Going to kill my host...

So, it has been one thing after another today. I wake up and my site will not connect whatsoever. Just a blank screen. So, I send them a message and then about an hour later I start receiving these errors in my mailbox:

Database error in vBulletin :

Code:

mysql_connect() [<a href='function.mysql-connect'>function.mysql-connect</a>]: User XXXXX_XXXX has already more than 'max_user_connections' active connections
/home/keyhuntc/public_html/forum/includes/class_core.php on line 274

MySQL Error  :

Date        : Thursday, October 25th 2007 @ 01:33:07 PM
Script      : http://www.keyhunt.com/
Referrer    :
IP Address  : XXX.XXX.XX.xx
Username    :
Classname    : vb_database

So, I post that iin the ticket as well. Now, they say that basically I am using up too many resources blah blah. I don't understand a word they are saying. I know I don't have persistent connections on and I know that I cannot even access my cpanel to back up everything or to at least try to fix something. Basically what they tell me is to review my policy or something. What am I supposed to do here? Troubleshoot without being able to even get into my database? The site is lagging so bad I can't even get in cpanel and my actual site still hasn't been up for HOURS. Not only that it takes them 2 hours to reply to a ticket that I paid $1.00 for high priority. I just don't understand it....can someone enlighten me?

Desperate and ready to kill someone,

Oh and could this be a "DDos attack" - as here in the past few weeks I haven't exactly made new friends with my site...and have had threats.

Dream 10-25-2007 04:49 PM

get www.theplanet.com

bigcurt 10-25-2007 04:53 PM

rofl - and the funny thing is my host is actually in the process of changing to theplanet.com...

my host is www.site5.com by the way. They used to be great, and have gotten absolutely terrible lately.

ChrisLM2001 10-25-2007 05:06 PM

There's always a risk with forums on shared accounts will peak past quotas. Just the nature of the beast. It can also be one bad script/mod/code tweak that could generate 100% CPU usage, or 10+% of the entire server memory (so true with CGI).

If a webhost has a good firewall and all, DDoS attacks would be nominal (especially if they monitor for unusual traffic, like The Planet does). You, and the the entire server, will know if your site is hit, too!

Beermonster 10-25-2007 06:17 PM

Someone that offers 750GB of space and 7.5TB of bandwidth for $7.50 is really over selling, I run a small hosting company mainly made up of people I know or have been recommenced, I have a good server not a shared hosting package and I wouldn't or couldn't offer that sort of space and bw, and if I did I would make sure I could honor it, uklike your host, what size site do they expect offering that?

bigcurt 10-26-2007 01:24 AM

They USED to be a lot better. My plan is like $15 a month for like 5gg ( or 15 ) and 50GB BW..something to that nature. However, they have really started to slack off lately ( especially in support ) and I am looking for other hosting options.

SBoards 10-26-2007 02:35 AM

we're looking for other hosting options as well, so any input is appreciated.

nevermind... there's another forum that's all about hosting solutions

lighti 10-28-2007 03:35 PM

Yes any shared hosting account offering that much for 7.50 is obviously overselling and betting on the fact that the majority of people needing web hosting will not use 7.5 TB of bw heck the majority would be lucky to break a few hundred GB a month. They surely could not honor that to more then a few users, and if they move to theplanet they will get about 2TB a month included in their hosting package... So if even 1 user max's out his plan of 7.5 TB that host will have one hell of an overage bill, that the 7.50 will not cover..

john2k 11-02-2007 08:24 AM

I've always been amazed with how much Site5 gives away with their shared plan. 750GB + 7.5TB is just plain crazy. They could never realistically support that. No way. Not for $7.50 per month.

I would stay away from them simply because they are making such unrealistic promises.

The thing is, on one side of the coin they give all this space and data transfer - but on the flip side, their TOS probably has strict limits on CPU / MySQL / email usage which would prevent anyone from being able to use the full 750/7.5 anyway.

Just plain crazy.

And if that's crazy, I don't know what to call HostGator's "Swamp" plan that offers 1000GB of space and UNLIMITED bandwidth for $12.95 monthly. Yes, unlimited bandwidth.

bigcurt 11-03-2007 06:33 PM

I joined when they weren't that bad though. Now, I am looking for a new - DECENT hosting but it is hard to get an unbiased opinion.

bigcurt 11-05-2007 12:04 AM

^^ You proved my point exactly :P. Your host seems great ( assuming it is yours because of your username ) but I am looking for UNBIASED opinions of hosting :P.

Brandon Sheley 11-05-2007 12:17 AM

$1 isn't going to get you high priority support anywhere ;)

It sounds like your on a shared plan where the host has oversold.
I strongly support www.fluidhosting.com, might be worth a look if you care about up-time. :)

and you may want to check out www.webhostingtalk.com, it's a hosting forums.

If you're asking people of their opinions then it will be biased. Independent research groups will be your better bet if you're looking for unbiased results. :)

Anyway, If the offer is big but the price is small something doesn't equate.

As I have said a million times over. The packages and prices were a lot more reasonable then they are now with Site5. For instance I pay $15 a month for 5GB hosting and like 50GB Bandwidth. That is no where near as "too good to be true" as it is now with Site5.

Also, people can give their opinions on hosting companies without strictly endorsing their company. Most of the responses I have received so far have been just that. Just because you have a hosting plan with a specific host doesn't mean your biased to that one host. Are you getting paid to advertise for them? If not, then all you are doing is giving your honest opinion and feedback on your host. THAT is what I am looking for.

Do I sense a bit of frustration, bigcurt? :D

I'll chime in and say liquidweb.com provides professional support. I personally like their (24/7) phone support and not once have been disappointed. The representatives are patient and treat their customers as individuals rather than numbers. They'll do whatever they can to keep you a happy customer. While I use their VPS #2 plan I imagine that their service will be as professional as on any other plan.

They offer 3 types of shared plans ($14.95, $19.95 and $24.95 respectively) that all seem reasonable.

I would like to second this post. I have used them for around 2 years total. I used them for their VPS1 plan, then switched to another host b/c I found one that was cheaper and I was struggling to save some money where I could. Big mistake b/c I didn't get anywhere near the quality of service and support with my new host. So, I switched back, went to their VPS2, then upgraded to a fully dedicated a few months ago. I'm very happy with liquidweb and have received nothing short of top notch support, 24 hours a day.

If you keep an eye out at www.webhostingtalk.com you can almost always find specials for their VPS and dedi servers which is how I got the great deal on mine. I highly recommend them!

I run a small board compared to some of you, but I have been using wiredhub.net for a long time, and have never had any problems at all.

There is the thing, I have had several servers and had good/bad comments about all of them. Atm I am on a clustered netfirms server. It is probably the best server I have had up to now but it still sucks ass at times. Yes I get db errors and they can take a while to get fixed. I have had a dedicated server which really sucked ass and i got cast out eventually . Running VB boards after they get past 100gb a month is not simple. Bear in mind your host might not have run many of them and if you persevere you may help others as they will know the problems after you fix them for later reference. It has took me a few months to get mine settled but now i would give netfirms 4 stars, if you had asked me a week ago I would have gave them 1. Have patience grasshopper. Rome wasn't built in a day
