annoying 3 letters search limit

Hello!

whenever I try to search something in vbulletin.org, 4 out of 5 times I get error message (you can't use less than three letters in you search pharse). but some words need 2 letters like: pm, cp, bb... etc

any hope we can search at well someday?

thanks!

yes I agree... I often use google to search this site since the site itself is so limited... I think that's what they want to be honest.

It's more of a MySQL limitation than a vBulletin limitation. If you want to search for 3 letter strings, put this into google:

"abc" site:vbulletin.org

Edit: Must drink coffee before posting.

Its a mysql limitation, there are many previous threads about it if you want to know more. :)

Well I don't seem to have that limitation on my sites.... so I guess I'm confused.

I guess it's the fact that we get blocked from doing searches under 4 that is the issue...

You have a MySQL based forum that allows two letter queries?

You must be using vBulletin's Internal Search then. vBulletin.org does not use vBulletin's internal search as it impacts the server more than using MySQL fulltext searching, and vBulletin.org needs as much performance as it can get.

perhaps so - but it's still annoying! Example: You search hours and hours for key word "private message" and the modification you're looking for is actually entitled PM blablabla = ERG! Just a thought - perhaps some key words like PM or vB or the like can be added to a whitelist or some such?

Which is better to use for the average site? Fulltext or vb's own search?

This will be much easier once vB 3.7 is installed (this is not a going to install it anytime soon hint either). Tags are amazing. :)

PoetJA-1975 03-21-2008 08:46 PM

Yeah - I like the tags feature - will be much easier to find stuff especially IF Members tag their threads LOL

Spend lots of your own time and tag them yourself. :) LOL.

KTBleeding 03-22-2008 02:28 PM

Seriously, if you start searching sites with google like mentioned above (site:vbulletin.org "bb") you will never ever use vb.orgs search again.

Google actually returns results that are related to what you're looking for.
