not a request - an inquiry: does the old forum favourites hack exist for 2.0? just wondering if im about to waste my time :D

if it does, might i trouble someone for a link/copy?

Wayne Luke 06-05-2001 02:23 PM

No it doesn't exist for 2.0.

Gryphon 06-06-2001 10:44 PM

Can't wait Rat :D

Should be part of v2.1

being the impatient guy i am, i took it upon myself to code something up. since (no offense to the vb guys) the forum subscription stuff is basically useless (nobody uses them at least on the tw forums), i decided to set up the index page so if someone has any set up it just shows the subscribed forums all on one page, regardless of categories, etc.

this presented me with a problem however, if someone were to mark a forum as a favourite - that would then be the only forum listed on their index and they would need to use the 'jump to' dropdown to mark others. thats not very user friendly, so i started thinking about other ways to go.

one way would be having a 'show only subscribed forums on main page' toggle in the users options.

another would be to have a forum favourites selection page where someone would check off the forums they wanted and submit to choose their favs (or none to get the normal view).

both would probably work alright, and im leaning towards the latter - but i'm not a exactly a god of userfriendlyness and i thought i'd see if anyone had a suggestion for another option, or a recommendation or anything.

personally i like the idea of a toggle on index.php to show either the "default" setting or only the subscribed forums. Then a query to index.php like index.php?show=subscribed would then just show the subscribed forums. Clearly, to add more subscribed forums you would have to show all to add them. For me a checkbox system would not work as i have too many forums to list them all.

That brings up an interesting point, Chris - how to handle having a very large number of forums. Here's my thoughts on it - two different ideas:
1) Do it similar to how the templates are currently listed in the Admin CP - in groups that can be expanded one by one. You set your prefs group by group, hitting submit each time. Although now that I think about it this wouldn't work too well.
2) Page one is a list of categories. Click on a category, you get a list of forums in that category. Check off the forums you want, hit submit, you get taken back to the list of categories. Sub-categories (and subsequent sub-forums) could be handled one of two ways:
  • List them, indented (with sub-sub-categories being indented twice as far, etc.) on the main category list page, or
  • List them on the appropriate forum selection page (e.g. category "a" has a subcategory "b", so list it when you click on category "a", but don't list it when you click on category "c"), in a separate box (so it's clear what they are) and clicking on one submits your choices of forums *and* takes you to a list of forums in that subcategory. Sub-subcategories would then be listed on this page, and so on.
Personally, I like the second idea better, and I like the second way of listing sub-categories better.

Just some food for thought. :)

i would agree with you, although just to complicate the matter, two of my "categories" on my front page are in fact forums that just look like categories (well in fact they all look like forums but...).

Dang I haven't been to your site in a while Chris - looking really good! :) You've obviously redesigned it since I was last there.

As for what you mentioned it shouldn't be a problem. The script would pick up on any categories and mark them as such to the user, at least that's what I was thinking.

chrispadfield 06-11-2001 12:05 AM

thank you :) i have turned of the php ads rotating images which actually make it look a bit better but me and my server are not getting on very well at the moment, i think it knows i am going to dump it and making it as hard as possible for an easy break up. oh well :)

and sounds cool on the script. This is something i know would be popular on my site, i would definitely use it.

Although i tell you what would be very cool would be a way to select forums you want on your "homepage" but also be able to group these into your own categories. that would be awesome :)

Grouping them your own way would be awesome! :)

The only issue I could see with that is implimenting a way to allow them to see new forums as their added or even e-mail them asking if they want to have them on their list.

All of the non-visibile forums could be listed under a separate category called "Other Forums" or something to that extent
