http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/

Anyone try Windows 7 yet? Still in Beta, but its available to download and boot-up.

Caddyman 01-12-2009 11:29 PM

I'm using it now, pretty good compared to vista IMO, i am liking it still finding things out and playing with it.

Just wondering, any compatibility issues with current programs on your computer?

Caddyman 01-13-2009 12:01 AM

only thing was with the ATI graphic drivers (i think that was the message i got) and it fixed itself via update. I have LOTS of proggies on my PC too, dreamweaver, photoshop, pidgin, office suite, etc etc, everything seems ok to me. Running on a Dell XPS420

puertoblack2003 01-13-2009 12:38 AM

Yep, i confirm it my self, i love this one alot better then the vista version, the speed is alot better, the boot time is quicker.I think they change alot of the kernels in windows 7 to improve it.I think this version is based of windows xp pro.

Plus i didn't have to install any of the drivers except for my wireless since i use linksys. But over all i give it a 10

Ryan Ashbrook 01-13-2009 12:40 AM

I'm running it as well, and I've only booted into Vista once since installing and that was to copy my music over.

I feel it's a great improvement over Vista. :)

Caddyman 01-13-2009 01:36 AM

the way the taskbar works and grouped items in the taskbar is really nice.

iAnj 01-13-2009 07:07 AM

THe OS is pretty stable and nice looking, i prefer it in some ways even if its in beta

eddy315west 01-13-2009 08:07 AM

Im running the 64 bit version works great ! i was using vista 64 but this right here they took it up a whole new level !

Actually no, it's based off Vista, but an improved Vista.
From the start, they (Microsoft) wanted to make the new OS, with Vista matching system requirements.

Quote from Softpedia: "A computer with a 1-GHz 32-, or 64-bit (x64) processor, 1 GB of system memory, at least a DirectX 10 graphics card, if not even DirectX 9, with over 128MB of graphics memory, and a 40 GB hard drive will be more than enough to power Windows 7."

So yes, Windows 7 will probably be a good OS.
I'm sure going to try it once i get a new PC.

UKBusinessLive 01-13-2009 06:29 PM

I take it no ones running Windows 3.11 anymore

I still have the 12 disks, just need to find a 3.5 floppy drive :D

I'm using Vista at present and i'll probably take a peep at the weekend when i get more time ;) Thanks for the link ;)

Caddyman 01-13-2009 07:06 PM

Lots of good info here all

Have been running it for a few days now and really like it. Have IIS installed as a webserver so I can learn the newer version better. Also have MySQL installed and PHP working under FastCGI.

Have a few sound glitches here and there. Mainly Skype 4 refuses to ring my speakers with the default sound and took awhile to get World of Warcraft to use the speakers instead of the headphones for sound output. Other than issues like that, I am willing to make it my default OS now.

KURTZ 01-14-2009 02:05 PM

i think this should be the quickest OS that m$ has produced ...

fattony69 01-14-2009 02:06 PM

I have been using it, but some drivers won't install :/

You must have really old or really obscure hardware.

oh ok, i read somewhere that they are using xp kernel, i was looking for the link to that blog !...but the fact is ,its a hell of alot faster ...this i will spend money on..

Magnumutz 01-16-2009 08:34 AM

Yeah, this is the OS that i'm gonna have for my new PC.
Looks sleek, runs smooth, sounds great :)

RedeemedWarrior 01-16-2009 09:35 AM

I am on the Beta.. just not bothered to install yet :P

Caddyman 01-16-2009 10:32 AM

I like it so much on my desktop (Dell XPS 420), and vista is such a hog on my wifes laptop (Dell Inspiron 1521) i installed it on that last night...

lasto 01-16-2009 02:46 PM

i tried this today and must admit i was`nt over impressed.
Does look like vista with some addons.
Hard to find a decent free anti virus program - AVG wanted paying for windows 7 version
Not even sure about a firewall as i never looked.
Got some nice touches to it but and it found all my drivers - never had to install any of them which should`nt of been to hard, seeing as most of my stuff is pretty new.

Will retest it later on but at moment from a fresh format theres not much there after install so im back on my other drive (xp sp3)

Brandon Sheley 01-16-2009 02:48 PM

I tried it on my laptop and wasn't impressed :D

Yes sir. You can boot it up from a disc when you start up your PC.

thewolrab 01-18-2009 09:10 PM

I haven't tried it yet, but all I can say is I hope it's better on resources than Vista.

It seems to be. It idles at about 10% less RAM usage than Vista does. Both with nothing running but whatever Windows does by default.

GSeybold 01-20-2009 01:39 AM

Caddyman
Are you still liking it?

Gabby

Caddyman 01-20-2009 10:26 AM

Yes I am, other then they nixed movie maker from the package. I never really used it but it just so happened that a friend of ours had made a file in WMM and needed me to burn it to DVD and I could not install any verision of WMM in order to open and convert the presentation....it sucked!

RHWiRED 01-20-2009 10:38 AM

A family member actually works for MS :p - It's a recode of Vista, except actually thought through, and directed this time.
Trust me, it will be a much better operating system then Vista (lighter to I believe).

Thanks

Windows Live Messenger also got removed from the initial install.

You can get all those as one download. They also removed Windows Mail.

You can download, Windows Live Writer, Live Messenger (the new name for MSN messegnger), Live Mail, Windows Movie Make, Gallery and a couple others.

Wayne Luke 01-20-2009 05:49 PM

To download the Live Package go to: http://download.live.com/

It includes everything AWS mentions above.

... why don't you report the problems, instead of just sitting and ranting about it?

Calash 01-29-2009 12:12 AM

I am downloading it now.

iAnj 01-29-2009 12:11 PM

I have the 6800Betabuild ( i think) Which apparently from my friend is a glorified vista!
But i prefer the taskbar on it compared to the recent beta version, i don't partically like the big block sized new taskbar =(
I hope windowblinds is available for the OS if it doesn't work already.

Overall, i like the theme and the way it is completely customizable, but the problem is, microsoft are trying to make the OS's seem to....newby? When fiing IT problems e.g. network errors (limited or no connection) the settings for xp don't seem to appear in this new OS =/
