O..m..g

Okay, this may sound crazy, but I want another forum, and cannot afford it. :D
So I am going to Self Code one!

I was always interested in coding my own forum. I was going to use a SMF base (I emailed them, they gave me full permission to edit it and re-release it, do whatever, as long as I kept a small "SMF" on the bottom of the board.)

I ended up dropping the project though :p

Just use phpBB or SMF or one of a hundred other free varieties out there. That is unless you are coding one for other reasons than to just run one site. If you just want to toss a site up then why reinvite the wheel?

nexialys 12-31-2008 05:31 PM

like Wayne say... but i tell you the real reason why you have to use phpBB or some other forum that have an impex for vBulletin.... when your budget can afford it, you will be able to buy another vB license and import that forum to a real software... ;)

... btw, good luck

iBardia 01-01-2009 03:21 AM

Thanks everyone. We just went with SMF.

Brandon Sheley 01-01-2009 03:49 AM

good luck, you might want to at least get your bbcode working in your sig here before coding a whole new forum

Working with Andrew Gallant for over a year on a bulletin board software there's just a crazy amount of work involved in creating your own bulletin board software. I hope you have a dedicated team with a lot of time and patience.

Personally, I don't think i could go through that again. But goodluck anyway, personally, I would save up the pennies and just buy a vbulletin license.

This is probably true, but it shouldn't be. Not if it's kept simple. You simply need user authentication/profiles(optional), and a hierarchy category system.

Obviously there's a bit more to it than that, but those are the core basics. Most instances of creating your own forum, you don't need the thousands of features that a stock commercial one comes with, and you just need tight integration with the rest of your site. In those instances, spending several hours creating your own solution would be way more valuable than shelling out ~$200 for a third party.

That would be a very expensive headache you just purchased.

I'm sorry for posting in this thread, but when am I going to be able to create a thread?
It's been days I've registered...
How long does it take for my privileges to be the same as everybody else?
