Running a gaming forum is dangerous?

<a href="http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/newsheadlines/article-23560540-details/Man+in+court+over+gamer%27s+murder/article.do" target="_blank">http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/newshe...der/article.do</a>

It is suspected that a german man killed the administrator of a Gaming Forum after an online dispute.

legionofangels 09-26-2008 01:13 PM

Anyone can kill anyone, no forum owner is safe unless they don't know where you live.

* loves proxies *

Never give out your location on your forum, how could he have known where to find him without hacking him or Pyke saying "hey I live here". I have met people from online before but I never tell people my address.

Sad and scary, it's just a forum, and in his case it's just a damn game. It should never be the cause of a death. Ridiculous.

This is just plain life... internet, newspapers, anything... when you have the addy of someone, you can spy, kill, violate, anything...

Let me reiterate that I've met people and I did not kill, spy, or attack them. But I have done "other" things with them. * not going to go into detail on that * lol

nexialys 09-26-2008 02:02 PM

we can, we can... you've done some prayers and lightened up some candles... !!!

Talking about bad Moderators & Users Uh?

Isaac Asimov said that we killed each other for the most stupid reasons

Running any site is dangerous.

Then vB.org Moderators must be one of the toughness & dangerous jobs in the world... with all those: 'gimme, gimme, gimme... I paid my license' :D

p.s. Don't forget the classic: 'They don't run this place as I want...'

I have these guys standing in front of my house nowadays: :D

nexialys 09-26-2008 03:51 PM

i would avoid having UN forces in front of my house though... not even able to protect themselves...

towermatt 09-26-2008 04:57 PM

I posted my address on my site and welcomed all comers.

I have a big, vicious dog though.

RiSiCO 09-26-2008 09:28 PM

Something like that happened to me, but I'm still alive :P

I banned a guy from one of my local forums (pretty active user, about 4k posts) but I didn't know that he was from the same city as me and in the same university ;D, he founded me and it was about to get ugly ...

But after all, everything ended good ...

I can attest to this - I run a gaming site and I was stalked to my house. Not as bad as the OP's story, but still could have turned nasty. I blogged my story on my site:

http://www.mymmogames.net/blogs/2008...rnet-stalking/

It still isn't solved but it's been almost 2 weeks without incident.

Now, that is insane.

I will bet that there are a lot of stories like that, when you ask forum owners. A compilation would make a epic thread. Or a good book.

Well my offices are in Las Vegas and I live in Los Angeles ;)

So they can stalk me from 9am - 5pm PST :D

p.s. Tip to get rid of stalkers: Ask them for a loan and they will disappear! ;)

Hmm...that's not a bad idea. Maybe I'll get stories from Forum Owners and actually make a webpage or something dedicated to it.

Shazz 09-28-2008 03:48 AM

Every owner of a game forum, make sure your members are happy! :D

gamerfu 09-28-2008 05:46 AM

PO BOX is the best way to go and do not sign-up for a PO BOX that is in your city. Get a PO BOX in a major city and have it forwarded to another address that is not even your home. :D *hehee*

Loget 09-28-2008 07:37 AM

He should of banned the fool

dxlwebs 09-28-2008 09:30 AM

i think that owning a gaming site does have its downsides (like this) but the way you work around it is by being nice to everyone and making your mods do the nasty stuff LOL that way your always the nice guy with the evil mods :D

That would just stop him from doing it

Rapscallion 09-29-2008 06:15 PM

Worst I've ever experienced was an aggrieved forumer I had to ban threaten to write me a letter to my home address because I wasn't replying to his emails.

As I said to my mods, I hoped he used his best crayons.
