Small/Middle Sized Forums

Something I always wanted to find out. We all know Big Boards are from 500 000 posts plus. However what size bracket would Small Forums and Middle Sized Forums be in? Any ideas people?

nexialys 02-03-2008 01:37 AM

actually you can evaluate by yourself that a they are below the big boards level, why ask ?!

Freesteyelz 02-03-2008 02:05 AM

Nice for making people feel *that* much smaller, nexialys.

To some big boards start in the million+. For me I think it depends on the genre of your board. With my clan site I had up to 300,000+ posts and that was big for a gaming clan. It's been pruned to 150,000+ and that's still big.

If it were another genre even at 300,000+ would be small to medium sized.

I'm only at 34 000 posts but my gerne is writing which is one of the hardest type of forums to promote and run. So its a good number I believe.

34,000 is a very good number. Also consider the member to post ratio when you look at the overall picture. For me the larger the ratio the better. :)

I'm assuming it depends on what the niche is. For a very general category, being a big forum would probably be at least big board level, while being a medium sized forum would also be a mildly tough requirement. I'd assume the sizes of the boards would be bigger if the niche is say, Gaming, Webmaster or General Discussion.

The requirement however might be smaller if there is a very specific subject covered though.

That doesn't really then say what the difference between a medium and small site is.

Thanks. It's been hard to reach that and hoping for more success this year. Writing is a hard task because it requires members to work. While with gaming or music, the content is created by others.

I consider
500 000+ Huge

1 000 - 10 000 Medium

1 000- and under small

according to http://www.littleforums.com 10 000 and under is small but i disagree. I emailed my forum to him but its been one week and no reply

cheat-master30 02-04-2008 05:40 AM

The idea of it being less than 10 000 members being small is a little ridiculous considering a few hundred forums on big boards.com have that size member base.

That's true. I only have 370 members but we have done very well.

I run four vBulletin boards. One gets about a dozen posts a week, another maybe a hundred, a third perhaps a thousand (mostly people being silly), and the last about four thousand posts a week. The question for me is not size, but whether or not I get some value out of running them.

I have a small forum, 2000 members w/ about 250,000 posts. I totally agree that if it's under 10,000 then it's consider a small forum. But that's just me.

My site is just over a year old and has these stats;

Threads: 5,575, Posts: 112,896, Members: 1,604

I'd assume thats quite small in comparision to others.

Good ratio for members and posts though

DieselMinded 03-14-2008 11:24 PM

Id Say 250,000 Is the Semi-Big Board Status

Threads: 9,738

And the Site Turned 1 Yesterday

I would consider 1 to be very small
but 2 to be semi-small
whilst 3 relatively small
4 not so small
5 getting there (but still on a small scale).
6 to be (nearly there but your little bigger than small but smaller than medium sized)
7 smaller than medium size but bigger than small (but your still small)
8 Hey I'm still small but I'm a happy small
9 small-ish
10 to be gigantic (big-board status).

Congrats! For both of your sites just making a year those are very nice stats. I would love those numbers after 1 year. :)

Thanks !!
