Multiple Domains
<font color="darkgreen">I was wondering if you could direct a domain name to a specific subforum without hiding any of the other forums? I'm sure it can be done but I want to know if its within the license to do so.
Then the issue of logins will be a problem as it will appear that you are not logged in from one domain but are in the other. This would all be using the same database, on same server, and showing all forums. Thanks</font> |
go to your domain and put a redirect on it so it redirects to the link you want it to
|
I think more so he is wondering if it is legal :)
|
@MiahBeSmokin420, Maybe if you read the question completely you would understand that redirecting is NOT the question
The licensing is the question and the secondary one, which depends on the answer, is handling some kind of common domain login or sharing of cookies between the two. |
You should post your licensing question at vbulletin.com.
As far as the secondary question goes, im sure its possible, but i dont believe anything like that is released here. |
<font color="darkgreen">Ok, will do but lets say its within the terms of the license.
How can I handle dual domains? Some kind of autologin at the other site behind the scenes?</font> |
try adding the domain to the POST Referer white list
|
<font color="darkgreen">Ok I found the whitelist so what you are saying is to modify the login code to also post the login to the secondary domain?
I figured it would be done with a .htaccess redirect and sharing of cookies but is this whitelist better?</font> |
Jake Bunce of vBulletin addressed redirecting sites to one origin and using a central forum. If I get what you want to do then you're adhering to vBulletin's licensing policy. :)
|
Yes, I am doing that with some of my business sites (non-vBulletin) using .htaccess rewrites but if its within the license I would really prefer to use two domain names for a single site/database.
Thanks for the replies guys. Vbulletin.com still hasnt even replied to my thread. :D |
Although I'm fairly certain I suggest that you wait for vB's official word. You may also consider using their Support Ticket if they don't get back to you within 24 hours.
For myself, I wanted to use 1 database for multiple domains. I'll need separate vB licenses since the only common denominator will be the user logins. It has been done before but 1) It's not officially supported by vB and 2) I don't know exactly how to do it...Then again, I didn't look deeply into it (yet). :) |
<font color="darkgreen">Well I have probably about 35% of the code memorized as I have been writting a large product for vB but I havent got into this area yet.
I had found something before on this site for what appeared to be sharing of cookies between the two domains to persist common logins. Still searching again for it. I just want it so that all users will remain logged in to either domain. I really think it should be ok as its nothing more then different domain names for the same database and same forums.</font> |

Yup, that's the key. What you want to do is fine () with 1 vB license but for myself, since there will be multiple vB installs for every instance I'll need a separate license for them. |
I will call vB.com tomorrow as by the time they get around to my ticket it will be morning and the phone lines will beopen.
I mean what does everyone do if they have ... mysite.com and also mysite.net and want to retain the domain extensions and not use redirects etc? I would think that since everything is using the same install, server, database etc it would be ok but I will verify and post tomorrow with their official answer. Thanks for confirming my assumptions. I found the addon I mentioned earlier but it wont work for me with my multiple domain/same site logon issue. . https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=98233 http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showt...124#post971124 |

Yup...That's what Jake did. :) Much appreciation for the links. I'll look more in depth of the latter...That's basically what I want to do. |

Cool, seems like its a go. Thanks everyone for your input so far but how can I implement the whitelist? The help topic didnt really say too much. |
I didn't know there was a Whitelist. :)
