Recommended FTP software?

Just need advice and links if possible. Never had to use FTP much, but I want a dedicated program for this (and if you're wondering, most mods from here are like three files, and most new pages I ever had to add that weren't part of default vBulletin didn't need to be added in terms of multiple folders). So yeah, any recommendations? And free would be nice, and free of spyware and such like for obvious reasons.

deezelpope 04-10-2008 09:57 PM

We use FileZilla.:)

cheat-master30 04-10-2008 09:58 PM

Thanks. I'll try that.

Thomas P 04-10-2008 10:34 PM

Absolutely FileZilla.

Awesome and for free.

King Kovifor 04-10-2008 11:08 PM

I would punch it with my opinion, but it wouldn't really matter much because I am on a mac. :)

Already using it now. Was very effective in upgrading vBulletin install to release candidate 3.

JhJ 04-10-2008 11:18 PM

I use either flashfxp or filezilla.

Oh good! I like it cuz it's pretty easy for me to use and understand.

Alfa1 04-11-2008 12:06 AM

IPswitch WS_FTP professional 2006 or higher.

Michael Biddle 04-11-2008 12:26 AM

flashfxp or smartftp.

Boofo 04-11-2008 12:33 AM

I use Total Commander for FTP. It is also the best file manager you will ever use.

SEOvB 04-11-2008 02:07 AM

winSCP

davidw 04-11-2008 02:55 AM

I used to use SmartFTP until I updated to version 3.0 where now they force the non-disableable transfer queue, which meant that my transfers would take from a couple minutes (prior to version 3.0) to maybe a few hours (now). So, I switched to FileZilla. I've downloaded a copy of the latest old release of Smart before the 3.0, so I have that in case I want to go back.

Paul M 04-11-2008 06:54 AM

SmartFTP (2.5) atm.

Butcher 04-11-2008 05:35 PM

Used FlashFXP for years but do run into the odd problem when instructed to upload files in BINARY mode. Even if you go into the options and select BINARY as your upload method it still transfers files in ASCII.
I could go further into it but it is too much hassle :)

But on this point i still do use FlashFXP as it's what i'm used to and works great other than the problem above. Did try smartFTP but really don't like it and it does seem rather slow.

Gonna check out some of the others mentioned here

Jase2 04-11-2008 06:04 PM

SmartFTP -- great program!

GoTTi 04-11-2008 11:29 PM

Dan, what is your FTP speed with TC?

SmileyR 04-13-2008 11:18 PM

CoreFtp all the way. I have used coreFTP for 2 years and i dont want to change... I have tried multiple ones but either they were to slow or had ugly organization. CoreFTP has a nice organization and is fast :D

Zachariah 04-16-2008 11:17 AM

I had a client that moved their web site from one server to another. During the move their gallery's upload folder and sub folders changed ownership and CHMOD went to 644. I needed a recursive FTP client to CHMOD 1000's of sub folders with about 300,000 files from 644 to 777. WinSCP worked for me.

http://winscp.net

- free also :D

Caerydd 04-18-2008 09:39 AM

I use FireFTP on my work machine, and Cyberduck on my mac at home.

I usually max out my connection at 50kb/s upload. I can also max my dl out at 1mb/s

Boofo 04-19-2008 01:31 AM

I get about 60kb upload now after changing the block size. I was getting around 54kb before. I get the same on DL that you get, though. Supposedly, the upload speed is supposed to be a lot better, according to their forum.

Transverse Styles 04-19-2008 01:43 AM

Started with LeechFTP and moved to FileZilla

projectego 04-19-2008 10:02 PM

Another vote for SmartFTP from me. Great program. :)

figu120 04-19-2008 11:53 PM

Quillz 04-22-2008 03:26 AM

I use and recommend SmartFTP.

sunilvarma 04-22-2008 04:51 AM

FireFTP if you are using Firefox.

tunistunis 04-25-2008 01:15 PM

FileZilla

WantedLebanese 04-25-2008 02:21 PM

Core FTP.

By the way filezilla is free and my host advised me to use it but i didn't lol!

Opserty 04-25-2008 02:25 PM

FileZilla, plain and simple, yet functional.

Yup.

WinSCP - the current version handles standard ftp in addition to sftp which it was originally designed for.

Can you recommend anything other than Cyberduck - cause that thing is *buggy* IME

Personally I have only use Cyberduck and Transmit FTP (I probably used another one in there but don't remember). For the $30 that it costs to purchase a license, you have several nice features (plus a mini editor that can use to make quick remote changes). And if you do a lot of PHP programming, if you purchase Coda, they work together in several aspects to make remote editing quite fun actually. :D

But I found Cyberduck rather annoying and buggy too.
