Vb.org Avatar Gallery
I was curious what the staffs stance in members submitting a range of avatars to the staff for vb.orgs avatar gallery? Obviously, if staff are welcoming this suggestion avatars would need to be reviewed first and then discussed whether or not the pack would be suitable for their gallery.
I'm not referring to the odd one avatar but a pack of themed avatars maybe 12 or so. Thoughts? |
Sorry but i don't get it. You want to submit avatar packs to a gallery? Which gallery? And why would they have to be moderated first?
They can already be submitted to vBulletin Avatar Sets. |
No marco, I was asking would staff welcome other avatars submitted to staff by members to be placed in their avatar gallery for other members to choose here. Thus far, members here can choose from the simpsons, futurama garfield catergory here. Would you welcome another themed pack to be submitted to you by members?
|
I see an avatar as a personal identification. Don't think predefined sets are the way to go. but feel free to share your vision on this.
|
I have a set of themed Monkey avatars. I was thinking a monkey holding a brush for designer. for coders maybe holding a cog etc and a range of monkey themed avatars expressing different emotions. Because they are all consistent in theme they could be placed in their own catergory.
Here's a preview of some (below) https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/external/2008/12/30.png https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/external/2008/12/31.png https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/external/2008/12/32.png These are monkeys holding a paintbrush only, though, I could easily alter them with other icons. Being .png and transparent they would look flawless with no redundant background on all of your styles here. They are 80x80 pixels so they are following the dimension rules allowed here both in size and in kb. As for pre-defined avatars, you have 5 or so catergorys of predefined avatars already. Anyway, I think they would work well here with some design alterations which I would be willing to undertake. |
Are you suggesting that if I have not chosen an avatar, I will be given a default avatar of a monkey as mine?

I can't see any problems in having some new avatars that can be chosen by users, but why should it stop at your avatars if that's the case. Why shouldn't I be able to design some and have them up there too? Whilst I think yours look cute, the argument against your suggestion would be that everyone should be able to submit them which means work for someone down the line :) |
And I agree with you 100%. Other users should have that privelage, why shouldn't they? I don't recall ever saying I should be the only one. Being the one to suggest it and having the design capabilities I stepped up with the suggestion.
If you read the first post in this thread I did ask about the staffs stance about members (not just shelley) about submitting avatars to staff. Glad i could help you no need to thank me. |
that would be cool :D
I Love those monkeys! |
At the moment we tend to not implementing this. We feel that it would be more limiting then that it would benefit our members.
If you want you can submit any avatar (set), assuming you have permission from the author. Members are free to use any of the submitted avatars, or an avatar found elsewhere. |
Limiting? How can me sending you a pack of avatars for the avatar gallery limit anyone? They get to choose from another defined set, if anything, it's giving the members more choice not li miting them in anyway. I'm not asking that members should have the priveleages to submit pre-defined avatars resulting in sets (partial sets being submitted) I'm asking if it's okay o if staff like a particular set they could view the set and then decide if they want to add it to their already range of avatars that members can choose from. Anyway, I'm quite sure we are still not on the same wave length marco.
|
It'd never work. Some people would get annoyed because the mods didn't think their avatars weren't good enough etc.
|
Yeah, I guess that's one way of looking at it. Not me though, I just have to disagree with you just for the hell of it and because i just can.
As always, Feel free to close this thread by thread creators request. |
I did this on my site. I have a thread in our Site Suggestions forum and stated the requirement size for the avatars and told users I would upload them for the masses to use if they posted them. It's a music themed site, so we now have tons of avatars for different bands. I think I ended up uploading over 200 avatars in the first 2 days that people were posting their wants.
|
Yeah, I requested for the thread to be closed Lynne I guess i just didn't put it bluntly enough. I fail to see what you did on another site and what I suggested here has any relevance apart from what I'm getting across from you that it would be too much effort because of the vast amount of avatars you had to upload. Nothing against you, I just didn't really want to hear it as much as you didn't really want to hear me going on about you uploading 200 avatars in as many days.
Anyway, Thread closed by thread starters request thankyou. |
Threads on vB.org are not closed on request, unless there is a special reason.
|
If a suggestion has not been welcomed and/or it will never be entertained or implemented there is no need to leave a thread opened for further discussion.
That alone is a very good reason. Another reason, why risk it being bumped at a later date when the decision has been made not to welcome the suggestion. That's another reason. Both very good valid reasons for you marco. |

I was actually agreeing with you that this is a fun thing to do. As for closing the thread, Marco addressed that issue all ready. |
Politics aside... Shelly, the monkeys are cute. :) Have any with a keyboard for us 'code monkeys' instead of a paintbrush?

I gave a good explanation on why this would be a good additon, infact, all my suggestions are good but here we are now debating about mis-read posts and that you thought it was just a good idea which you never actually said that it was a good idea. It was just a thought and last time I checked I can't read minds but I can read clear cut text. That's enough for me, the thread is going nowhere and see no sense in pursuing this any further with the suggestion not being entertained or even discussed with the rest of the staff. |

You might want to look at king Kovifer last statement in the link i provided, Closed thread on authors request marco. Judging by your last response to me stateing you don't close threads without special reasons. I'm not saying I'm special but there is another good reason which makes...3 now. |
Shelley you're clearly being difficult now. It's getting old.
|
Being realistic Dean. Without the need in wasting anyones time (which mine was creating this thread) and writing out that long winded explanation shouldn't be mistaken for being difficult. We both know how this suggestion will pan out. We'll see and I can then say "I told you so". There's nothing difficult about bettering this place without being classed as trolling, being difficult or otherwise.
|
If the desired answer isn't given, it is not a reason enough to close a thread. Best not to speculate why or why not threads are closed; if a thread shouldn't have been closed members can contact the Admins to resolve it. So lets move on from that.
Back to the topic at hand... I would tend to agree with Marco's statement: Quote:
Just a thought... :) |
It should be noted that the only reason the pre-defined avatars exist here is due to the merger with vBt. The avatars were brought over to avoid breaking old vBt accounts.
I'm not going to chime in on the suggestion because I use custom avatars anyway. :) |
ooh, I like your new avatar.
anyway, back on topic. ooohh I really like your new avatar brad. Edit: That explains the reason why the current pre-defined avatars are there in the first place. |
First time I'd ever seen the pre-defined avatars on here. Are we allowed use them as predefined avatars on our sites or did the copyright owners just waive their copyright for vb.org?
It would be a nice gesture to maybe use some original ones in there. Build bridges not barricades. |

As far as adding new avatars submitted by the user base; I'm not against the idea but I can see how it can create a problem for the people that run this site. Sure if you just have a hand full of users submitting avatars it's no big deal..but what about 10, 20, 30, 40? Will these designers have requests like having their name in the footer of this site? Are the willing to hand the copyright of the images over to Jelsoft? It opens a can of worms that someone is going to have to take the time to manage. So it's easier to just not accept any work rather than managing all the submissions that may or may not come in. Would I run my own ship with such a mindset? Probably not...but then again I don't have a million+ users to support. |
fair point - and I can imagine not all the sets would be up to Shelley's standard and refusal could cause offence.
|
Only on vb.org can a friendly thread about wanting to submit a few avatars to the standard gallery turn into a 3-page bicker fest.
Good idea Shelley, but I can't say I'm suprised to see things go the way they did considering the initial response you got to such a simple suggestion. This forum should just be renamed to "Have the staff say No". |
Instead of trying to stir up confrontation, lets stay on topic. Thank you

Well, I think it is a good idea and if Shelly doesn't mind. I'll use the avatar myself.

Nice avatar ;)
