have you upgraded your php ...

to 5?

just curious ... :D

nexialys 06-11-2008 12:24 PM

serious hosts always upgrade their PHP and MySQL when there is new official releases... so if your host is yet on PHP 4.3.1, you really have to move on... you are hosted by a lazy boy in his bedroom.

KURTZ 06-11-2008 12:38 PM

heheheh that's right Nexia, my previous host, when i ask them to upgrade php and mysql to version 5, told me that 'if i wanna this upgrade, i must buy another DB cause they can't move the data from one to another DB, also told me that the upgrade of php was scheduled for fall 2008 ...

so i changed my host ... :S

SEOvB 06-11-2008 02:40 PM

lol you had to buy DB's?

Thatd be a good indiciation of time to move also

KURTZ 06-11-2008 02:56 PM

yeah 10€ per DB ... :O

PS. i've corrected a word in the previous post ... :D i wrote 'they can' instead 'they can't' ...

I'm a Server Admin for a friend of mine's dedicated server, so we get to do all the upgrades and stuff.

Running on PHP 5.2.5, at the moment. Also running MySQL 5.0.45-community.

toonysnn 06-11-2008 09:43 PM

Upgraded as soon as I could. Running php 5.2.6

Both of those versions are what Hostgator is running on the server I am one.

Still on 4 here. No time to migrate, really. I work for the government and am just never home. :(

Boofo 06-12-2008 02:18 AM

Oooohhhh, CIA stuff. Cool!

Dismounted 06-12-2008 05:43 AM

I upgraded to PHP 5 ages ago :p. I'm currently on PHP 5.2.6 & MySQL 5.0.58.

Boofo 06-12-2008 06:39 AM

All I did was floor(PHP 5.2.6) and that is how I have 5.2.5 on my server.

Sometimes they are not lazy but don't want to help thousands of people fix their code for php4 to 5 and mysql 4 to 5.

Well, I guess that's a form of lazy too. :erm:

I've been running PHP 5.x for more than a year now.

acco 06-14-2008 01:04 PM

I've not upgraded as on shared hosting, but my hosting company says I can use php5 by adding .php5 as the extension.

I'm unsure what I'd have to do, example does all hacks php files work the same way (.php5) & would this make some hacks not work properly because they are called for as .php?

reason above is why I have not upgraded to php5.

Marco van Herwaarden 06-16-2008 06:35 AM

Renaming all files to .php5 will break vBulletin (although this can be solved), but also will break most modifications like you already guessed.

Can't you just choose to have the .php5 extension when downloading vBulletin and all be fine?

Marco van Herwaarden 06-17-2008 07:46 AM

That will only work without problems on a first installation. Also 99% of the modifications do not handle this correctly.

I don't upgrade my PHP, never have.

However I pay my hosting company to make sure that the latest versions of all the server software are running on my machine so never had a problem.

On my localhost, I just use wampserver so upgrade it to the latest version via a Windows double-click install and I get updated Apache, PHP and MySQL in about 15 seconds.

KURTZ 06-17-2008 04:52 PM

uhm wampserver, it seems to be freeware ... nice tip Wayne ... i'll try it :) (right now i use easyphp and it's out of date)

Jase2 06-17-2008 09:01 PM

Both of mine are up-to-date! :)
