Designing a Business Directory to integrate with VB

Since I haven't see any Business Directories out there that integrate with Vb I decided to go ahead and design my own hack. Initially I was basing it on the vba links data model however altering it a bit. Another thing is I'm not sure what the best way would be to design the admincp screens for managing the settings, categories, links, etc. I'm also thinking of adding Googles map displaying ability. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Jim

Just to let everyone know I am working on a business directory mod in my spare time. At this point I'm planning for something simple at least to get something started that can be built on. I hope to have something to show by end of July 2009, but I'll keep everyone posted on a monthly basis as to where things are at.

If you have any suggestions on features, please add them to this thread.

I very much like the sound of this. I have several sites that I can see this benefiting.

Suggested features:
- Ability to create multi level Categories
- Rating system so users can rate individual companies
- Search on name, type and rating
- Goggle map integration with ability to show search results from a given location
- Some way of post a thread in reference to a particular company. I think it would be too much to give each company their own sub form but the ability for users to post multiple threads about a given company and these threads to be easily linked to the company would be good.

If you can achieve most of those features that will be one hell of a mod!

Hi Paul, Thanks for commenting. Yes, I am still working on this in my spare time and I do have plans for most of the features you mentioned up through the Google Map integration.
I'm planning on having it fully phrased as well. The "commenting" system would definitely be interesting to look into.
I have roughly 10+ years of web programming experience, however this is project will be my first vb mod and a learning experience. I'm very excited to put this together and I'm looking forward to sharing it with everyone.

I would also be interested in this, I'd like to see the option for forum members to be able to submit a free basic listing but with an option to upgrade to paid listing which would appear above free listings on the result and also allow them to upload more info and maybe a company logo. This could use the vbulletin paid membership feature.

Good luck and I look forward to seeing your hard work.

Chris.

My deepest apologies guys. With the release of vb4 and critical life issues going on on my end I've had to put this project on the back burner. I may pick this back up later but I can't promise anything. I'm very sorry.
