Display Unread Posts and New Reputation Comments

As of 24 Nov 2017 this modification has been withdrawn.

Note: The unread posts portion of this hack only works if you use the database thread marking system, also, this attaches itself to certain phrases in the "welcome" box and will not work if they are not present (or are modified by other code).

FYI, the Forum Marking Choices are located in vBulletin Options ;
vBulletin Options > General Settings > Thread/Forum Read Marking Type

The Read Marking options were removed from vB 3.8.11, it defaults to database marking.

** For vBulletin 3.8.11 you will need to use the Unread-posts-3811.zip **

This displays the actual number of posts that are still considered unread by you (and will show up in a 'getnew' search). It also displays the number of new reputation comments since you last checked your usercp.

There is the option to count the unread posts since your last visit, or all posts considered unread. This setting reflects the divider in the 'getnew' search display. There is also the option to disable the unread posts display or the new reputation comments display.

There is also the option to display the New Reputation Comments counter as a Welcome Box Notification.

All settings are located in vBulletin Options > Display Unread Posts and Reputation.

Version 3.8.001 adds support for forums excluded if you have the "Get New/Get Daily Opt Out Modification" installed (by Andreas).
Version 3.8.004 adds support for forums excluded if you have the "Selective Forum Filter Modification" installed (by Psionic Vision).

To install this hack unzip the xml file and import it using the ACP Product Manager.

History:

v3.8.001 : Initial vb 3.8 Release.
v3.8.002 : Fix forum exclusion bugs.
v3.8.003 : Fix spelling and phrase bug.
v3.8.004 : Added support for Psionic Visions Selective Forum Filter.

Does this show total unread post or unread posts since your last visit?

Paul M 12-24-2008 08:03 AM

Either.

ScienceOfMuscle 01-04-2009 03:37 AM

Thanks for the update Paul... quick question though. I suspect the "Unread Posts" link uses a relative link, and not a fully qualified link. And on my vbAdvanced page it links to http://scienceofmuscle.com/search.php?do=getnew and not http://scienceofmuscle.com/forum/search.php?do=getnew

Is there a place I can change this?

Paul M 01-04-2009 03:35 PM

Update the appropriate setting in the mods options.

Deimos 01-15-2009 02:25 PM

Quick question for ya Paul
I have this set to display on every page (in the navbar area)
Is this a bad idea? I was wondering what impact this would have on server performance if it's displayed one every page. (I assume it runs a query for EVERY page visited?)

Paul M 01-15-2009 04:45 PM

Are you sure you have posted in the correct thread ? - this mod runs on every page by default, there is no option to prevent it (as it wouldnt make sense).

Deimos 01-15-2009 05:19 PM

Oh! My bad
I was under the impression it only showed on the main page, heh

Sorry about that :P

Hello just gettin started on a forum, I'm a newbie, not sure what you mean by this any info would be helpful?

Paul M 01-17-2009 10:39 AM

The database thread marking system is a setting in vbulletin options.

Unless you have modified your navbar template, you dont need to worry about the rest.

music legend 01-18-2009 03:05 PM

does this run an extra query each time the page is loaded?

Paul M 01-18-2009 05:22 PM

Yep, sure does.

thedudleys 01-21-2009 04:32 PM

isn't this the same one that Webtalkforums' uses?

CPOWA 01-23-2009 12:29 AM

Installed. Thanks for the update, Paul :)

Where exactly was unread posts was supposed to be displayed ? I've checked usercp and could see no difference at all and I did have unread posts the moment I checked that.

Any tips ?

tei727 01-26-2009 01:36 PM

Thank you paul!
One issue I'm having. I see the notification and when I click the Your Notifications Dropdown I see the number but the text is blank in the dropdown.

Blue91 01-26-2009 03:49 PM

Can someone give a screenshot of this in action?

Thanks.

Nevermind. It just started showing up..lol

jazde86 01-31-2009 02:08 PM

Hmm, if I disable the Display New Reputation Comments option it still shows up in the navbar. :( This option and the variable $unread did not work anymore on my vBa Portal with the 3.8 Version.

ericgtr 02-01-2009 05:34 PM

Installed. Thanks Paul.

profanitytalker 02-14-2009 08:54 PM

Hey Paul, this is a great hack. I use it on my forums. Anyways, do you know what I need to put if I modified my welcome block? What script do I need?

Paul M 02-14-2009 09:36 PM

Dont really understand the question.

2L8 02-15-2009 06:27 PM

works good ,installed!thx

hambil 02-16-2009 07:30 AM

Hey Paul, I use this along with Get New/Get Daily Opt Out Modification and the numbers don't match. It's most obvious when this tells me I have one new post, and click on the link takes me to the new post page which says there are no new posts.

Not sure what the deal is - I will look into it - but wanted to let you know it does not appear to integrate properly with Get New/Get Daily Opt Out Modification as stands.

MrBig 02-16-2009 08:57 AM

can a brotha get a screen cap?

paintballer.ie 02-16-2009 10:48 PM

Hey Paul, great mod.

Would it be possible to code a version that only displays the number on unread posts in brackets beside the 'new post' link in the nav bar.

e.g. .....Community.......Calendar...........''New Posts (10)'' ............Search

Thanks

Um, but, your mod info says "Version 3.8.001 adds support for forums excluded if you have the "Get New/Get Daily Opt Out Modification" installed (by Andreas)." And that's the mod I'm talking about.

Paul M 02-17-2009 04:24 PM

Yes, I know what it is, but I dont use that mod myself, therefore I dont have it installed.

Paul M 02-17-2009 06:05 PM

Yep, neither the opt out exclusions or the internal modifications exclusions were working correctly. Should be fixed in 3.8.002

hambil 02-17-2009 06:07 PM

Thanks Paul - fantastic work as always :)

Adavis 02-17-2009 06:20 PM

I am a VB newbie. How do I upgrafe to 3.8.002? Just few days using VB and this mod too...

Paul M 02-17-2009 06:25 PM

Just repeat what to did to install it, making sure you tick the overwrite option.

Adavis 02-17-2009 06:44 PM

I did it. When i hit the link for the new post I get that:

http://www.michanikos.gr/search.php?do=getnew[ARG:4%20UNDEFINED]

What is [ARG:4%20UNDEFINED]?

Paul M 02-17-2009 06:49 PM

I would guess you have translated one of the phrases - four phrases have been changed so you will need to revert/re-translate them.

I've got the same here, I saw this is related to some phrases that were updated but I'm still trying to seek the differences between old and new ones.

Paul M 02-18-2009 11:18 AM

The error gives a clue as to the difference - argument 4 has been removed.

The phrase this applys to for most people is "dup_posts".

Leo Brazil 02-18-2009 11:41 AM

You're are right Paul, "dub_posts" is exactly the phrase related to this error.

I think I know what the problem is but I will make some tests and let people here know what I can get.
