One of the local city councils has already put in a bid for a Space Shuttle. They will sell bonds to pay for it if the bid is approved by NASA. The city's population already approved the bond.

However the local cities where I live, have been very financially prudent for the last 20 years as the State of California likes to steal from city coffers to balance its budget. Therefore they set aside 10% of the annual budget in emergency reserve funds for city needs. Both cities have about $40 million in reserve funds. Also our primary employers (almost 80,000 jobs) are military or government employees. We have two Air Force facilities, a Naval facility and an Army base in the region. Add to this the fact that the area is where the Space Shuttle was designed, built and flight tested here that we need one for the local airpark. It was a central part of many family's livelihoods for about 2 decades since they started developing it in the 70s until it was slated for retirement in the late 90s. We used to have the Enterprise on display locally until it was moved to the Smithsonian Institute. |
Sounds like a smart town. ;)

It's a shame, To have the space shuttles heading to the hall of fame relics. I'm sure it's a government thing in who nasa can sell these too but it would have been better for the space shuttles to remain in active service. China have a great upcoming space program which I'm sure in the next ten years will rival Americas (maybe not) and personally would have been better for a country like that to purchase the space shuttles (with the 3 main engines intact) then the argument is they would need the accessories such as the land based vehicle to transfer it to the launch pad.
That said, It's a good thing nasa are selling off their engineering masterpieces, the more money the better. I find that the space program as stagnated for years with the missions to saturn (cassini) and the new horizons (pluto mission) which I personally think is a waste of time considering they can't slow down the new horizons probe and will only be in plutos vicinity for a short period. Anyway, vb.org space shuttle. yeah, that works. :) I can feel a photochop coming on. |
