vBulletin Tonight!!

Hi everyone, I am getting vB in two weeks (November 7th), and I wanted to know a few things and tell you a few things.

One, can one licence be hooked up to two vB.org accounts? If not, please tell me.

Here is what is on my shopping list that day:
vBulletin Owned
DreamHost -- It was recommened to me, but if you have a suggestion, please post. A host with more space for a small price might also work... but I might stick with Dreamhost till the site gets bigger.

Also, if you have anything you want to tell me or anything please tell me.

I am curious of how to get the smilies to display on the bottom of the "Advanced Posting" options (the bigger box), but I will have to wait till the 7th. :D

I can't wait for vBulletin, my birthday is on the 11th and I have been waiting since June when I heard of it, because my parents won't buy it before the 7th. I am getting it on the 7th because I need time to hook it up. Anyway, you will see me on and posting more when I can post in other sections except this.

I have one final question -- How long does it take to get your licence set up to vB.org and .com?

nexialys 10-28-2008 09:54 PM

1- you can hook your license to 3 accounts on vb.org actually... http://members.vbulletin.com/membersupport_priority.php

2- we can not suggest hosts, but please consider making a search about the recommended one, it does not have good reputation with vBulletin... here: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=11

3- the smilies in the bottom of the Editor box is a hack provided on this site... free
4- there is a tab on top of this page, called "Articles".. good place where to learn!

Guys, really, I can't thank you enough! I will search about my host

Can you please tell me the main problems with Dreamhost? I can't really understand them.

nexialys 10-28-2008 10:11 PM

these are technical problems, bad management with clients, forcing to buy bigger packages to avoid problems that do not exists... a lot of small hosts with low priced packages are doing this...

take the time to find a solid host, even if it cost you a little more... 10$/m is not bad, forget about the 10$ per year with a free domain name...

we can not go with more details, you have to do the search on your own, it always depend on your own budget, tastes, kinds etc...

Lightey 10-28-2008 10:15 PM

I know a site that runs it, and the site is fine..

Anyway, I asked the owner of another site what host they use

Would Host Monster be a good one? Do they have problems?

nexialys 10-28-2008 10:29 PM

as i said, we can not do the work for you... but you can ask here: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ i think it's the best place where to have answers about hosts...

Lightey 10-28-2008 10:31 PM

Okay, thank you!

Congratulations on becoming a part of the family!

SEOvB 10-29-2008 01:32 AM

Seriously take the advice and dont use Dreamhost for vBulletin, dont pay $3 a month for host, find something reputable and reliable!

DarkGizmo 10-29-2008 01:51 AM

My suggestion: Godaddy, haven't had any significant problems with em. :)

How quickly you get the license info depends on the payment method you use.

The quickest is with PayPal using the funds in your PayPal account. This should take just a few minutes unless the payment was an eCheck payment, in which case it usually takes 3-5 business days to clear.

The Metacharge credit card option also just takes a few minutes.

The Worldpay credit card option can take up to 24 hours to be verified.

Wire Transfers can take up to 4-6 business days.

And finally checks can take as long as necessary for the check to reach us, be deposited and clear our bank.

Another question. I read the vBulletin manuel a lot (my dad doesn't get much about vB), and it says that in the Member's Area you have to download vB. Now, there is my question, would you HAVE to download the NEWEST version? Because 3.8 doesn't have a lot of MODS or anything for it yet, and I don't want a beta on a new forum incase it crashes..

Carnage 10-29-2008 10:13 AM

i recall seeing a blog post in vbulletin.com that mentioned a few useful things to consider in a host. One interesting piece of advice was to pick a host that dosn't require too much payment/contract term up front - that way if they suck you can move easilly without loosing months of paid hosting.

You answer your own question actually... download the latest STABLE version, as indicated in the Download area once you're licensed... anyway this is the first version you will be able to see, so there is no chance to miss your try.

Also, the versions 3.8 of all mods will be easy to find once 3.8 is released, because the coders are waiting for the official announcement before updating their work, but they do it very quickly once released... a day or two and you find 300 to 500 more mods in that section...

Marco van Herwaarden 10-29-2008 10:54 AM

If you want you can still download all available versions once you have purchased a license.

PS Most 3.6/3.7 modifications will also work on 3.8.

CodingMonkey 10-29-2008 11:02 AM

You can download any version from somewhere around 2.3.11 I believe. (meaning you can download 3.0.x, 3.5.x, 3.6.x, 3.7.x, 3.8 beta 1)

Lightey 10-29-2008 06:00 PM

Thank you everyone!

People hate on Dreamhost a lot, and I think a lot of it is undeserved. I use DreamHost for my vB site and I've never had an issue with it. But here's the thing about DH: its awesome for smaller sites; if you try to run something where you have thousands of users, DH probably isn't for you. Its perfect otherwise though, and I have nothing but positive things to say about them.

Marco van Herwaarden 10-30-2008 07:15 AM

Please do not turn this into a hosting service advertisment thread. If hosting suggestions are needed, please post in the forums on vB.com.

I didn't know it was not allowed until someone told me on the first page, and then people kept posting.. Sorry

Hey Nexia,

when I get vB, I will PM you 100 times with questions. Like one, how do you add things to your Nav-bar. You will get questions like that!

--------------- Added [DATE]1225713331[/DATE] at [TIME]1225713331[/TIME] ---------------

One question, Owned means you can run vB forever without paying for anything but upgrades and hosting. Am I correct?

I need my site up in 4 days after Friday, so [S]I[/S] will pay with Paypal (sorry, my PARENTS will. I am not paying, it is my bday present. xD)

nexialys 11-03-2008 10:13 AM

Hi, if you PM me for support, you will be invited in my ignore list... because i did not tell you to do so.

btw, for other questions regarding your license, https://www.vbulletin.com/order/ ... read the description of each solutions... it is very precise.

merk_aus 11-03-2008 10:14 AM

Yes Owned means u can continue to run the system, you just need to purchase continued support if you decide to.

If you need help to install vb on your host, and modifications/styles installed pm me and let me know.

Lightey 11-03-2008 10:15 AM

I was kidding Nexia!

We already have an Admin who has vBulletin, so he knows what to do.

Any luck and still using dreamhost? I am currently also using Dreamhost as they seem to give a good package (unlimited bw/space for 10 a month). But I'm having quite a few issues setting up vbulletin properly.. It's unable to find the sql.

This is the same person (my other account wouldn't load my licence, so you can delete that one)

And, I am not using Dreamhost, I went with HostMonster
