The Can of Soup That Ruined My Life

Yes, believe it or not, a can of soup can actually ruin one's life.

Being sick and all, I decided to cook some soup. Being a programmer and not a chef, I put the can of soup onto the stove (as per the directions) and turned that sucker up. Now, I'm not a complete idiot... I've cooked it like that before and it worked out OK. But somehow, lady luck wasn't on my side tonight.

I go back to my PC to kill a few minutes while I wait, and I hear a loud explosion.

I immediately panic, well knowing what had just happened. My roommate had a blank look in his face, wondering what the hell just happened. I rush to the kitchen to see the entire room covered in Campbell's chunky soup. When I say the whole room, I mean it - the ceiling, walls, doors, lights, appliances. It was completely covered with chunks of meat, veggies and sauce.

I mean, it's pretty damn funny... one of those worst case scenarios that you don't even think about. I pretty much peed myself, and begged for some help with the cleanup since we are both dead if it's not cleaned before it starts to stain.

Everything went pretty well except for the ceiling, which is white with that stacco? texture stuff on it. We had to rub it off in order to clean it, so we have a very uneven ceiling with patches of wood showing. We have about 15 minutes before my other roommate comes home, who is the fussy girl who likes things clean.

At some point in our cleaning process, one of the kitchen lights went out, so at this point my roommate starts taking it apart to look at it. It's one of those 4ft pole lights with the rectangular plastic cover. As we are trying to put it back in and get it working, it drops and shatters into a million pieces. Dust and broken glass is now covering our 3 hours of scrubbing.

Anyway, by some miracle she is late, and 4 hours later we managed to clean everything up, with the exception of the broken ("burned out") light and the patchy ceiling which we'll have to re-paint eventually.

What a night :(

All from one pesky can of soup, and an incompetent cook. I'm never cooking again.

Dismounted 11-29-2007 04:26 AM

TBH, that's not cooking :p, merely "re-heating". :D So you're an incompetent "re-heater" xD.

Adrian Schneider 11-29-2007 04:27 AM

Thanks... means a lot. :p

I cook some stuff, like spaghetti, omelettes, quesadillas... but anything that requires more effort than ordering is cooking to me.

pyro.699 11-29-2007 04:28 AM

Aj, i swear man, you have completely made my night xD i was depressed up until you told me that! although it shouldn't be something to laugh at, it was pretty entertaining, thanks for the laugh man!

What were those directions? Heat contents and serve? :D

Adrian Schneider 11-29-2007 04:41 AM

"Heat on stove and serve", or along those lines.

Pics on the way! Maybe a video, too.

Freesteyelz 11-29-2007 04:50 AM

Who is "she"? Also, I'm not a physics person but heat causes pressure and if there isn't an outlet for that pressure...

O wait, you already found that out. :D I feel for you and your roommate but I thank you at the same time for making me laugh.

iogames 11-29-2007 07:33 AM

Note to myself: 'Never re-heat cans'

Thank God u weren't the guy in South Korea

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- An exploding mobile phone battery apparently killed a South Korean man in the first such known case in this gadget-obsessed country, police say.

The man, identified only by his family name Suh, was found dead at his workplace in a quarry Wednesday morning and his mobile phone battery was melted in his shirt pocket, a police official in Cheongwon, 135 kilometers (85 miles) south of Seoul, told The Associated Press.

"We presume that the cell phone battery exploded," the police official said on condition of anonymity.

The official said the phone was made by South Korea's LG Electronics, the world's fifth-biggest handset maker.

LG Electronics confirmed its product was involved in the accident but said such a battery explosion and death was virtually impossible.

... you didn't take your avatar from my picture did you?!?!

how insensitive :(

iogames, if I had been near the can at the time, the lid could have slit my throat when it it exploded... very scary!

deezelpope 11-29-2007 08:13 AM

OMG, I haven't laughed this hard in a LONG time!:D

Um, it's all fine and dandy if you wanna heat a can of soup, on the stove, IN the can, BUT you've gotta OPEN the can first. Or, like normal folks, use a small saucepan. They look like this:

https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/external/2007/11/8.jpg

Would it be insensitive of me to ask if I can nominate you for a Darwin Award?:p Or suggest you submit this on the site? http://www.darwinawards.com/

OH, and those textured ceilings really DO suck BIG time!! I used to have to clean them after fires when I was working as a Disaster Restoration Technician.

