Email Problems with Yahoo!

Hi all,

Anyone who registers at my site using a Yahoo email address doesn't receive the activation email. All other email providers such as; Hotmail, Gmail ect...receive them fine. I believe this is a problem with Yahoo...so I've emailed them -- still awaiting feedback! Anyone else had this problem with Yahoo? Maybe I need to be put on their whitelist?

Regards Jason :)

the guy have to check his Spam Box, because yahoo usually filter admin emails to the trash...

Jase2 03-15-2008 04:05 PM

No, it's happening to every user. Some of the experienced ones as well, so I don't think it's going to the spam/bulk folder. Thanks for your response though.

Regards Jason :)

I know that when I use my yahoo addy on vb sites, I get the activation emails in my Spam Folder. I don't think yahoo is going to do anything about it. I've seen threads before explaining why it goes to the Spam Folder, but I forget the reasoning.

Boofo 03-15-2008 04:33 PM

Finally! I have been having the same problem and didn't know exactly what it was. Thank you for clearing that up. ;)

Is there a way we can tell new registrations that so they can expect that to happen?

snakes1100 03-15-2008 04:39 PM

If you have access to your server email logs, you need to get the error code that yahoo is using to reject your email, if no one is getting them that uses yahoo as an email address on your forums, once you get the 3 digit code, you can rectify the issue and then inform yahoo, then get your site domain whitelisted.

You totally lost me there. I have never dealt with that. Where do I get the logs as I am on a shared server? And how do I go about informing yahoo?

Well, the (default) subject line is:
Action Required to Activate Membership for YourForumName Forums

So, you could ask your users to filter subjects with YourForumName to their Inbox (I think that will make sure PM notifications go to their Inbox also).

Jase2 03-15-2008 05:34 PM

Yes, I believe I need to try and get Yahoo to whitelist my site.

Maybe I'll code in the registration form and inform all Yahoo email account users with a little "Please note".

In the meantime, I have contacted Yahoo.

Regards Jason :)

When you code that in let me know where to add it will you please? And when Yahoo contacts you, let me know what they say.

Where would I do that at, Lynne?

Jase2 03-15-2008 05:39 PM

Yes, will do Boofo! Actually, I'll start now ;)

Having owning a tech support site, I'm in touch with a few big companies, such as a-squared, symantec, CheckPoint ect...so, I could get them maybe see what they can do!

Regards Jason :)

Thanks for that!

Got any links to programs that we can use for bounce emails?

Regards Jason :)

You would have to ask your *users* to make the filter in their own yahoo mailbox (I don't think filter is the correct word, I think that is a gmail word, but yahoo has a similar function).

I'd be interested if Jason gets a response from yahoo. I know this has been an issue for a long time and not just from vbulletin forums but other forums and software that send out activation emails also.

The only two hacks that I know of that help with bounced email is ezbounce:
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=138884
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=162642

But there is a dire need for software that will protect large sites from getting banned at yahoo, hotmail, etc.

Boofo 03-15-2008 06:01 PM

But where could I add that so they see it when they register?

Jason, let me know what you come up with. That article was good but very confusing to me. I am e-mail challenged, I guess, and there is no cure. :(

snakes1100 03-15-2008 06:10 PM

First you need to find out why yahoo is actually rejecting the emails, that can be found in your server logs, there can be numerous reasons why they are rejecting it, anything from an incorrect PTR to a keyword.

@bofoo, if your on a shared server, ask the host to check the logs for you and find out what the 3 digit rejection code is for yahoo and your domain, once you have that 3 digit number, it will be easier to identify why they are rejecting it or possibly filtering it.

Once you rectify the issue, you can then request yahoo to whitelist your domain to prevent it in the future.

Boofo 03-15-2008 06:28 PM

I will see if I can get the info and let you know, if that's ok. ;)

Jase2 03-15-2008 06:45 PM

I've provided some logs to Yahoo, just need wait for a reply.

In the meantime, I'm going to add a little note in the registration form, informing users of the current problem.

Regards Jason :)

snakes1100 03-15-2008 07:43 PM

Post one of the failures in the log

Jase2 03-15-2008 09:36 PM

Boofo, if you want to add some information to your registration form, like mine HERE -- then follow my instructions below:

Open registration templates --> Register

Find:

Code:

$vbphrase[confirm_password]:<br />
      <input type="password" class="bginput" name="passwordconfirm" size="25" maxlength="50" value="$passwordconfirm" />
    </td>
    </tr>
    </table>
  </fieldset>

After, add:

Code:

<fieldset class="fieldset">
<legend>Important Information</legend>  For some reason, Yahoo & AOL are blocking emails from techsupportteam.org  <B>In the meantime, try to use a different email provider until we can fix the current problem. If you cannot use another email provider, then just post in our <a href="http://www.techsupportteam.org/forum/registration-trouble/">Registration Trouble</a> forum once you have completed this form.</B> </fieldset>

Modify it too suit your needs ;)

That will put it in a nice little box. ;)

Regards Jason :)

Been in contact with my host, here's what they had to say.

Quote:

Hello,

We are sorry for this inconvenience.

We have done numerous tests on this issue with many of our servers and we found that this is an intermittent issue that we cannot prevent. The email being sent from our servers is being sent correctly and Yahoo is deferring them at random, with no warning or notification.

We have no control over yahoos incoming smtp server's capabilities or policies.

Yahoo is deciding to defer messages coming from not only our shared servers, but any shared server hosting multiple domains.

We urge you to contact yahoo on this issue as they may provide you with additional support and information on the issue, although this is unlikely.

Please do not re-send your email as this will result in more of a delay and will result in more connections to Yahoos servers and will result in the deferred error messages.

In addition, ensure that any mailing list you have is updated to ensure there are no yahoo users who do not want your email. this will help reduce unwanted smtp connections on yahoos end.

As well, if you have forwarders in place pointing to Yahoo addresses, please remove them as they are forwarding spam to yahoo, cauasing more unwanted connections.

The following links might be helpful in getting answers to the questions you have and explinations on the issue from a wide range of users with different isps and webhosts:

http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mai.../abuse-60.html

http://ca.answers.yahoo.com/question...4160658AAAh0QY

As well, I googled 'Yahoo temporarily deferred' and found a wealth of information relating to the topic. You may wish to do this as there may be more information out there that you wish to see.

Note that you may want to consider an upgrade to a dedicated server plan or the virtual private server plan, on which your email service would not be affected by any other user, only email coming from your domains would be coming from your server.

The plans can be reviewed at:
http://www.lunarpages.com/dedicated-hosting/
and
http://www.lunarpages.com/virtual-private-server/

I understand this isnt a solution or correction to the issue, but I can only offer suggestions advice and information as Yahoo chooses to defer these messeages from shared servers at random.

We appreciate your understanding of the matter.

If you have any more questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the Lunarpages Help Desk again.
Seems rather OTT to me, Yahoo! are just a joke. My host is trying to get me upgrade to a VPS or dedicated server -- how nice!

Regards Jason :)

Jason,
I just wanted to say THANXX for finally solving this mystery. We have a lot of Yahoo users who never make it out of Confirming Status and I've always wondered exactly as to why.
:(

After tripping across your post while looking for a MOD related to Yahoo User Registrations, at least I now have a clue as to what's been going on. :)

I also revised our registration template in a similar manner to forewarn such users that they need to use a Non-AOL/YAHOO email address, or they will probably never receive an Activation Email required to complete the process. :mad:

GREAT IDEA! :up:
