Is Your Forum your entire website?

Strange question, but basically, is it:

1. A section of your website which is accessed from your website home page or another page on the site. So it'd have an information or other type of website at domain.com and the forum at something like 'forum.domain.com or domain.com/forums or something else. Doesn't matter what kind of website it is, be it a wiki, blog, CMS powered site (Joomla, Drupal, etc) or just a plain HTML and CSS website.

2. Most of the website, but there's a portal as well. You basically use a custom script powered by vBulletin as a home page.

3. The entire site. Anyone who goes to your site lands straight on a list of forums with the usual vBulletin forum home page layout. There's no main site, no portal or no anything except a discussion forum.

Just wondering, out of boredom.

The closest for me is #2 as I use vBadvanced for a portal page. However the forum is not the main part of my site. I would weigh it as 50% of the site overall, with eFiction covering the remaining content. The portal is just a landing page where updates from all areas are displayed.

^I would then personally say it's the first option then, just because of the presence of non vBulletin add on scripts (eFiction).

not everyone uses vBAdvanced - some create their own scripts powered by vBulletin

you should rephrase it to ... "You basically use a custom script powered by vBulletin as a home page..."

Also, some high-end users will like a complete powerful CMS system.... Maybe for writing news articles, ect.

Brandon Sheley 07-07-2008 02:33 PM

I use the wordpress script as my home page, with the forums in a sub domain

Lizard King 07-07-2008 02:39 PM

I use a custom portal solution i coded that integrates with different parts of my site such as vb blog , articles etc..

So can someone edit the poll please? I've edited the first post, but can't find how to change the poll options here.

I'm in the process to do so...
for much that I love vB, is just a 60% of the project ;)

TheProphet 07-07-2008 07:02 PM

I have vBA running on the front

My site is in my sig.

legionofangels 07-07-2008 07:05 PM

No, I have content in multiple locations. 2 Blog Systems, 2 separate archives, and the forum.

My Host hates me I think.

Shazz 07-07-2008 07:07 PM

Homepage > then forum

FLMom 07-07-2008 07:17 PM

My forums are just an extra part of my site. The content I have runs over several pages which is the main part of the website.

StonePilot 07-07-2008 07:53 PM

#2. Most all of it is the forum with different vbulletin plug-ins for other stuff like arcade, etc.

citricguy 07-12-2008 11:15 PM

vB + WordPress

blind-eddie 07-12-2008 11:35 PM

I too use vbadvance for my front page. But, I am thinking of changing to something
different. My vba page is a resource hog. Multiple Iframes & PHP scripts loading at the same time. I hate that, but enjoy what vba offers. I may try to create my own, using powered by vBulletin pages.

C138 Kaysone 07-13-2008 09:34 AM

my site goes through a portal first then to the actual website

cheat-master30 07-13-2008 08:29 PM

Cool, this topic is still going. Guess most people here use a website or portal, but I really want to know what the people who voted 'Other' use, because at least one of them likely hasn't said...

Rapscallion 07-15-2008 09:13 PM

I've yet to vote. I have one forum that is the entirety of the site, and three more where there are various degrees of front pages to go through first.

Caddyman 07-15-2008 09:17 PM

welll, i run vB, wordpressmu, the vB is really modded

i have a cafepress shop integrated
photoplog integrated
flashchat integrated
frontpage is vbadvacned, with integrated frontpage slideshow

cheat-master30 07-15-2008 09:26 PM

^That's quite a lot of integration you've used there, so I'd say that comes under being a content site more (multi user wordpress being the reason).

Shelley_c 07-15-2008 09:41 PM

My forum is my entire site though I've been looking at wordpress as a front page (I've been saying that for the past 2 years).

Better Joomla than WordPress?

cheat-master30 07-19-2008 03:50 PM

^I'd say that depends on what kind of site you're running and what's kind of content you need, since Joomla is a CMS, and Wordpress is meant for blogs.

Ok let's say, I just want to show news into the frontpage and send them to the forum?
Joomla or Wodpress???

Jase2 07-19-2008 10:49 PM

Both of them are suitable for what you want to do, iogames. It all depends on what exactly you feel comfortable with. I personally, would most likely go with Wordpress, providing I could find a decent looking skin. :)

I'd go with wordpress. Eventually.

anthonycea 07-19-2008 11:01 PM

We use vB Advanced as a home page, but no one goes there since the main domain points to the forum home page.

URL's are set up as follows:

http://www.forumpostersunion.com/~fo...cmps_index.php

http://www.forumpostersunion.com/cmps_index.php

www.forumpostersunion.com goes to forum index.

Anyone have any suggestions on getting better use out of vBA or the way we have the URL's set up or why we have 2 URL's for CMPS in the first place ?

what about talking 'serverload-wise' ?

Jase2 07-19-2008 11:31 PM

I believe Joomla would be more 'server-intensive' then Wordpress.

Quillz 07-26-2008 03:32 AM

My entire site is simply the board, yes. I guess it's similar to Offtopic.com in that's all it really is, just a board to talk about stuff.

Keesa 07-26-2008 08:30 AM

I think Wordpress is preferable and it has quite a lot of ways you can cache and optimize.

Investigate the newer "magazine style" skins for the ways Wordpress is being used as a CMS, most notably Revolution Theme.

CardMafia 08-04-2008 02:10 PM

my domain goes directly to the forums
