Use Coda? Here is an interesting video.

I am a power user of Coda. The only feature I really don't use is the terminal. :( But I love the app (and panic in general) so I read the developers blogs... :D (I'm a total geek, I know!). Going to Steven F's Blog this after noon, I found this little gem:

http://www.viddler.com/explore/rentzsch/videos/14

It is Cabel Sasser talking about the design aspect of Coda, how they debated over things, and really, what it took to build this application.

So, if you like it, just leave your comments. ;) Especially cause I want to know what you all think!

Hopefully that is a compliment. :) Cause my mind isn't working today. And I really really found this video interesting. And I would assume that all people on vB.org aren't major geeks like me to come across the video. So this might be much easier. :D

What is Coda?

Basically it is a program for hand coding sites. It incorporates the terminal (for mySQL queries), books (for reference), Transmit FTP (also by Panic; FTP obviously), CSS Editor, Safari (Previews), SubEthaEdit (collaborative Editing), and A sites pane for keeping track of stuff. All in one unified window. :)

But it is Mac-Only. :(

am i allowed to use the word `geek` here as you used the word `anorak` :)
anyway that stuff is way over my head..............

King Kovifor 03-29-2008 10:25 PM

Yes. You can call me a geek. :) I am one. And Where did I say anorak?

Guest190829 03-29-2008 10:32 PM

Looks neat, but I already have too many editors.

King Kovifor 03-29-2008 10:37 PM

It actually knocked any editors I had out of the run for me...

But the design that went into it was actually a very very interesting story.

Would you use Coda if you hadn't bought BBEdit?

don't know... not sure.. i played with the first RC of Coda ... long time ago.. ;) was a crap in my hands, i hate playing with these eye-candy softwares... i'll take a look now that you talk about it, as i have a dev key for it!

King Kovifor 03-30-2008 01:15 AM

You have a dev key to it? And how did you get an RC? And I feel it has improved greatly since 1.0!

bah, dev keys are available when you are long lasting tester for the guys, and when you are friendly.. ;) -- this is just a serial that last longer, nothing fancy!

i also get RC from other softwares the same way... :) see, you are actually playing with vb 3.7 RC1 ... many can do that!

and i can tell after testing it, the new version is more flexible, but also a lot more eye-candy... :)

I meant from Panic because they don't usually release pre release software. I guess you have beta tested for them quite a few times? And it is way more flexible but more eye candy, I am not sure... They seem to have stayed pretty much the same since 1.0, but they have added quite a few features since the beginnig (and they meant to add things such as folding code cause cabel showed the mock up of it). I really respect the guys over at Panic. ;)

Awesome video. I really like these kinds of talks. If Apple had a channel9-type website, I'd be there every day!

As for Coda: I don't think it's anything special. It looks nice, but functionally I still much prefer TextMate.

I find it "special" because it wraps everything together... If it was just a text editor, I am not sure if I would find it so special... Cause, well, it would just be another text editor.

But I still like how Cabel revealed that they had tried code folding, but scrapped it for v1.0!
