Custom Search (Google)

OK -- I'm thinking of buying a site very similar to Blackle, but wanted to ask these questions:

- Is it possible to use other ad networks on the same page as google search, since that's what the main page will be?

I had someone say this:

Having the search bar as the main focus of your page is against Google's TOS. They'll shut you down eventually. I like your domain name though. I just think you should do something else with the site concept.
Is that true? If it is, then why is Blackle allowed?

That's all -- thanks!

Interesting...

Informative response -- really helped.

Read the google TOS for using search and adsense sponsored results and find the answer. Everything is pretty plain and simple there.

Yes its possible to use other ad networks on the same page.

Why would you buy a site that is simple, blackbackground and just a google search box? Why not start whitele and make it white? Or redle, or I'd presonally like to see a maroonle!

It has a blog, too. :p

I'll have a good read tomorrow.

Reason for black: http://ecoiron.blogspot.com/2007/01/...megawatts.html.

I'm not sure yet -- I could change it a little if I gain ownership.

That's actually pretty clever.

Jase2 10-10-2008 04:04 PM

Yup! Should have ownership of the site pretty soon -- I'll post a link once I do.

I must admit, I like the black interface and will probably use it to perform my searches from :D

Jase2 10-10-2008 04:09 PM

That's good to hear. :) Trying to get many people to have it as their homepage -- so every time you open your browser, you save a few watts. Every little helps, so they say...

It's got a blog with it -- not sure whether it would be appropriate to open a forum for suggestions and discussion? What do you think?

SEOvB 10-10-2008 06:10 PM

Not sure a forum would go well with it honestly.

You could always bust out the free software solution for it to test the waters and if it proves useful upgrade it

Or you could send everyone to my forums :D

I looked into this for my company. Our IT department seriously looked at changing everyone's homepage to Blackle. I did some tests, and the results were slightly different (not a huge problem). The main problem is that it only really saved money on CRTs. LCD monitors are backlit all the time, and that's the main power drain. It costs no less to display black than to display another colour.

We reckoned it would be greenwash with even less substance than usual, but the main workforce would be upset to see a different browser window there.

There is a significant difference in energy consumption between black and white screens for CRT monitors. CCFL backlit LCD screens are less affected by color because of their constant backlight. However, new monitor technologies such as LED backlit LCDs screens, Plasma screens and OLED screens do not have a constant backlight so we will see larger energy savings with Spoogled as these new monitors replace the old CCFL LCDs. While technology is constantly changing the need to take steps to save energy (even small amounts of energy) is constant.

iogames;

Just go into your adsense account and setup a custom search... Then buy a domain name and add it to the page of the site you create.... I've setup three sites search only official military content, if done correctly they are very successful...

Blackle, is original... That's great if someone wants to copy the concept and try to gain something from thier idea... but why not come up with you own "original" idea. ;) (example: why not come up with a name and use a certain color for the search site, or a theme like sports...)

Thanks Sir :)
