Well, this is my real first attempt at a vBulletin Hack, which is amazingly simple yet effective.

The main reason I dove into this project was because well, there are some newspro type scripts out there that were effective but didn't do what I wanted.

For example, Newspro was a great program, but really integrating it with vBulletin would have been a pain (I know there was one out there, but the news wouldn't be dynamic with the database, which was what I wanted). Then there was vBportal, which did what I wanted, but I tried to install it once and screwed up my whole board. I waited for a later release, but wasn't comfortable with digging in the source code of the board itself.

So this is my creation, PluhNews (named after my website). The features are:

1. A completely external script from the vBulletin scripts that pulls information from the database into news form. Pulls the thread name, ID, and many other properties, and also pulls the post content itself into news form.

2. Pulls the number of comments, and links to them, also pulling the last person that posted the comment.

3. Easy to customize - little php knowledge and HTML required.

4. Very possible to have categories, though the setup there would require you to have message icons as your categories, and you have to dig to find out what the icon id number is (this is still being worked on for setup and possible release)

5. A Headlines script which you can include in another area on your php pages for dynamic updates.

5. You just have to see for yourself: http://pluh.com or http://pluh.com/news.php

I'm just curious if anyone would be interested in this script. As far as I know, it's fast and efficient, but I'm no expert on PHP or MySql like the vBulletin programmers. This is just something I just wanted to try and see if I could do, and I did.

So what do you think? :)

Oh and uhh, you have to use HTML for now...plus smilies don't work yet, but that's in the plans and stuff.

I'm still new to all this, so go easy on me :)

Kayn.

VBportal has come along way.. I used to say the same thing... the installation seemed tedious.. but.. hey it works great now... with no problems :)

Plus wajones is VERY helpfull if you run into problems.. you just have to ask.. heh

That's cool though, I totally believe you.

I just wanted to try this myself, and I figured it out. It's not as effective as VBPortal, but it does the job.

VBPortal is a great script, and I recommend it to those who want more features than what I have here. :)

Kayn, I took a look and what you've done is rather smart. I think we could make use of it on our site.

Cool! All I needed was at least one (more will come, in time I believe).

I'll get started later on to get it presentable/configurable.

It looks great to me... just wanted to give ya a hard time.. sorry.. :)

keep up the great work! :)

This seems to do basically the same thing as the weblog hack... how does this differ?

Kayn 05-23-2001 02:05 PM

It is pretty much the same as the weblog hack, except you don't have to modify any of the vBulletin source code.

Kayn, I'd be very interested in this also :D

Well, now that there is some interest (YAY!), keep an eye out on the releases forum for the release. Should be within this week, depending on my time (very VERY busy guy, if you couldn't already tell in my signature).
