Source has reset the connection
I am repeatedly getting this error lately when trying to download styles (add-ons seem to be okay, preumably because of their smaller file size).
I'm on dial-up, which is bad enough. Now I can't get the download to complete. Suggestions? |
Might be the connection times out with your connection speed. Does this mainly happen with large attachments?
Is there an attachment you can link to that gives the error all the time? |

This is the latest. I have tried it several times. The download is slow to start, gets to maybe 150-250 kb and gives me the "can't download the file - connection was reset" error:

I like to use GetRight but that doesn't work for scripted downloads.
But the thing is I used to be able to download larger files from vb.org until about a week or teo ago, and I can still download similar sized files from other sites. The only place I'm having a problem is here at vb.org. |

I have spoken with the person who maintain our server today, and it is not very likely that the configuration of our servers is causing this.
Most likely your connection is not stable enough for the time needed to download the attachment. |
Possibly. On the other hand, why is it
1. that I had no difficulty with downloads from vb.org until approx. 7-10 days ago, and now I have the problem consistently with larger files? 2. that I have no difficulty downloading from other sites, including other scripted sites? In fact, I was able to locate one of the files on another site, also scripted, and downloaded it without incident. Could it be that vb.org has changed its timeout recently and is simply timing out too quickly? |
What timeout exactly ?
No forum settings have changed (nor can i think of any that would have an effect). We do not control server settings, but I don't think any of those have been changed by Jelsoft. |

You may be seeing it for the first time and yes something has probably changed to cause that but the problem has always existed. I should know considering how bad my connection is (see attachment ;)).
You may be able to download these "large" attachments elsewhere even if they are serving the file with a script. However their server configurations are probably allowing scripts to run longer...or allowing connections to stay active longer. Or you could have a faster connection to that server...who knows. Try this; go to a high traffic site (say dl.qj.net) and download a large file (in the 20mb+ range). Witness your connection time out before your very eyes! :) Like I said the solution for lowband users at this site and elsewhere is to use a browser that supports resume. Just this morning I managed to pull down vBdurpal5.3.0.zip in just 7 attempts. ;) Yes I know it sucks having to babysit downloads...the internet is no longer designed with us in mind. |
Thanks, Brad. I do have Firefox installed. I hate it with a passion but I could use it for downloads. :o
Or maybe Opera has this option too.... --------------- Added [DATE]1194889911[/DATE] at [TIME]1194889911[/TIME] --------------- The good news for people that find Firefox slow and clunky is that Opera 9.2x has a transfer manager that allows you to resume interrupted scripted downloads. I'm using it now to download a file from here and have already resumed it once. |
AS far as I am aware, Internet Explorer does resumes automatically as well. At least when I lost connection while downloading a 10 Gigabyte file from my brother, it resumes correctly 6 GBs in when my router got accidently unplugged.

There have no settings been changed recently on our servers, so if it started a few weeks ago then there has most likely changed something on your end.