PMSL..... how funny :D :D :D

It could have been worse, you could have made it into the Darwin Awards :D

Brad 11-29-2007 10:07 AM

Let me make sure I'm understanding this: You placed a can of soup on the eye of the stove without opening it and didn't expect the result you got? :o

Didn't your parents ever teach you how to cook? :D C'mon man I was cooking eggs by the age of 6! :D Here I was thinking my buddy (who doesn't understand what pre-heating the oven means) was a poor cook...and a long you come with a story like this. :D

Follow your own advice...stay out of the kitchen. ;)

This makes me want to set-up my "Brad's guide to cooking for lazy guys and stoners" site even more.

sabret00the 11-29-2007 10:18 AM

Wahahahahahhahahahhahahaha. Never in my life have i EVER thought of putting a can onto a stove.

Marco van Herwaarden 11-29-2007 10:23 AM

For more special effects, try putting it in your MicroWave next time. :D :D

deezelpope 11-29-2007 10:30 AM

 Marco! :erm: Not very good advice to give to someone who would cook soup IN the can. ;):p

now, that's a full days work!!
it's always great to see another side of our members.

the pictures are great; especially, the one where the can is on the stove :D

thanks for sharing

cheesegrits 11-29-2007 01:29 PM

I see you did actually open the can first, so it could have been worse! A friend of mine at college once did almost the same thing with a can of tomato soup, only he didn't open the can first. The resulting explosion actually propelled the can through a wall, and coated every surface in the kitchen with a fine mist of red goop. Looked like a particularly gruesome crime scene.

If you were in the U.S., I'm sure you'd have lawyers offering to sue Cambells for inadequate cooking instructions!

Adrian Schneider 11-29-2007 06:55 PM

Hugh, the can opened itself. I'm glad it wasn't tomato soup... that would have stained all the walls !

Guest190829 11-29-2007 07:32 PM

LOL - that is why I just stick to ramen noodles. All this can stuff is too dangerous. :p

iogames 11-29-2007 08:23 PM

LOL... for some reason this is more funny that the guy that intended to pay goods online by inserting his credit card on the floppy drive :D
[No is not a myth; I know him]

BrandiDup 11-29-2007 08:59 PM

Oh. My. Gosh. Bwahahahahaha. That is the funniest thing I have seen or heard in a looooong time. Thank you for making me smile (and laugh til my tummy hurts :D )

Ah, so it was one of those peel away lids, rather than a can-opener lid? And you didn't remove the lid?

I *knew* it. Genius with PHP, complete bozo when it comes to real life, LOL!

You should know me better than that by now! It was just a common or garden insult. PHP geniuses (genii?) are common as muck these days. :D

Not of your caliber of course, he says, backpedaling furiously.

May I recommend for your sake you never become Marco's roommate :D

And I won't accept any offers to become yours while we're at that subject :p I don't feel safe with someone who follows instructions a little too literally :D lol

Pick me! Pick me! I want fireworks :D.

Marco van Herwaarden 11-30-2007 05:47 AM

I am not holding you back Dismounted, feel free to try (but don't blame me).

Brad 11-30-2007 08:07 AM

I ended up eating some of this soup tonight and had to explain this thread to my friends when I busted out laughing while opening the can. ;) I ended up showing them the pictures after I ate! ;)

He's right about the instructions btw! :D

smacklan 11-30-2007 11:11 AM

I hope you understand the principles of operating a motor vehicle better than cooking a can of soup ;) :p

Wayne Luke 11-30-2007 01:45 PM

Now, I know why my mother insisted that I learn how to cook while growing up.

Roms 11-30-2007 02:13 PM

Thanks for sharing! LOL

Now I know what not to do with soup. :D

ROFL, there are tears rolling down my cheeks as I read this. :D

This is a wind up right ? You didn't seriously do this - no one is that daft, are they :erm:

Adrian Schneider 12-01-2007 10:52 PM

I wish! There is still some cleaning to do under the hood of the stove. :( and then the re-painting, new light...

I'm sick... can't think straight! That's my excuse, anyway.
