I haven't been on Windows in a while, but can't you just right click -> Send To -> Zip ?

Andrew Green 11-09-2007 08:10 PM

I'm pretty sure windows does .zip handling on its own, if not there are other zip programs then winzip.

Give http://www.7-zip.org/ a try.

When you create an archive in WinRAR, you can choose to create it as a ZIP file as well. Just run the program, select your files and click "add". On the Create Archive screen, you simply choose ZIP as your archive format.

Well I'll be a monkey's uncle

Thanks Wayne  I've been using winzip for years, and just recently started using winrar as my only compressing tool. I've never looked at the options, just always right clicked and saved as a .rar.

Yes Danny, that works as well :)

Look, I learned two things today...lol

thanks guys

Is there a reason why rar isn't in the attachments tho ? I like the little books..lol

Zachariah 11-09-2007 09:23 PM

:) well WinRAR is not a standard. (yet mahahaha)
- I have used it since there was only a command line version.

Nothing supports it natively that I know of.
I know Windows XP + has native "zip" support.

Paul M 11-09-2007 09:46 PM

Zip is a standard that works for everyone, so we prefer to stick to that.

You might want to check out; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7zip

Recently switched over to it...haven't looked back since. ;)

Link14716 11-10-2007 05:32 AM

Yeah, I prefer .rar to .zip, but obviously one is supported a lot more than the other. :)

Adrian Schneider 11-10-2007 05:34 AM

Can't most RAR apps open ZIP files also?

Mine can.

Yeah, I know WinRAR can -- but I don't think it works the other way around like with WinZIP.

Aye, if I'd like to see another format permitted here it would be .7z. But there seems little point in anything other than .zip, you'd almost certainly have to upload multiple formats to cater for the zip crowd still and it just would end up taking more of the forum's HD with little benefit.

Still, I second using the 7zip programme if anyone hasn't done already. Slightly rough around the edges UI aside, you'll likely need nothing else.

Yes, and ZIP is supported which means adding RAR probably isn't the best of ideas, at least as far as distributing hacks goes.

But I personally do use WinRAR for archiving.

I agree. The very minimal gains in compression ratio achieved in archiving a modification as a RAR don't merit allowing them IMO.

Dismounted 11-11-2007 03:46 AM

Most hacks are less than 1 MB anyway, so the compression would be little.

Brad 11-11-2007 04:46 AM

IMHO if another file type was allowed it should be tar.gz. Eh just bored and wanted to throw that in there. ;)

MRGTB 11-15-2007 12:16 AM

WinRAR can extract Zip files and create them also, but WinRAR gives better compression in most cases when using RAR compression.

Winzip, never used that for over 7 years now WinRAR is by far better and can extract not only both types and more like Tar etc. But lets you do things like create multispan archives, self extracting archives, password protected archives and much much more.

winrar website is pretty bad though, if this is it

www.rarlab.com

I was going to buy it, but had second thoughts.

Dan 11-20-2007 09:54 PM

You don't have to buy it though... just install it and it works forever just brings up a nag screen every so often.

Dream 11-20-2007 10:23 PM

Too late :) I like supporting good software.

(and cheap software hehe)

Kirk Y 11-21-2007 01:03 AM

Don't judge a book by its cover. ;)

MRGTB 11-21-2007 08:30 PM

The site may look basic, but everybody in the know uses Winrar. It's simply the best!

Personally I like and get better compression ratios with 7 zip.

Dream 11-22-2007 04:41 PM

I only wish winrar used different icons for zip files, similar to the winzip ones. Looks like everything is a rar file using the same icon.

And that is why I no longer use explorer to manage my files you might want to look into Total Commander. I highly recommend looking at it, well worth every penny even know it just shows a nag screen when you don't register it.

Dean C 11-23-2007 05:25 AM

Once you get used to it, totalcommander is pretty good, especially the keyboard shortcuts :) Anyways this topic has served its purpose by now, don't you think?

Paul M 11-23-2007 12:07 PM

Yes, I think this has been well covered now, closed.
