Vista?

I'm currently pondering moving to Vista, I've been able to acquire a copy from my grandfather who is downgrading to XP because he doesn't like the way Vista works. I'm willing to make the leap though. I'm just curious what you all would think my performance would be like.

cpu: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3800+ at 2411MHz
gfx: ATI Technologies Inc. ATI Radeon Graphics Processor (0x5B63) 256MB
ram: 1027/3070.5MB (33.44%) [|||-------]

Boofo 03-01-2008 04:25 PM

You shouldn't have any problem at all with that setup, although I would follow your Grandfather's path. Vista is just pretty graphics and bloatware.

Dan 03-01-2008 04:30 PM

Well he does use programs that where coded and never upgraded past windows 3.11 so that might be a reason Vista isn't friendly to him =p

Boofo 03-01-2008 04:39 PM

Trust me, when you want to add new programs to Vista, it won't be friendly to you, either. I figure if Microsoft can extend the support deadline for XP, then that should tell you something about the faith they have in their new baby.

Dan 03-01-2008 04:45 PM

Sadly Bob, I'm not looking for reasons not to upgrade, I'm looking to see if the box should run it fairly well without issues =p I don't use many old programs that I would think would have issues.

chrisdaman77 03-01-2008 05:07 PM

Personally I don't see any issues with Vista. As far as your specs go you should be fine. I use Vista Business and use 2 gig memory and it flies. I was only at 1 but had to bump it up as Vista does require a lot of memory.

Then, yes, you should do fine. But as chrisdaman77 pointed out, more memory would make things better.

iogames 03-01-2008 06:32 PM

Don't do it! I have downgraded like 20 computers for guys curious like you and it's a headache... :P

Boofo 03-01-2008 06:35 PM

I agree, but I got chewed out for it. :(

chrisdaman77 03-01-2008 06:46 PM

Just out of curiosity what did you all find to be your problem? I have had bot Vista Premium and Business and any program I want to use works well for me. The only thing I found so far that didn't work was my printer...but it is an older printer.

Boofo 03-01-2008 06:48 PM

It is just bloated with a lot of useless crap that slows things down. Think how fast XP would run on your computer if you think Vista runs good. When the PC Mag editors say they'll stay with XP, it makes you sit up and take notice. ;)

iogames 03-01-2008 06:50 PM

Well... Nexialys is the good one on technical explanations, but he got a 'Mac' so on this just trust us ;)

chrisdaman77 03-01-2008 06:52 PM

I guess everyone has a different experience with both OS's. Personally I hated XP. I miss when I had ME. That was an awesome OS.

Boofo 03-01-2008 06:52 PM

Fear is the path to the dark side... fear leads to anger... anger leads to hate... hate leads to suffering... suffering leads to the Macintosh.

which explains Nex's outlook on life.

You need help! ME? Even Microsoft hid in the corner on that one. ;)

Like i say everyone had their own preference. Although when i had ME it was just for basic browsing. There was no technical stuff going on with that computer.

I agree with you; maybe we are in a transition period and old ppl would find hard to adapt to new ways... But explain to me, why in H*ll they moved: Windows Key+U+U!?!?! No reason!

Boofo 03-01-2008 07:12 PM

Old people? Was that a dig?

Old editors from the NYTimes, the New Yorker, those gray beard guys on PC magazine... you can't beat 'The Curve of Life'

chrisdaman77 03-01-2008 07:22 PM

I will agree that Vista has needless stuff but for some it is useful. I am not sure if those things can be removed.

setishock 03-04-2008 04:10 PM

If you take the time to go through Vista and set it up you'll find it runs exceptionally well. Going through and uninstalling what you don't plan to use plus editing the reg will have a significant impact on how well it operates. BlackViper has been a guru of sorts for years and has just recently come back from a vacation of sorts to reopen his site. Lots of real useful info.

Don't do it if you don't have to. Wait as long as possible.

Real issues with wireless connectivity.

Romeos Tune 03-04-2008 10:52 PM

I've never had any wireless problems or program problems with Vista. And it runs faster than XP. I've got tons of programs on here too. Getting ready to get a new box for work and it will have Vista as well.

