SMS Capabilities (Text Messaging to Cell Phone from Forums)

I am discontinuing this modification while I redesign it. :) If you need support or want information, email me at rob@robwoelich.com.

Wow. Any chance of getting this working for Australia? :D

I've actually looked into it. The bad news is that the cell phone companies there don't have the same deal with the email addresses that will send a text to your phone. Any company can be added that has the email to text type system.

Maybe in the future, though!

Edit: Now is the future! :p Australia is supported. Remember the limits on which companies can be supported, which amounts to those who have the email-to-text services.

Notice on the find and replace in the readme, what you're trying to find may vary slightly, especially if you're using a different style. You can see the general structure of your code, though, and copy it accordingly.

I've updated the modification with a list of supported companies. Like I've mentioned, this can only work with companies that offer a public email address where people can email someone and have it sent as a text message. This seems to only be a common thing in the US. I apologize for lack of support for other areas, but that's beyond my control. :p

tafreeh 06-19-2008 09:23 PM

wooooow man ..... a great mod after long time :)

but right now its kinda useless to me... can you add
ROGERS and FIDO (( Canada ))

and some asian companies
like
Telenor
Mobilink
Jazz
etc etc

That depends on if they have the said "texting emails". For example, with Alltel, you can send an email to xxxxxxxxxx@message.alltel.com (xxx being the phone number) and Alltel turns that into a text message to that phone number. If those companies have an email or a system like that, then yeah, I could. :)

If anybody has companies which have a texting email like that which I don't have added, let me know what they are, and what the emails are and I'll add them. ;)

Edit: I found Rogers, and they do have such an address. I'll look into the others you listed and try to update them later today. :)

tafreeh 06-19-2008 09:30 PM

Not necesscarily. This lets a user specify their cell phone number in their user options just like their email address, and receive alerts and messages that way.

rooban12 06-19-2008 09:41 PM

wow g8

CompuJonathan 06-19-2008 09:50 PM

Rob,

Would it be possible to user the "from" address in the email send the users email address on file? That way a type of reply could be made?

For a more complicated system, it would be nice to integrate maybe SMTP into the script and have it receive SMS email replies to maybe user@domain.com ... just an idea.

Thanks!
Jonathan

Baldilocks 06-19-2008 09:50 PM

Product Installed, all template edits were made during installation and verified. Still not showing up on the UserCP menu.

Any ideas?

okhissabigfish 06-19-2008 09:56 PM

Installed. Not showing on the User CP. I use the default version of vBull. Any ideas? Nice idea...I love it!

There's a note in the readme about it, but for some reason when the email hits the cell phone company, it disregards any headers like "From" or "Reply To". In my case, it always shows my default email for my hosting account. I haven't been able to get it to change.

This is something that I'd like to look into for the future, though. I've thought about managing a system for replies, and maybe someday that will be possible. :)

Hmm, weird. Did you get any errors when you imported the product?

PM me and I'll try to help you out with it.

rooban12 06-19-2008 10:22 PM

its working perfectly for me

robwoelich 06-19-2008 10:25 PM

Weird. It seems there's some issue with 3.7.0 perhaps? I've updated compatibility to be 3.7.1 because that's the only thing I can think of. My test forums were 3.7.1 and I noticed that the people who can't get it to work seem to be using 3.7.0.

Maybe I'll download 3.7.0 again and find out what I need to do to get it working on that. :(

okhissabigfish 06-19-2008 10:32 PM

is using 3.7.0. Help when you can?

I'll work on 3.7.0 compatibility as soon as I can. I'll try to get it done tonight and I'll let you know when it's finished. :)

I'd be down to help with that. I've been spending more time on the actual integration with the parts of the forum than compiling a lot of companies and countries, but that would be useful too.

I'll PM you. :)

TsirhCitna 06-20-2008 12:24 AM

Installed and working.

It would be great if you could reply to the messages.

Megatr0n 06-20-2008 12:34 AM

How about companies in the UK?

O2
Vodafone
Orange
3
Virgin?

robwoelich 06-20-2008 12:41 AM

I'm going to work with iogames to use his list of companies. That should cover about everything. :p And yes, it would be nice to be able to reply. Something for the future...

Chadi 06-20-2008 01:10 AM

Can we set user group permissions for this? If not, please add that feature.

Feature Request:
- user group permission
- allow only buddy/friends to send txt
- minimum number of member post to allow txt send (if other options not set, such as "buddy only" permission)

abrecher 06-20-2008 02:53 AM

Fantastic Mod, only problem is that it's not showing up at all in the user CP. I checked USERCP_SHELL and the code was automatically added correctly. Any ideas ? I'm using 3.7.1 Patch Level 2

Boofo 06-20-2008 03:07 AM

This doesn't let others see your cellphone number does it? It won't make it publicly available to anyone? Like the email option?

iBlazee 06-20-2008 03:11 AM

Please add "Bell Canada" and some major and big cell companies in India!

Boofo 06-20-2008 05:04 AM

Another good addition to this would be to have the option in the postbit drop down. ;)

Can you add turkcell (Turkey) also?

Keyser S?ze 06-20-2008 05:14 AM

this mod could use an address book, also let me ask u say i list my celll phone number, can anyone see the numbers? makes me wonder what if like telemarketers or ppl i dont want calling me got the, id rather to users it always shows as **** even in their address book, in the access book it shouldjust be my forums user name

just to keep things safer

Boofo 06-20-2008 05:16 AM

It works the same as the email option where they can't see they email address they are sending to.

Hornstar 06-20-2008 05:40 AM

Looks great, seems to have much potential on my forums. thanks.
