Anyone else getting an increase in spam?

It looks like bots, it sounds like bots, but there are no links!

Its well strange, getting around 5 a week, signing up with mad email addresses and making 1 post, and thats it.

I must admit, 1 of them was quite clever, and it said has anyone seen 'something'

So I did a google search for that word, and then clicked on the top link, and it took me too some software site.

But I just dunno how they are slipping through, and I can't ban them, as some seem like genuine posts, as they are asking for help, or saying hello and complimenting the forum!!

Catch 22

Anyone else getting posts like this?

Can you help to me!?

P.S. Anybody know about XRumer 5.0 software? Need a link to it...
The above was gthe software one, which when I done a search I did find it on other forums, but others are quite difficult to spot.

Been going on about two weeks. Check this out. https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=183917

I've had a huge influx in what I think is human-powered spam. I.e. I'm fairly certain it's a human registering and posting and spamming. We're talking around 2-3 a day.

Rapscallion 10-16-2008 06:48 AM

Used to get this when I ran phpBB. A bot would sign up and ask for help with something. A few days later, another bot would answer it with a link that was actually advertising.

Its actually really clever how they do it.

Cheers noppid, but I was sure I already installed that. Will have another look

We did recently, but we added a hack here on .org to prevent bot registration, it's worked so far.

It's nice to know the vBulletin.org/.com staff actually helped people by posting that announcement (which is something I did not actually expect from the company). But in all, I haven't had that much spam recently, and I can probably count the spam members I've had to ban per week on one hand.

Shazz 10-16-2008 03:49 PM

I had this spam a few weeks ago, there getting better.

River_rush 10-17-2008 05:42 PM

I did on two of my forums I co admin on, then I installed a few of the spambot stop mods the best one of which is the VBstopforumspam mod which imho has been invaluable!
it has stopped 99% dead in their tracks.

brad_irc 10-18-2008 08:39 PM

The latest version of some forum spam tools came out (won't list name, otherwise more might be keen to it)

My site got listed in their default spam list.......

Shazz 10-18-2008 09:09 PM

There getting good, some of them act like real members in there first few posts.

Use to have enormous amounts of spam and fake accounts from the Chicoms durring the Olympics, but it slowed down after their staged event was over.

SA, RU, HU are also a problem
- I just banned the countries net range for 3 month periods untill I am forgotten.

UKBusinessLive 10-19-2008 04:49 PM

Every day i get between 4 or 5 of these....

Dear Beloved,

I am Mrs. Sarah Grant, the wife of Late Mr.Robert Grant, my husband worked
with the Chevron/Texaco in Russia before he died in the year 2003. We were
married for years without a child. Before his death we both got born-again
as dedicated Christians. When my late husband was alive he deposited the
sum of 7.5 Million Pounds with a Bank in Europe.

Presently, I'm in an hospital in Russia undergoing treatment for
esophageal cancer. I have since lost my ability to talk and my doctors
have told me that I have only a few weeks to live. Please help me
Stand-in as the beneficiary and collect the Funds from the Bank to finance
Charity Organisations. Please my beloved for further communication, reach

me on my private email address: ************ (removed)

Remain Blessed

Mrs. Sarah Grant

Do these people think we're stupid, and of course the woman has no friends in russia and her husband banked all the money before he died

The poor woman is dying and wants a total stranger to collect the 7.5 million pounds.....

I have just one thing to say to these spammers...

Have you not heard of the credit crunch, the Bank has gone bust :D:D

PEPITO69 10-19-2008 06:13 PM

I had a problem very similar that I managed to stop by changing the sign process up from a Captha to a question system - after reading previous advice from mods here that Ken/Santai gave me the links to.

(Thanks Ken GFXStyles for the heads up)

Apologies but I do not have the links as email containing/leading to the advice I already deleted
