Private Message spam

I had a spammer sign up on my roleplaying forum and start pm-spamming for her buddist-website.

Any ideas how to avoid this in the future? Is there any way to limit PMs for people who have just signed up?

SGL.

I had a spammer do this too.. same spammer.. buddist website. I reported them to all the free sites but only one of the free sites removed them.. I contacted the server hosts that hosts the ip. They gave me that not our ip crap... when whois says it is.

The spammer sent out 1800 pms. I have my pms set to max 20 at a time. They are obviously using software to auto send them.. I doubt anyone would send 20 out at a time.. and do it in a mater of hours. Possibly minutes. I still have no clue how they did it.

there is some hacks that give permission to PM only after X posts... i suppose there is some others.

I could do it in less than 30 seconds... the crawler make a list of the usernames of your site by visiting your Memberlist... then the autoscript push the pms in the system... at first a test to see how many and in what delay, and then automate the process to push them without anyother help.

btw, having a limit for the new members is good, it force the spammers to chat on the forum... usually they are bored after 10 posts...

I've been searching the forum for this hack would you mind posting the link to it?

You do not need a hack to do this.

Copy the default "Registered Users" usergroup into another group (say "Fully Registered").

Now set the "Maximum Recipients to Send PMs at a time" permission on the Registered Users group to zero to disable sending PMs.

Add a promotion to upgrade users from Registered to Fully Registered at X number of posts.

You may also want to rename "Registered" to "Newly Registered" or so.

I got hit with the same thing. Unfortunately the person was a member for days before I realized that there was spam going out. The message just said "Hi Im new here" and the buddist message was made to look to be in a signature.

Unfortunately I didnt even know until the PM came to me.

Have you tried this mod? https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthrea...rivate+message
