is there a garage other than vbgarage?

We're seriously considering buying VBulletin and converting our forum over from SMF using impex. However, there's only one thing preventing us from doing so and we're hoping you all can provide solution information.

We are aware that vbgarage is available. However, this just really isn't a garage as garage's are known on forums. It's really nothing more than a gallery, which we will already have using photopost. We're looking for something that can allow our users to submit as many pics as we allow in the admincp as well adding modifications from different categories that they have added to their machine.

The garage on our ATV site is very popular, although it's not very well supported by the designer. It's called smfgarage and it does what we need it to do, just not in the best way it could be done.

However, this is a deal maker or breaker on our purchase as our members would be very upset to see these feature be lost by going to another forum software.

I found thumpertalk.com, which is a motorcycle site, runs VB 3.6 and has a perfect garage. However, I can't get anyone from there to respond to my question as to what garage they're running.

I saw this thread where e1320 apparently was working on one but no updates have been posted in a week or so.

Does anyone have an idea of if there's an add-on out there that can do what we're looking for and if so, what it's called?

Thanks!

seanm07 08-05-2008 03:28 PM

It looks like they made their own

vile2006 08-05-2008 03:38 PM

I don't know. It's similar to phpbbgarage and smf garage so I was wondering if somehow there was a hack out there to port either of the 2 into VB.

From searching the forums for days, it seems this is a highly desired mod. I can't understand it not being available. Yes I know, it requires a lot of time to build but there are tons of posts from people wanting it, not just here, but on other webmaster forums as well.

It's the one thing that our members requested for quite a awhile and we finally installed it on SMF. There's no chance at this point as popular as it is, that we can swap over and make them lose it.

Of course I would post over in the other thread I linked to see if I could get an update frm e1320.com but without owning a license yet, I can't post and I'm not gonna buy a license until I get the issue resolved. Kind of a catch22 situation.

Snkypete 08-08-2008 02:02 PM

That is definitely a port from Fusion Scripts.. phpbbgarage and smf garage are made from FusionScripts. The owner of FS has the code out there available to all, but there is nothing to port the information over. That is what is needed - and no one seems to be able to or willing to do.

I've contacted e1320.com - I even added a car in his garage to help, he hasn't replied.

I've attempted to hire people, contacted FordForums and DodgeTalk, just attempted to contact ThumperTalk but the admin has PMs turned off (they don't have 1/4mi and dyno number columns though since it's a bike board).....

It's all very frustrating.

diettalk 08-09-2008 07:36 PM

It's now called vbPicGallery

Snkypete 08-10-2008 09:18 PM

vPicGallery is not a garage. It is a picture gallery (as the name implies).

Just because the coder wants you to think it's a garage doesn't mean it is.

Blackheart_72 08-11-2008 09:01 AM

We are using vbpicgallery as a garages system at the moment and it does the job fine until something more suited comes out.

Snkypete 08-11-2008 10:48 AM

That is your opinion and you are entitled to is - as I am entitled to mine that it is not a garage module.

vile2006 08-11-2008 04:21 PM

I can't understand how a forum that is so popular doesn't have an add-on or hack out there for a module that is so popular.

Very frustrating!

What are the intrinsic differences between a garage and a typical gallery? What features are need to truly classify something as a "garage"?

With a real garage the images are just one little piece, the one I built has area's to add modification data, dyno run data, track lap times, 1/4 mile times, etc.

vile2006 08-11-2008 05:15 PM

A real garage also has selction boxes for adding modifications. There is a category type (ie, suspension, engine, protection, etc.) then manufacturers under that, and then another selection menu to choose a specific item. Once the item is chosen, you can enter purchase price, installation price, product rating, etc.

Digital Jedi 08-11-2008 09:13 PM

So, more simply put, your looking for a dynamic gallery? Because that sounds like it could have multiple uses beyond just a garage. I'll have to look into that more, because it sounds like what your looking for is something I'm looking for as well. Something with extremely manageable dynamic content.

vile2006 08-11-2008 10:09 PM

Go here and look at the smfgarage to get an idea. That link shows you the home page of that quad. You can then click the modifications tab for a break down of the mods done to it. This is the home page for the garage.