Boofo 03-04-2008 11:16 PM

<rant>It runs faster than XP? Who are you trying to kid with that statement? ;)

And if Vista is so good, why is Microsoft dropping the price on it? Because 99% of sales have been with the PC resellers. Microsoft can't sell it to the general public. They don't want it.</rant>

;)

Romeos Tune 03-05-2008 12:44 AM

lol Kidding? Me kid? Ok, well I might.... But nah, I'm still a Vista fan...... :D

Boofo 03-05-2008 01:15 AM

hehe Good comeback. ;)

Loanmanken 03-05-2008 01:50 AM

I love vista and it is very fast on my laptop...granted I do not have a bunch of programs installed other the the default ones and, photoshop cs, firefox, putty, miofactory, norton anti-virus, and a scientific calculator that I have not used since my general chemistry days...

If you are looking for a reason to upgrade then you will find that there are not all that many reasons to do so, I would take Boofo's avice on this issue. Or you could listen to nex and get a mac...I bet vista would not slow a mac down...

setishock 03-05-2008 05:18 AM

Runs fine on my laptop too. Basic version and it's loaded for bear. HP dv6205us
It's just a matter of wanting to learn the in's and out's of a new os. Trim off the fat and it runs fine. Only problems I really have are from the loose nut between the chair and the keyboard. (For those of you that don't catch that joke, it means self inflected issues coming from blatant acts of ignorance.:o)
As for the price, yeah it's a little steep. I gave $230.00US for home premium at the soon to be defunct CompUSA.

Rick Sample 03-09-2008 01:32 PM

Make the move to Vista! I was concerned at first when I ordered my new PC towards the end of last year. However, I'm glad chose vista instead of XP. To me Vista is more polished and professional than the blue/green look of XP. I also love the sidebar with the hundreds of gadgets you can put in it.

My PC Specs
2.40 Ghz Intel Quad Core
2 Gigs Ram

A lot of people who have problems with Vista are running the minimum requirements that Microsoft suggests. There PC just can't handle the OS.

PennylessZ28 03-09-2008 06:36 PM

I remember all the people who downgraded to Windows 98. Vista is hands down better than XP.

Boofo 03-09-2008 07:09 PM

Vista is pretty, that doesn't malke it better by a long shot. In order to run Vista, you have to shell out even more money to upgrade enough to run it decently. I am running an old P4 2.8 GHZ with 2 GB memory and XP runs great. Vista would be as slow as a hog on this.

DarkSorrowz 03-10-2008 06:59 PM

Well personally, I switched from Vista back to XP. I find Vista doesn't accept most programs I use, and its also a memory eater.

Zachery 03-10-2008 07:04 PM

Vista is made for new hardware, theres little to no reason to try running it on old hardware.

Correct !
I am happy Vista Ultimate, but you do need a new system.
I just got a new box and there are no problems with any programs I have installed so far.

2.4 GHz x4 Quad Core
System Memory 2045 MB
Video Adapter GeForce 8800 GTS

You can shut down all the fluff for a standard default install and tune in the workstation.

- The only thing I changed was my e-mail program. Outlook Express is no longer in Vista, so now I am using Windows Live Mail.

R1lover 03-16-2008 03:34 PM

Vista is great "if" it's setup properly and you can work out any bugs you may have.... I have been using it for about a year now and love it.

This is the pinnicel of the cycle of operating system upgrades. "Oh every new version is sooo hated and its nothing but bloat and "stuff"". This is a load and its nothing more then people being afraid of change. I remember when XP came out it was bashed just like Vista. Then when SP-2 for XP came out with its firewall that BROKE many programs and antivirus programs that everyone cryied so much.

I have been running Vista Ultimate RTM for just over 16 months without a single crash or program issue. Vista is designed differently then XP and you just cant go and click "Install" on a program as you need to install software as "Administrator". Thats not difficult but people dont take the time to read I guess!

Vista is sooo much better then XP ever was "hands down" :D
