AdminCP > Usergroups > Promotions

You can set it in there, just change Reputation Level, Days Registered & Posts to 0. Promotion Strategy to Join Date and that will send them to the newbie group.

What you want to do is copy the Registered Users group and make that new group the Promoted one. Copy both the usergroup permissions and the forum permissions for the group. Then you can create a Promotion to move users from the Registered group to the new Promoted group after x posts. You may rename the Registered usersgroup to the Newbie group if you want. Then run the Promotion manually through the Scheduled Tasks and it will move all the users for you. Now you can change the permissions for the Newbie (old Regsitered) group to have the more limited permissions.

i know how to do the promotions i need to know how to change the default usergroup from members (usergroup ID 2) to newbies which is usergroup ID 23

Whats the problem with moving your members from the existing Registered Users usergroup? Otherwise you are probably looking at File/Plugin edits.

It is hard-coded in the software that the users automatically get put into usergroup ID 2.

Just wanted to add that this method works very well for controlling spammers. My board has been overrun by them and the "Report Post" button was getting worn out. The only thing I would add is to be sure to check forum permissions once you've set this up. Setting usergroup permissions does not necessarily override individual forum permissions for that usergroup. I had to go through and manually adjust. No big deal. But it makes the difference between this "working" and not.

I would just like to point out that I found SUSN's method to be ingenious and quick

You can alternatively try my mod. It does just that and it should work on a vb 3x forum.

Um, when I ran Scheduled Tasks, Promotions, it sent all Registered Users to the newbie group. Ran it again and about half went to Reg Users... a quick look shows the newbie group's users have 0 posts, while the Reg Users have 1 or more. Nice!

Edit: Except for users who appear to be currently logged in, no matter the number of posts, they are in the newbie group.

Edit 2: This does NOT work. Members with more than 1 post keep getting shuffled back into the newbie group.
