I'm searchin for a hack that allows my users themselves to take care about the own avatars.
A hack that makes possible to load an avatar from an other server, without uploading the avatar to my own server.

I think they are much people here who want this hack.

Please don't tell me about the freehoster hotlinking problem.
My users are not kiddies, and they can care about their own avatars.

I dont see why more people arent requesting this, as disk space on servers and such can get expensive and those who want users to have custom avatars without wasting bandwith on their sites and wasting space on their servers. What I need is this...

Instead of uploading it to the database or as a file in my directory, I would like to have it served elsewhere. Completely. I've seen a few boards do this in CGI and I really want to do this in vBulletin as it is faster and more secure than most of the CGI boards out there. An official hack from Jelsoft would be VERY cool, but I'm looking for anything at this juncture. If you have information, please email me or I'll turn on email notification for this thread. As said many, many times, it is against the policy of 99% of free hosts (and a good many non-free hosts) to hotlink images like this. Your account with would likely be deleted within hours, leaving behind a broken image. It is not responsible to write a hack like this on anyone's part.

I want avatars, but don't want em on my server :) So please , you Xpert hackers, tell us the secret to our happyness :)

Hi, I would like to have a hack that enables users to load an avatar from ANOTHER SERVER. SO that they DON'T have to upload it to MY server, so that the avatars don't get on my server/don't affect the server. But that they just have to do something like

In their description something like that would be or something, I know it can be done since I had the hack on my vb1.13 :) But that was a long long time ago. But if anyone would care to explain how to do it I would be so so so so happy!

Usually the free hosts do that if youre only hosting images and files. Only Angelfire, geocities, and I think Tripod have actually taken measures, all the others haven't. Most of my users have their own websites and run those websites so their hosts dont delete their accounts on account of a 10k image.

I do see your point, however, but some people do need this hack as they need to dedicate all of thier space soley to posts.

Wish you luck on your quest. I personally have no use for this as my concern is to have valid images over bandwidth.

Stop whining about free hosting not supporting images and stuff, I use the forum for a gamers group^, if the avatars don't work they'll know and undo it, but the thing is we all have free webspace from our providers here in belgium and we can place images there and link them to vb with no problem at all. But the thing is that you guys didn't include that feature, I had that feature on y vb1.13 so don't tell me it's not possible on vb 2.0.0 !!

Considering avatars were a hack in v1.1.x, that's hardly reason to expect vB to put something like this in.

Of the main hackers that are around here, Kier, Wayne, and I will not do this hack, and I can't speak for Mas*Mind, Overgrow or Bira, but I betcha they feel the same way. (Sorry if I forgot anyone here.)

I hardly consider laying out the facts whining. Just because you seem to want everything for nothing and seem to think people here owe you something does not mean we are whining.

Hell man, you turned from a col guy into a prick in less then a year ! ****, before you were more then happy to make another hack or help some-one else out but yourself, but it seems now YOU are the one doing everything for MONEY. So get ****ing bent man, you're turning into an old jurk.

This topic never really came up before I became a moderator. Just for the record, I wouldn't have done the hack then either, and I would have had the same attitude about it then, too.

Maybe if people looked around the vBulletin system and learned how to use it, you will see that a hack is not needed to store all images except avatars on another server.

If you want to do this, simply edit the imagesfolder variable.

If you really must have avatars on another server, look at Kier's Avatar's as files hack. I am sure you can make the appropriate changes needed.

In my Personal Opinion, installing a hack like this only degrades the quality of the Internet and in the long run will be more hassle than the 2 or 3 bucks you will save in bandwidth. The hassles will involve more than just a single server. They will involve dissatisfied users, broken images, increase loading times. A lot of hassle when there are so many other ways to decrease bandwidth that are more effective, professional and will make your users happy.

The choice to do this is yours though.