That should give you a better understanding.

If you are talking to me then i never stated in my post that it was a garage module, i simply said that i use it for my garages.

Read it properly please before jumping the gun next time.

I didn't jump any gun -
We are using vbpicgallery as a garages system at the moment and it does the job fine until something more suited comes out.
That is your OPINION - which is as useless as any one else's opinion including mine.

vpicgallery is NOT a garage. It is a picture gallery. If it works great for you - woo f'n hoo. It does not work great for many of us. This thread (and countless others) are for people who want a REAL garage. Thankfully one is just about done.

Comprehend please before jumping the gun next time. Unbelievable.

vile2006 08-13-2008 03:28 PM

OK, back on track here guys. Pete, I agree vbpicgallery isn't a garage. I think Veccy was just offering me a suggestion that may or not be suitable for my application in the interim of someone producing one which will work for us. For the idea, I appreciate his effort and I'm sure once he saw the link I posted to the forum above with a garage, he saw the differences in what he has and what I need.

As for "Thankfully one is just about done", do we have confirmation of that from a certain source that one is REALLY almost done that will be made available to the public. I assume you're talking about the one for e1320.com. However, that thread looks to have gone stail with no updates from him since the end of July.

I would post a request for an update but since this is the determing factor of our purchase, I haven't a license and hence, can't post in the real meat of the forum to inquire. I would happily watch closely if someone was to post in that thread (that I linked in my first post of this thread) asking for an update on teh status and if he was still going to make it available for free.

Thanks!

Snkypete 08-13-2008 03:39 PM

Yes I have been doing beta testing for someone. It was completed the other day. They did a very good job, took a lot of suggestions from 'a car guy's perspective' instead of a coders.

No, it is not e1320's.

It does not use a central repository.

Unfortunately my programmer left for vacation this morning so it will be a week before we have it installed on a second system.

I don't think they can announce it on here because they will be looking for donations. I don't know how all of that works admittedly so that is the reason for me being vague. I don't want to get them (or myself) in any trouble.

vile2006 08-13-2008 03:43 PM

Well that makes sense and I wouldn't want you getting in trouble on here. If you want to email me more details, you can do so to my user name @ gmail.

I am certainly glad ot get a confirmation that something is underway and nearing completion.

Thanks Pete!

It seems like a simple garage could be made by modifying a few phrases and adding more input boxes for speed, torque, etc.

It's much more than that. What makes the garage the garage is the ability to have modifications entered in subsectons and put dollar amounts, where they were purchased, manufacturers, etc. vPicGallery simply provides a text box to write things. I agree it should have been done this way from the start, but if they haven't changed it in the past year of everyone screaming for a garage I doubt they will now.

Doesn't matter, there is a live working copy now. I should have our copy up as soon as our programmer returns - he's psyched to install it.

Killeglass 08-15-2008 06:41 PM

Would love to see what they are doing

I have a huge car site that this would be a great solution and would be very happy to support any way needed to keep it going

timallen82 08-18-2008 10:22 PM

Oh wow! This is wonderful news!

Hopefully it will get released shortly

Thanks Snkypete ;)

/subscribed.

I'd pay money for a truly integrated garage.

wottech 08-19-2008 01:47 AM

Can't wait to see the product!! Will it be a pay product, or free for all? Either way, I'll be picking up a copy ASAP. We've been on vB for over 2 years now and have been looking for a garage the whole time to replace the phpbbgarage we used to have.

Speaking of which, if this is a port of Fusion Scripts, will I be able to import the db info from the phpbbgarage? That would make this even better!!

**The info below references the table, "phpbb_garage", where the DB prefix in this case is 'phpBB'.**

You should be able to, but I would make sure that the member IDs on your VBulletin install match those of your old phpBB forum install.

More specifically, your database info for your phpBBGarage will have matched the member IDs from your old phpBB forum install.

Therefore, you will need to make sure you look at the tables in your DB of the (soon to be installed) VBulletin port of the Garage AND your backed up phpBBGarage DB and compare the two and make any necessary adjustments.

This thread goes now way beyond what is allowed in the Pre-Sales section.
