Why I'm Hesitant to Upgrade to 3.7

Not sure if it belongs in this particular thread but I just wanted to see if anybody agreed with me.

I'm rather hesitant to upgrade to 3.7. Just from what i've seen, it seems way to much like a clone to myspace, facebook or other social networking sites. The whole buddy list thing, albums, completely redone profiles is kind of a turn off.

I really like what the basic version of 3.6 offers and would love to stay with it forever if possible. Anybody else feel the same way?

Wow! hold don!
I will hold the upgrade too... but I don't think vB is a Clone of nothing, I mean is the trend on social networking out there, but correct me if I'm wrong, vB is before those networks you mentioned

Bradley_Wint 05-02-2008 04:12 PM

vB was out that way longer than most of the sites mentioned. I am not sure when MySpace started but they didn't design vBulletin to be a clone of anything.

Boofo 05-02-2008 04:16 PM

Isn't cloning the highest form of flattery? And I have to agree that vb went the way of cloning to some extent. But the they all eventually end up doing that or they get stale and stuck. It is called progress.

AND!
is the only script you can acquire and have the same success that its creators :D

Note: No pun intended

Remember that just because it has the feature does not mean you need to use them, surely a weak reason NOT to go to 3.7 I want to move from 3.5 to 3.7 but I need a good stradigy first.

I am loving all the nice new features of 3.7 not sure why others are complaining.

I agree. I'm sure several others have read my posts on this issue before.

vBulletin is no longer a "message board". It's a social network application that just so happens to allow you to create categories and discussions.

Jelsoft is putting too much time and energy into bloating their forum with extremely ridiculous features. They always have been doing that, but I didn't really know any different back then.

: shrug : IMO, running vB seems kind of amature for me anymore. Kind of like when I first started creating websites, I used to use geocities. Something I look back on and laugh now.

There are lots of things to say about 3.7 . Mainly i shared all my opinions within http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=269083

But eerything happened couple months ago. The saddest day in vB history is the day IB purchased Jelsoft. Everything after than is effects of that sale including terrible 3.7

No. Not at all.

Well I suppose i'm in the minority then. Don't get me wrong I love vB. Especially version 3.6.8. Just don't know if I'll ever make the jump to 3.7

ssslippy 05-12-2008 02:53 PM

I enjoy the tabbed profiles and you can turn all the new stuff off so whats to stop you from upgrading?

Paul M 05-12-2008 03:55 PM

Im not in any hurry to move to 3.7 for the forum I help run (not vb.org). We have no desperate need for the social networking or photo features (or thread prefixes, or tags). There are a few other bits that would be useful but they can all be added to 3.6 via mods I believe (we already have post edit history).

DieselMinded 05-12-2008 04:28 PM

I Upgraded , I have Prefixes and tags turned off , also put the blogs on there and the recipe mod database and about 60 Mods from vBorg , Site is Lightning Fast members love it there editing there profiles adding youtube videos to them ect... I also have Arcade and Casino , If members dont stay its not because of lack of features Tho 99% of my extras you have to be a paid subscriber to use them even editing your profile .

We asked everyone to write a blog about there vehicle what mods they have done and ect... and will use the blog for the personal feel .

Also running vBSEO 3.2.0 RC5

Things are going good none of my competitors have any thing more than a bland forum , were an interactive community where they can come and do just about anything , Diesel Trucks being the main reason we come together

Boofo 05-12-2008 04:30 PM

I think coding is easier for 3.7 hacks than they were for 3.5.4, which is what I came from. I never ran 3.6 so I can't say if it is worth jumping to 3.7 from. But, and I hate admitting this, Paul does make a good point. ;)

My opinion: If you're happy with what you're using now, stay there. Even if my profile says that I'm member since Oct 2006, I was using vB and vB.org with another account 3 years earlier (Oct 2003). And before that time I was using the Free version of vB (Yes, at their first steps they had a free version too). So after so many years, I can definetelly say: "Better stay with a feature less but working fine for you, than with a feature rich but complecated for you".
My experiance as developer for 2 years in vB mods. I can guarantee that one of my mods is really a revolutation with so many features (but difficult in its first configuration). But it has only 5% of the sales of another ease in use mod. So? Users wants something to work out of the box, easily understandable from the end users (Don't forget that our members are not all guru like administrators).
Some months ago I developed a mini mod for my own use. Maybe someday I'll publish it. It gives real statistics to admin about what their users are doing. eg how many of them have upload avatar? How many are using the "exotic" features that the marketing team advertises as a must need. You'll surprise when you'll get results (eg for ver 3.7) that less than 5% are using "friends" or "albums" etc etc.

If he has to turn them off (extra time) why to upgrade????

Boofo 05-16-2008 03:40 PM

I think once you actually upgrade, you will be glad you did. There is a whole lot of stuff now that makes a lot of things easier to do without having to add hacks for them. Granted, there are some drawbacks, but you can turn off the social networking, among other things, so you do have that option.

edytwinky 01-05-2009 02:24 PM

OK, I was hesitant at first but then after a couple months of thinking and talking it over with other members of my board, I went ahead and upgraded to 3.7.4 after using 3.6.8 for nearly two years or however long its been.

I turned off all the social groups and albums and let me say its just like 3.6.8 but site does seem to run faster. There are some nice features that are built in like human verification. Plus its compatible with Blog 2.0.

Had to upgrade my template but that was fine with me.

Overall i'm very satisfied I decided to upgrade. Its not as bad as I originally thought when you turn off all the social networking stuff.
