop's a new shot? Remember that customer service?

TigerDirect.com FTW!

Their customer service is a tad on the slow time should you have any problems with an order, but it still beats the Best Buy customer service and they're always more than willing to make it right.

Ex: 2 weeks ago, i bought an OEM vista dvd from them, this week they run a special giving away a free 500GB harddrive with the purchase of vista OEM dvd, I email them and my new HD is on the way

iBardia 01-17-2009 01:10 AM

Thanks for reminding me..
Might get Vista

Thanks for letting me know in this thread, I still have a $50 gift card from two years ago that I need to use there.

nexialys 01-17-2009 06:56 PM

it's the right time to invest your gift Tyler.. lol

Went to the local CC yesterday, and the deals aren't very good yet.

10% off most electronics and 30% off some other things, but better deals can still be found around the internet or even best buy. I'd wait another week or two and check back on them ;)

nexialys 01-18-2009 06:09 PM

remember that the rebates will hit only their own brands, because the mega brands like Sony (if they sell Sony's stuff) will be returned to the distributor when they close the shop, they would loose more if they apply big rebates on that...

*shudder* NOT Target. Not for me, at least. They're so liberal-leaning, it's sickening.

Sad to see Circuit City go- they've been around as long as I can remember. Always loved the electric plug-shaped doorway.

I'm thinking Wayne's on to something- online buying for electronics. Thankfully, I live in a pretty big city, that still has some small city charm, ensuring we still have a few "Mom and Pop" spots that sell some of my favorite electronic gizmos.

I was never a big fan of Circuit city... over priced and poor service..

davidw 01-20-2009 10:42 AM

Where I live, Circuit City was better 2-to-1 over Best Buy. Best Buy was always higher in price (for what I was shopping for) and the associates were not-so-helpful. In most cases, I either bought from Circuit City or Newegg. Of course, each region is different.

I'll be checking at the end of the month to see what deals they have.

Really? I always found their prices to be better than Best Buy which is just across the street. The only time Best Buy would beat them in price is if item was on sale. If it was, I just took the flyer into Circuit City and asked them if they had the item and what the price was. They always matched it.

As for customer service, the local Best Buy requires that you give your photo ID to the security guard so that you can get a key to use the restroom. When you return the key, you can have your ID back. They actually have three cameras in the hallway leading to the restroom and a security guard at the beginning of the hallway.

My local Best Buy also lacks prices for many items on the shelf. If you want to find out what the price is, the customer service representative on the floor will tell you that you have to wait in line at the registers even though they can do item lookups at numerous computers around the store. If you had a question about a product they could never answer it either. They would go to the card on the aisle or look on the box to try and answer questions. If those things answered my questions, I wouldn't ask them.

I am very sad that Circuit City is closing.

Same here on paragraphs one and three.

I've always had a good experience with Best Buy, but I don't live in California either... LOL
